Something went wrong, but donβt fret β letβs give it another shot.
Eliminating Homewood's prostitution problem isn't about going after the girls, said Tajuan McCarty --founder of the Birmingham-based anti-trafficking organization The Wellhouse --it's about going after the pimps and Johns. "These women are victims," said McCarty in front of a standing-room only crowd Wednesday evening at Seeds Coffee , "whether they are willing participants or not. She is a princess; she is someone's daughter. We love them right where they are at and help them along the way." Dozens of Homewood residents gathered in the Oxmoor Road coffee house to hear what McCarty had to say. The event was organized by West Homewood resident Andy Conaway, who, along with a group of others, is spearheading efforts to eliminate issues that plague their neighborhood--including prostitution. McCarty, who at the tender age of 15 was herself lured into the dark world of prostitution, spared no details Wednesday night--just steps from the cheap hotel rooms where prostitutes sit and wait under the watchful eyes of their pimps. Make no mistake, she said, Birmingham is a hub of prostitution. "Most people want to believe 'this is not happening in my backyard,"' said McCarty. But the truth is, she said, there are both grown women and children being trafficked in plain sight. One of the young women she was asked to counsel, said McCarty, was a 17-year old girl rescued in Homewood. The girl had been kicked out of the prostitution ring she was part of, said McCarty, because she was "too old." The trap is set early, she said, when girls are full of insecurity and looking for validation.
"Pimps will talk about how they can walk into any middle school and leave with five girls who willingly run away with them," said McCarty. The girls are then either showered with gifts by "suave" pimps or beaten into submission by "gorilla" pimps. Regardless of how they are treated, however, McCarty says they are always viewed as commodities and not people. "We've never had a pimp come after one of the girls here at The Wellhouse. Can anyone guess why?" she asked the audience. "It's because the girls are 'easily replaceable.'" Though she says being arrested saved her life, McCarty said it is not the best solution. After an arrest, she said, the girls often feel they have no one else to turn to but their pimps. The women are not allowed to keep any of the money they work for, she said, and must rely on their pimps for food, shelter and clothing. Asked if there are ever any cases where women work for themselves, McCarty said absolutely not. "Somebody's got her," she said, "every single time."
McCarty said that on average, women leave and return an average of 11 times before finally finding a way out. Wellhouse posters adorn areas such as Oxmoor Road, she said, with the hope that they will plant a seed in the women to try and find a way out. "This area has been horrible for years," said McCarty. "I'm 44, so we are talking nearly 30 years since I first heard of Oxmoor and the problem was bad back then."
The area, she said, is known for prostitution well outside Alabama's borders.
"Every girl that I have rescued from out of state knows about the area," she said. Of the close to 250 rescues Wellhouse has participated in, she said, roughly 20-25 percent of the women are from out of state.
21 women have been named Women Who Make a Difference, a joint venture between AL.com/The Birmingham News and Red Mountain Theatre Company. Tajuan McCarty is founder and executive director of The WellHouse, a nonprofit, faith-based and Christ-centered agency dedicated to rescuing women from sexual exploitation.
It's an 'epidemic' that has long existed, said McCarty, even in seemingly safe suburbs.
An "Oxmoor" keyword search on backpage.com, for example, pulls up a dozen graphic ads for "adult entertainment," "full body massages," and "late night specials." The ads usually contain a phone numbers Johns can call to arrange a meet up spot at one of the hotels on Oxmoor Road. McCarty said she has heard more than once that the hotel owners themselves profit from backpage interactions. "They get paid extra," she said, "for every visitor a room gets."
Sam Patel, owner of the Econo Lodge hotel where many of the backpage.com ads lead, said he maintains a proactive partnership with city police to try and eliminate any crime at his hotel.
"People who know me, my family and my employees know that if we see any suspicious activity, we are the first ones to call the police," said Patel in a previous interview with AL.com.
Patel said he has recently "beefed up" security for the hotel and makes it a goal to "be on top of anything and everything that we see."
He is currently in talks with the city to redevelop the property.
Asked what the Homewood Police Department has done about to address the prostitution and crime problem in the area, spokesman Sgt. Andrew Didcoct provided the following statement:
"The promotion of criminal activity through the internet has been a nationwide problem for law enforcement. The Homewood Police Department has made a number of arrests for persons using the "backpage" website. The Homewood Police Department will continue to enforce laws related to this and all criminal activity."
Ward 2, Place 1 Councilman Fred Hawkins who was in attendance Wednesday night, said though the city is on the same page as its residents about wanting to eradicate the prostitution and crime problems at West Homewood hotels, the task is more easily said than done. The only way to close down the hotels, he explained, would be to deny the owners a business license and declare them a public nuisance. Often times, however, proving a business is a public nuisance can be tricky, said Hawkins. Nevertheless, he said, Homewood is watching a "number of hotels" to try and do just that. McCarty said that in the meantime, there are a number of things that can be done. The city can for example, she said, make ordinances requiring hotel owners to train staff in recognizing the signs of trafficking. Eventually, she said, she'd like to see societal changes as well. "It should be about helping her and arresting him," she said. "Send her to us and plaster his face all over a billboard." For more information about The Wellhouse and for ways to donate, click here.

It's an 'epidemic' that has long existed, said McCarty, even in suburbs like Homewood.
The "adult only" offerings that litter countless internet pages and are plainly visible in areas such as Oxmoor Road are nothing new to the area, said McCarty. It's a world she's intimately familiar with; 30 years ago, McCarty was herself tangled in the web of prostitution.
"I'm a survivor of trafficking," she said.

"We've seen some of the prostitutes late night around the area," said Homewood resident Chris Sarris, whose family home backs up to the Econo Lodge hotel on Oxmoor. "We don't know if they are the same ones that advertise that they are at the EconoLodge/Oxmoor on backpage.com, but we've definitely seen some of the shady activity going on. Some neighbors have even been approached. Fortunately, I have not had such an incident yet."
It's especially disturbing, said Sarris, because the activity happens so close to Hall Kent Elementary School.
"This prostitution is a huge problem for the area," he said. "I understand it's hard to get cleaned up and that it won't happen overnight, but it is something that has to be done strategically. From neighborhood meetings, we've been told that a sting operation would cost the city a lot of money to do. We have been told that the hotel owner is aware that prostitution is going on and has reported it to the police, but as a neighborhood, we don't understand why nothing has been done about it. The ads keep popping up daily on backpage.com. We understand it's not just one hotel in the area that the problems can be coming from, but we are mostly concerned with the one closest to our homes at the moment."
