CHICAGO (CBS) -- The owners of Backpage.com on Monday shut down the "adult" section on the online-classified advertising site, just hours after a U.S. Senate committee released a report that found the site knowingly aided users in posting ads for prostitution and child sex trafficking.
The 53-page report issued Monday by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations is the most scathing probe yet of the controversial online marketplace built by the founders of the Village Voice. The site had become a frequent target of Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who was sued by the company after he wrote letters to credit card companies asking them not to handle transactions for Backpages.
Dart's efforts earned a rebuke from the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, which likened his efforts to use his office to discourage the card companies to cut ties with Backpage to "suffocating" the Backpage out of existence, language the website operators repeated in a press release.
"As federal appeals court Judge Richard Posner has described, the goal is either to 'suffocate' Backpage out of existence or use the awesome powers of the government to force Backpage to follow in the footsteps of Craigslist and abandon its Adult advertising section," the release states.
As of late Monday, ads in the "Adult" section of the site— which includes ads in categories including "escorts," "body rubs" and "strippers & strip clubs" all were marked "censored," with links leading to a message that read: "The government has unconstitutionally censored this content. What happened? Find out." Subsequent links led to letters from Backpage founders Michael Lacey and James Larkin, and statements from supportive members of law enforcement and free speech advocates.
Lacey and Larkin, as well as current Backpage owner Carl Ferrer, all were slated to appear as witnesses before the subcommittee on Tuesday. Also scheduled to appear are the parents of three girls who claim they forced into prostitution facilitated by Backpage ads.
The report found that Lacey and Larkin retain control of Backpage through a series of shell companies, despite claims they sold to the a Dutch company for $600 million in 2014. The report also found that Backpage "sanitized" ads for illegal sex and sex with minors, editing out terms like "teen" or "Lolita" automatically or rejecting ads with certain terms.
The company also got some good news Monday: the U.S. Surpreme Court declined a hearing on a case filed by three Massachusetts women who sued Backpage.com, claiming they were forced into prostitution as minors by pimps who used the website. Lower courts had ruled that the 1996 Communications Decency Act protected Backpage and other online companies from criminal liability for content posted by people that use their sites.
Dart has long campaigned against Backpages, frequently using ads on the site to enact prostitution stings.
In 2015, Dart wrote a letter to MasterCard and Visa asking "as the Sheriff of Cook County, a father and a caring citizen" that the companies to stop processing transactions from the site, a move that prompted a lawsuit by Backpage accusing Dart of "coercive censorship."

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago woman is suing the online classified ad website Backpage.com, saying Backpage is partly responsible for her teenage daughter's death on Christmas Eve.
The body of 16-year-old Desiree Robinson was found in a garage in Markham.
A 32-year-old man has been charged with the murder, a man prosecutors say had paid for sex and met Robinson through Backpage.com.
Robinson's family said she never would have met that man if people who were acting as pimps hadn't taken an ad out in Backpage.com, an ad featuring Robinson. WBBM's Steve Miller reports.
"The events that led to Desiree Robinson's death took place because she had become a victim of sex trafficking and was featured in solicitation posts on the controversial website backpage.com. Backpage.com is the subject of a number of investigations around the country for alleged sex trafficking activity. On the night of Desiree Robinson's death, the girl was reportedly brought to meet the defendant by two people who were unknown to her family. The website backpage.com is regarded by the Cook County Sheriff's Anti-Trafficking Task Force as a vehicle for pimps to manipulate young people for money," a Romanucci & Blandin, LLC release on the civil case read.
Desiree Robinson's mother, Yvonne Ambrose spoke about her daughter being victimized.
"My family cannot begin to explain the horror and the pain of this situation," Ambrose said. "Knowing that my daughter was victimized by people, by a business and by a system that destroys young lives. My daughter was a beautiful child, involved in her school and community, and our lives will never be the same without her. This awful system must be stopped so that Desiree's experiences never happen to another young person again."
Yvonne Ambrose's attorneys wouldn't let her talk to reporters about how her daughter had ended up as a victim of sex trafficking, but she talked about her life as a good student - a girl ready to help the needy.
"November of 2015, for Thanksgiving, her and I fed the homeless with our church," Abrose said. "She was very actively involved in church.
"Involved in all sorts of sports in her schools. She excelled at everything. Track and field, basketball. You name it. She excelled."
Ambrose's attorneys said Backpage coaches sex traffickers on how to write ads so they can fly below the radar of law enforcement.
"The tragic manipulation, sex trafficking and murder of Desiree Robinson exemplify the horrific abuses taking place on Backpage.com every day. This complaint goes after Backpage.com and others who knowingly encourage and make money off this disgusting activity. We are committed to making sure this egregious behavior stops and that those responsible are brought to justice," said Gina Arquilla DeBoni, Managing Attorney, Romanucci & Blandin, LLC, in a statment.
Backpage agreed to take some "adult services" ads off its website - but some have questioned whether it's living up to that.
WBBM has asked Backpage.com for a response.

CHICAGO (STMW) - A 27-year-old woman appeared in court Thursday after being charged with promoting prostitution through an ad on Backpage.com.
An undercover police officer responded to the advertisement in the dating section of online classified ad site, an ad that appeared to be soliciting prostitution, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
Jessica Bealer of the 4700 block of South Calumet placed the ad on the free site, rented a room in a Schiller Park hotel, and made a profit from another woman’s prostitution, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
The other woman was taken into custody for prostitution, according to police.
Bealer was ordered held on a $20,000 bond Thursday, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
