Las Vegas provides several public transportation options for visitors.
One is the Las Vegas Monorail. This basic rail system provides service along the portion of Las Vegas Boulevard known as the Strip. Trains run from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. Monday-Thursday and until 3:00 a.m. Friday-Sunday. Stations are located at MGM Grand, Bally's, Flamingo, Harrah's, Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton and Sahara. Trains arrive about every five to ten minutes. Pricing options include single fares for $6.00, day passes for $15.00 and three day (72 hour) passes for $40, a 7- day pass, 168 hours, is $56, or $50.40 if purchased online in advance. Additionally, there are available passes that may be shared by more than one rider: $9 for a 2-ride pass and $35 for a 10-ride pass. These passes are valid for one year from first use. Tickets can be purchased at any monorail station using cash, debit cards or credit cards. If a discount coupon is being used or if other information is required, customer service booths are open in each station between 7 a.m.and 8 p.m. daily. The Monorail is quick, clean and safe, with security guards on duty at each station at night. The downside to the Monorail is that it was completely paid for by the casinos and all the stations are located at the back of the casinos, thereby forcing you to traverse the casino to get to and from the Strip to the station.
The RTC bus system provides service along the Strip as well as to Downtown and the surrounding areas of Las Vegas. Two routes currently run along the Strip. The first, called the Deuce, service is offered 24 hours a day and operates between every 12 to 30 minutes, depending on the time of day. Stops are located near virtually every resort on the Strip.
The second route that runs along the Strip is the Strip & Downtown Express, which offers services between the Las Vegas Premium Outlets and the South Strip Transfer Terminal via Fremont Street, the Strip and the Las Vegas Outlet Center. The service is offered 9 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and operates every 12 to 15 minutes during most hours, with less frequency during early morning hours. Strip & Downtown Express buses stop only at particular stations along the Strip. At these stations, a ticket must be purchased before boarding.
The newest express route to serve the Strip is the Westcliff Airport Express (WAX), which provides fast and convenient service between downtown Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Premium Outlets, the Strip at Tropicana and McCarran International Airport. The line operates every 20 minutes during the morning peak period and every 30 minutes during the afternoon peak period, and hourly during all other hours between approximately 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. The service is available seven days a week.
Fare for the Deuce and Strip & Downtown Express is $6 for a two-hour pass, $8 for a 24-hour pass and $20 for a 3 day pass (2014 prices). Fare for the Westcliff Airport Express is $2 one way. McCarran Airport has public transportation from the "Zero" level at terminal 1. That is one level below the baggage pick up level. Turn right upon exit and the bus stop is about 25 yards from the doors. A Medicare card and $1.00 will get you on the bus. $2.00 regular fare (be sure to have $1 bills as they do not provide change).
Catch the WAX bus at the airport (T1 and T3), which is $1.00 with a Medicare card or $2.00 regular fare, and it will take you right to the NYNY casino or Fremont Street Experience at the end of the overhead display canopy by The D. Figure on about a 45-50 minute ride to Downtown. You can also buy a bus pass at the Binion and Golden Nugget WAX return stop from an automated machine for visits to the Strip at Tropicana. Public Bus transportation on the Strip is limited to the Deuce and Strip&Downtown Express (SDX). There are certain discounts available for seniors, children, disabled and long term passes, but these must be purchased on-line and/or at the bus terminal Downtown.
The RTC buses do not use transfers as some other systems. If your destination is not on the line you board, then get a 2-hour or 24-hour pass.
There are two types of fare card machines for the buses. On the Strip, the fare cards are as listed above ($6 and $8). However, there are some other machines just off the Strip that offer fare cards for $5 for 24 hours and they take credit cards. Very convenient, but you have to look for them. The lower cost passes are good on any of the RTC buses, even the Deuce.

Finally, several resorts provide regular shuttle service along the Strip, free to all riders. The most extensive is the purple bus that leaves the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino hourly between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., stopping at various other Strip resorts.
Taxis are always readily available at the taxi stands in front of all of the major Strip resorts.
Complimentary shuttles are available from certain hotel chain properties, if you don't mind waiting about 30-40 minutes during peak times.
There are also several complimentary trams available, mainly on the western side of the Strip. These trams typically connect properties under common ownership (e.g. MGM Mirage). The first tram connects Excalibur with Luxor and Mandalay Bay to the south. From Excalibur, the tram runs express southbound to Mandalay Bay.On the northbound trip, the tram makes a stop at Luxor before returning to Excalibur. There are also two other trams available: The CityCenter tram connects the Crystals Mall to Monte Carlo and Bellagio. There is also another tram that connects Treasure Island with The Mirage.
You may hear these trams referred to as monorails too and they should not be confused with the monorail that charges for rides.
