James Brown was called a coward April 15 for failing to show up for his sentencing to life in prison for his murder of four women in his Sterling Heights home.
By not attending, Brown avoided facing potential verbal wrath from the family and friends of the four Detroit women, all their 20s, whom he murdered in pairs in December 2011.
“Mr. Brown, as we can see today, at the end of the day, is nothing but a coward,” Judge James Biernat Jr. said from the bench. “This is a life sentence for these children of these four women, and all their families.
“I never would think in a million years that sentencing someone to life is not enough, but it’s almost like he’s getting a break somehow for what he did to these four women. The man is nothing but a coward.”
Biernat’s comments were met with approval from many of the more than two dozen people in the gallery.
“He is a big-time coward. If you did the crime, face the people and the music,” said Denise Higgins, the mother of murder victim Vernithea McCrary.
Brown, 26, received four terms of life without parole for the asphyxiation deaths of Renesha Landers, 23, and Demesha Hunt, 24, on Dec. 19, 2011, and Natasha Curtis, 29, and McCrary, 28, all from Detroit, six days later. He met them in pairs over backpage.com for prostitution. He placed their bodies in pairs in the trunks of two vehicles and left them on the east side of Detroit near where he was raised.
The four victims had six children among them.
Curtis’ mother, Pamela Curtis, donned a T-shirt with her daughter’s photograph on the front. She now cares for her daughter’s two children.
She agreed with Biernat’s description.
“He’s a coward. I wanted him to see what he did to me,” Curtis said. “He killed my baby on her birthday. I wanted him to be here so he could see my face. He took my best friend from me. I’m a Christian. I would forgive him, but I will never forget what he did to me.”
Higgins said despite Michigan’s lack of a death penalty, Brown will meet that fate. The victims had big circles of friends and family.
“I’ve already had communications from people and how they feel,” Higgins said. “I’m sure he’s not going to make it. Those ladies were very much loved, very much. There are a lot of family and friends who are feeling great loss and great sorrow.
“Even though Michigan don’t have the death penalty, where he’s going, they do. … He’s worried and he should be. They got their own justice system, and he knows he’s going to have to face it.”
She said some people believe these four women weren’t Brown’s first victims.
“There’s a lot of people that’s in there looking around wondering if one of their loved ones was one of his victims,” she said.
Brown, who has been housed in the Macomb County Jail, made known his desire to skip the hearing last month in a presentence report. He reiterated that earlier this month to his defense attorney, Jeffery Cojocar, and again April 15 to Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Geml, who heads courthouse security.
“I know what I’m looking at, so it doesn’t matter about sentencing,” Brown wrote. “I know I’m getting natural life.”
Attorneys said it’s rare for a defendant to not show up but it is allowed. Assistant Prosecutor Therese Tobin, who has prosecuted thousands of cases, said she has never seen a defendant not show up for their punishment.
Brown was convicted by a jury following a more than three-week trial. He was found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of disinterment or mutilation of a body and two counts of arson for burning one of the vehicles.
Brown was arrested May 1, 2011, after police identified Brown from the victims’ cell phone records even though their phones were not recovered.
He initially denied knowing the women, then admitted he was with them but that they died from bad marijuana or natural causes.
