The name "St. Lucie" is origĀiĀnally deĀrived from the name of a setĀtleĀment near Jupiterā Inlet which was founded on St. Lucia's day in 1566. Due to nuĀmerĀous erĀrors, the name later came to be asĀsoĀciĀated with the preĀsent day town of St.ā Lucieā VilĀlage,ā Florida, north of preĀsent day Port St. Lucie. After "Laā Florida" and "St.ā AuĀgusĀtine," it is the oldĀest place name in the United States.[11] In the early 1890s, an early piĀoĀneer setĀtleĀment named Spruce Bluff was loĀcated along the St. Lucie River, which conĀsisted of a comĀmuĀnity of sevĀeral famĀiĀlies with a school, post ofĀfice, pineapĀple planĀtaĀtion, and sawmill. CurĀrently, the land the setĀtleĀment was loĀcated on is part of the Spruce Bluff PreĀserve. Along with an old cemeĀtery near the old setĀtleĀment, the preĀserve also conĀtains a hikĀing area, canoe acĀcess, obĀserĀvaĀtion areas, and a preĀhisĀtoric Ais InĀdian mound loĀcated on the southĀern end of the preĀserve.
In the 1950s, the land that would evenĀtuĀally beĀcome Port St. Lucie was a largely unĀinĀhabĀited tract of land south of Whiteā City, comĀposed of a fishĀing camp (Burt Pruitt's Fishin' Farm) along the St. Lucie River,[12] a few farms and busiĀnesses near U.S.ā 1. In 1958, with a budĀget of $5, the GenĀeralā DeĀvelĀopĀmentā CorĀpoĀraĀtion (GDC) purĀchased the River Park deĀvelĀopĀment and 40,000 acres (160Ā km2) along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.[13] In 1959, the GDC opened its first bridge over the St. Lucie River, alĀlowĀing for diĀrect auĀtoĀmoĀbile acĀcess to Port St. Lucie.
By FebĀruĀary 25, 1961 there were 250 homes in the new city. GDC reĀquested the state legĀisĀlaĀture to inĀcorĀpoĀrate 70 miles (110Ā km), along with the River Park setĀtleĀment, into the City of Port St. Lucie. River Park did not inĀcorĀpoĀrate into the city at the reĀquest of its resĀiĀdents. Port St. Lucie beĀcame a city on April 27, 1961 with the pasĀsage of House Bill No. 953, proĀposed by State RepĀreĀsenĀtaĀtive RuĀpert Smith and apĀproved by Florida GovĀerĀnor C.ā FarĀrisā Bryant.[citationā needed]
In the early 1990s, Core ComĀmuĀniĀties (CC), acĀquired and began planĀning what would beĀcome St. Lucie West. OrigĀiĀnally, St. Lucie West was to have conĀtained about 14,000 homes over a 20-year peĀriod on 7 square miles (18Ā km2). But after reĀalĀizĀing the comĀmuĀnity's strateĀgic poĀsiĀtion, they began deĀvelĀopĀing it into more than just a resĀiĀdenĀtial area. CC began buildĀing busiĀness secĀtors and places of enĀterĀtainĀment and leisure. That reĀsulted in 7,000 jobs being brought to the small town, helpĀing it into its boom durĀing most of the early 2000s.[citationā needed]
In 2006, CC started deĀvelĀopĀment of its newest comĀmuĀnity, TraĀdiĀtion. The comĀmuĀnity, which sits west of the InĀterĀstate 95 inĀterĀchange with Gatlin Blvd., was a large catĀtle ranch beĀfore CC began to deĀvelop it. There they built around 13,000,000 square feet (1,200,000Ā m2) of comĀmerĀcial area, and room for over 18,000 resĀiĀdences. AcĀcordĀing to CC's webĀsite, TraĀdiĀtion is the largest fully enĀtiĀtled resĀiĀdenĀtial deĀvelĀopĀment area from the tip of InĀterĀstate 95 to the CanadaāU.S.ā borĀder. It is modĀeled after a 1950s-era town. AcĀcordĀing to its webĀsite, TraĀdiĀtion Square, the town cenĀter of the comĀmuĀnity, holds fesĀtivĀiĀties year-round. It was also choĀsen as the site of HGTV's Green Home 2009, and one of AmerĀica's best 100 communities.[citationā needed]
In 2007, the housĀing marĀket began to colĀlapse and unĀemĀployĀment started to rise. As of FebĀruĀary 2009, unĀemĀployĀment was at 10Ā½ perĀcent and in 2008, nearly 11,000 homes went into foreĀcloĀsure. This prompted the county govĀernĀment to conĀsider deĀclarĀing itĀself a disĀasĀter area. Doing so would have given county adĀminĀisĀtraĀtors acĀcess to $17 milĀlion in county emerĀgency reĀserve funds. That money, comĀbined with a transĀportaĀtion fund and other acĀcounts, would give St. Lucie $20 ā $30 milĀlion to spend on buildĀing proĀjects: reĀsearch parks, highĀways and other inĀfraĀstrucĀture improvements.[14]
In 2008, TraĀdiĀtion and Core ComĀmuĀniĀties welĀcomed the Florida CenĀter of InĀnoĀvaĀtion (later reĀnamed TraĀdiĀtion CenĀter for InĀnoĀvaĀtion), a 150-acre priĀvately-owned reĀsearch park dedĀiĀcated to drug disĀcovĀery, imĀmunolĀogy and medĀical deĀvices, and healthĀcare. TCI iniĀtially comĀposed of TorĀreyā Pinesā InĀstiĀtuteā forā MolĀeĀcĀuĀlarā StudĀies, OreĀgon Health and SciĀence UniĀverĀsityās VacĀcine and Gene TherĀapy InĀstiĀtute (VGTI), MarĀtin Health SysĀtem HosĀpiĀtal (TraĀdiĀtion MedĀical CenĀter), and Mann ReĀsearch CenĀter. In 2015, VGTI shut down their TCI faĀcilĀity, and Mann ReĀsearch CenĀter soon folĀlowed. As of 2019, only TorĀrey Pines and TraĀdiĀtion MedĀical CenĀter reĀmain in TCI.
In 2017, TAMCO, a subĀsidiary of City ElecĀtric SupĀply, a famĀily-owned elecĀtriĀcal wholeĀsale busiĀness, creĀated plans with the Port St. Lucie City CounĀcil to conĀstruct a $38 milĀlion, 400,000 square foot manĀuĀfacĀturĀing and disĀtriĀbĀuĀtion cenĀter loĀcated in the TraĀdiĀtion ComĀmerce Park.[15] ConĀstrucĀtion of the TAMCO faĀcilĀity began in 2018 and was comĀpleted in late 2019.[16]
