Don't do business with Exceptional Dental Mid City. I called for an …emergency visit and they are refusing to see me because a man I last saw 18 days ago has since died of Covid-19. I have no symptoms and I take my temperature every day, no fever. They said I have to wait 30 days, a number they apparently pulled out of their butt, since the quarantine time for an exposure is 15 days. I'm a behavioral health nurse on a unit where no suspected infections are allowed. I can't stay home, and I keep going to work and care for my patients who need care. I am grieving the sudden loss of a friend. I can't believe I am being denied care, under the claim they are protecting their staff. Everyone has been around someone with the coronavirus, because it's everywhere. There is no justification for this. Ещё

Congratulations to the Giant Salvinia Control Patrol. This grassroots effort to keep an invasive plant from clogging up our Bayou St. John — without the use of herbicides — has been named Conservation Organization of the Year by the Louisiana Wildlife Federation.
Julian Kelly We have a Giant Salvinia infestation at our duck lease, and put Giant Asian weevils on it. The weevils ate the Salvinia, without eating any of the surrounding vegetation.
Only one Mid-City restaurant — Blue Oak at Carrollton and Dumaine — made the Eater NOLA list of best patio experiences. Maybe these folks should spend more time in Mid-City and Bayou St. John?

EVENT CANCELLED! I hate to do it, but we're going to need to cancel this morning's clean-up in Mid-City due to incoming inclement weather. It may look pretty ou…tside right now, but there are scattered thunderstorms coming into our area starting around 8AM. We can't have people outside in lightning and there are just too many storms on radar moving our way.
Look for the reschedule date on the TrashMob Page and thanks so much for your continued support!
For K15, join Katrina Service Days -- a socially distanced extravaganza, lasting from Aug. 22 to Sept. 7. Thanks, Mid-City Neighborhood Organization

Now this from Mid-City's one and only bookstore.
Well, as if 2020 wasn't already the worst, on Wednesday evening, a pipe burst in the ceiling of our new location, and the bookstore flooded. We lost many boxes …of books that were still on the floor, all of our brand new bookshelves, many of our rental board games, and much of our sanity.
Luckily, as you know, we are resilient, so this isn't the end of us! We're salvaging and repairing, and although this will certainly set us back longer than anticipated, we do still plan to open in our new location. Our floors have already been ripped up and will hopefully be replaced soon. There may also be some wall repairs needed to mitigate mold.
We are still operating while repairs are being done. If you've already placed an order, we will contact you within the next few days. If you place an order now, we're offering free local delivery on $40 or more, and we can still ship directly to you. We're also happy to hold your order until pickup is available again. Pickup is suspended until repairs are complete.
We have a lot of work to do, so we'd really appreciate you tossing us a coin if you can, whether through buying something, buying a gift card, or donating to our virtual tip jar.
As always, we appreciate your support and understanding as we yet again get back on our feet. We can't wait for everyone to finally see our wonderful new location!

The Broad has been a shining star in Mid-City since its opening in 2016. Repeated flooding hasn't fazed it over the years, but it has struggled with the rest of the entertainment industry through the pandemic. Owner Brian Knighten has decided to turn off the projectors and close the doors for a while. With community support, it will only be temporary. As he says in the post below: "Our customers have always pulled us through the challenges of being at the deep end of Broad, and we have no doubt you all will be there for us when we return."
I originally drafted a long letter announcing our closure that echoed the sounds of so many other small business owners - lack of national leadership, regulatio…ns unfair to small businesses, etc - and while I do wholeheartedly agree with all the notes I have read, writing another one didn't feel right. Our theater lives in a neighborhood that has long dealt with challenges from within and from the outside. The residents of Treme, Esplande, Mid City, 7th Ward, and New Orleans as a whole, are resilient people who have faced tragedy before and come out better as a result. While this tragedy is much different than Katrina, the darkness that overcame us is just as heavy. We must remember in the aftermath of Katrina, and the destruction all around, we felt that if we worked hard, had a little help from our neighbors and the government, we could overcome and get to the other side. With every day of work, we felt a little better. So instead of a sorrowful letter about our closure, we are going to use those lessons from Katrina and remember the darkest hour is always just before daylight. We will reopen, we will build back a safe experience for our staff and customers, and we will use this time to adjust our business model to continue to be a vital part of our neighborhood and this city. Our customers have always pulled us through the challenges of being at the deep end of Broad, and we have no doubt you all will be there for us when we return. God bless. - Brian Knighten, owner
*To clarify, I think local leadership from the state government and the Mayor's office has been great. Nationally we have no unified plan on how to move us forward, and that became more evident today when no legislation was presented for continued support for individuals, families and small businesses. Now is the time for big ideas.
