SPP is at an Energy Emergency Alert Level 3. As of a few minutes ago, load curtailments have started. OMPA staff will be contacting your cities OMPA staff will try to give you as much notice as we possibly can, but we are not getting much notice on when these curtailments will happen from the transmission operators. You may want to let your customers know that outages could and will be happening across the state.
An EEA3 signals that SPP is operating with reserves below the required minimum and may mean that SPP directs power suppliers to curtail energy use through controlled interruptions of service. That request has not been made at this time, but may be made soon.
Nestor Valencia You close all public buildings you not need to save energy
Bill Platt It was my understanding that the City of Ponca City updated its diesel generators, just before switching to OG&E sourced electricity.

At the time, the city said the new diesel generators at the plant on Union Street were going to be backup generators...Ещё
Due to extreme cold in the forecast the Ponca City Sr. Center will be closed for the remainder of the week. The center is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday the 23rd.
Savannah Stevens Make sure you turn down the heat like your telling all your customers to do.
Kris Denison Gina Jackson Bowman ...I want to go here sometime when and if. It would be a nice time. 👍💜
An important message from your local electric utility:
An Energy Emergency Level 3 has been issued for our region, due to generation usage that has exceeded available resources. As such, the regulatory authority for our region, the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), has issued a response that includes controlled service interruptions for electric customers.
PSO, WFEC, and OGE are responsible for managing the load shedding event, and as such, OMPA will likely not know which cities wi…ll be affected and when. Please contact us immediately if you are notified or have your load shed. These interruptions will be 1-2 hours and on a rotation basis.
The emergency response is a result of a number of factors, including extreme cold weather, high electricity usage across the entire region, an inadequate supply of natural gas, and a low supply of wind generation. On Monday, the region as a whole set a new record for winter peak load.
During this time, customers with power are urged to continue to reduce electricity and natural gas usage as much as possible. They can do so by taking the following steps:
• Set thermostats lower than usual, if health permits
• Postpone using major electric appliances such as stoves, dishwashers, and clothes dryers until the demand for electricity decreases
• Turn off electric lights and appliances that you do not need or are not using, and
• Keep doors, windows and blinds shut to retain heat in houses
Elaine Shaw Better not lose electricity. I have to be able to stay warm. Many people rely on central heat to stay warm...this is nuts.
Amber Jo Irwin What about house that are all electric people with small children will freeze temperatures quickly when its -20 below
The Library will close at 5:00 p.m. today due to the weather.
They will decide on our opening/closing tomorrow as the weather permits.
Michael Giebel Why talk to citizens about turning things off and conserving power when you keep an entire library up and running when it’s not essential and using a lot of electricity to light and heat it?????
Sherry Bonawitz Kean It is also a warming place for many and also provides computer access for many. Read a book as it takes less energy than a tv
The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) declared an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) Level 3 at 10:08 a.m.
An EEA3 signals that SPP is operating with reserves below the required minimum and may mean that SPP directs power suppliers to curtail energy use through controlled interruptions of service. That request has not been made at this time, but may be made soon. Should curtailments be required, OMPA MAY NOT have ample warning on when these curtailments will happen. We will try to give yo…u as much notice as we possibly can, but again, OMPA may not get much notice on when these curtailments will happen from the transmission operators.
If curtailments have to be taken, OMPA will provide further communication, as well as language member utilities can use to communicate to their customers about the situation. We ask that you continue to urge your customers on the severity of this issue and ask them to conserve electricity and natural gas where they can. OMPA will continue to keep you updated as we navigate through this situation.
Sunie Stolhand Will City offices and nonessential businesses be asked to close, to conserve energy?
I know this would be a hardship on some but I worry greatly about our elderly and very young who need the electricity in their homes right now.
Lacey Curtains So the city can't handle a lot of its residents using their power and heat at the same time for 2 days lmfao! Can't wait to see the electric bill.
The Solid Waste department is out collecting trash, but due to snow drifts and slick conditions in some areas, we will not be able to collect everyone’s trash today. We will pick up any extra trash that was missed on their next collection day which will be this Thursday.
Tanya Gibson Thank you for all you do. Be safe!! Trash can wait.
Amee Lea Send them home! It’s to cold for them to have to be out Trash can wait!
A declared emergency due to scarce electricity resources in our region has been raised another level, to Level 2. It includes a renewed call for our industrial, commercial and residential utility customers to conserve as much electricity and natural gas as they can for at least the next 48 hours.
The Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the Regional Transmission Operator for our wholesale power supplier the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority, had previously issued an Energy Emergency …Alert (EEA) Level 1, which meant that SPP was experiencing conditions where all available resources were needed. In Level 2, an official appeal to public conservation is made. This is an attempt to avoid Level 3, which would mean SPP would be energy deficient and could implement controlled service interruptions on a temporary basis.
Customers are asked to take these conservation requests seriously. They can take the following steps to conserve energy and natural gas:
• Set thermostats lower than usual, if health permits
• Postpone using major electric appliances such as stoves, dishwashers, and clothes dryers until the demand for electricity decreases
• Turn off electric lights and appliances that you do not need or are not using, and
• Keep doors, windows and blinds shut to retain heat in houses
Energy emergency alerts are due to a number of factors resulting from widespread, long-lasting and extreme cold weather. These factors include, but are not limited to, high electricity use across the entire SPP system, inadequate supply and high prices of natural gas, and low supply of wind generation and wind-forecast uncertainty.
Teresa Ann Energy shortage in part due to frozen wind turbines per Texas Grid Operators statement.
James Slater For some reason I always thought we had tie-ins to the nations power grid. Spose' I gotta do a bit more research.
The City of Ponca City is urging all our industrial, commercial, and residential customers to conserve as much energy and natural gas as they can. This is a conservation effort to mitigate the risk of possible outages.
The Southwest Power Pool, the Regional Transmission Operator for our wholesale power supplier the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority and the entire state of Oklahoma, is recommending that load-serving utilities throughout the entire region, which includes Ponca… City, take conservation measures beginning at midnight central time on Monday, February 15 and for the following 48 hours.
All Ponca City customers are encouraged to operate as conservatively as they can to mitigate the risk of worsening conditions. Electricity customers can take the following steps to conserve energy and natural gas:
• Set thermostats power than normal if health permits
• Postpone using major electric appliances such as stoves, dishwashers, and clothes dryers until the demand for electricity decreases, and
• Turn off electric lights and appliances that you do not need or are not using.
“End-use customers in the SPP region should follow their local utilities’ instructions regarding the potential for outages, the need to conserve electricity or natural gas, and other steps to ensure their safety and the integrity of the regional grid”- SPP Press Release
Earlier today the SPP issued an Energy Emergency Alert Level 1 (EEA1). This alert means that all available generation resources are committed to meet load.
During this cold snap, hardly any renewables in the SPP market can be utilized due to the freezing temperatures so the entire market is having to rely mainly on fossil fuel generating units to meet the increased demand. Natural gas prices are soaring in our region due to supply and demand, along with the freezing temperatures impacting some pipelines. Due to the high demand and the spike in natural gas prices, we are experiencing extremely high energy costs during this time so any form of conservation by our customers would help to save you money in the long run.
A reduction in usage will be a tremendous help as the demands on critical infrastructure in Oklahoma reach their peak.
Patrick Rodke I find it funny that my gas and electric bill has almost doubled despite the same usage I’ve always had and then you guys want to try to tell me stop using what you’re charging me double what you used to charge for it
Debbie Redmond I already conserve as much as possible to save on utilities any colder in my old house pipes would freeze we sit around in sweats heavy socks and hoodies and sleep in them
Here are are a few things residents can expect if we receive the snow that is predicted:
*Crews will follow the City's Snow & Ice Removal Plan
*Residential roads will not be cleared
*Residents may not be able to leave their homes
*Trash and storm debris collection could be delayed
Happy Valentines Day! Please stay in if at all possible and stay warm! Check on your neighbors and the elderly during these extreme cold temperatures!
It is extremely cold!
The Utility Maintenance Department would like to help prevent costly plumbing repairs or damage to your home. The forecast predicting extremely cold weather and low wind chills causes lots of water issues and hopefully following these tips will help!
1. If you have had problems with frozen pipes in the past, keep a trickle of water running from the highest faucet in your house. During extremely cold periods, this trickle should be the size of a pencil …point. You will be billed for the water used but this procedure may help prevent more costly plumbing repairs resulting from broken pipes.
2. Disconnect and drain the garden hose connection. This will help prevent outside faucets and pipes from freezing, leaking or breaking.
3. Close outside vents, crawl spaces and doors so cold air doesn’t seep inside.
4. If a sink is located against an outside wall, open the cabinet doors overnight to allow warm air to reach water pipes.
5. If you have an empty house: If you plan to turn the heat off, drain all the water from the pipes, toilets and water heater. Turn off the power source to the water heater. If your heater operates on gas, turn the heater on “pilot.”
6. Wrap pipes subject to cold or freezing in heat tape available from hardware stores. It must be kept plugged in all winter.
SPACE HEATER SAFETY
Space heaters account for 43 percent of U.S. home heating fires and 85 percent of associated deaths. Safety should always be a top consideration when using space heaters. Here are some tips for keeping your home safe and warm when it’s cold outside:
• Inspect heaters for cracked or broken plugs or loose connections before each use. If frayed, worn or damaged, do not use the heater.
• Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you're leaving a …room or going to sleep, and don't let pets or children play too close to a space heater.
• Space heaters are only meant to provide supplemental heat and should never be used to warm bedding, cook food, dry clothing or thaw pipes.
• Proper placement of space heaters is critical. Heaters must be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including papers, clothing and rugs.
• Locate space heaters out of high traffic areas and doorways where they may pose a tripping hazard.
• Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, which could overheat and result in a fire. Do not plug any other electrical devices into the same outlet as the heater.
• Place space heaters on level, flat surfaces. Never place heaters on cabinets, tables, furniture, or carpet, which can overheat and start a fire.
• Always unplug and safely store the heater when it is not in use.
