HOUSTON, TX — Backpage.com CEO Carl Ferrer appeared in a Houston courtroom Friday morning to face charges related to hosting sex trade advertisements on his adult website.
Ferrer, 55, was arrested Thursday at Bush Intercontinental Airport when his flight from Amsterdam landed.
His arrest came in the wake of a three-year investigation spearheaded by the California Attorney General's office.
Ferrer was arrested on a California arrest warrant connected to a 10-count criminal complaint accusing him of participating in a pimping conspiracy and pimping minors.
Warrants for the arrest of Backpage.com controlling shareholders Michael Lacey and James Larkin have also been issued.
Backpage.com is a well-known site that is often monitored by law enforcement agencies for prostitution and human trafficking.
The arrest was announced in a press release from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton , who referred to Backpage.com as "...a notorious adult website that generates millions of dollars annually from its classified sex ads."
"We cannot allow this evil to endure," he expanded in the prepared statement, referencing the site that he says facilitates modern-day slavery of both children and adults and generates millions of dollars from its classified ads.
"He's looking forward to his day in court, where he gets to battle back on these charges," defense attorney Philip Hilder told the Houston Chronicle.
Meanwhile, Texas authorities are investigating Ferrer for potentially violating state money laundering laws, and issued search warrants in Dallas County for all business and financial records pertaining or relating to Backpage.com, or related to Ferrer, Larkin and Lacey, who are listed in court papers as the founders of Backpage.com.
Ferrer signed an extradition waiver agreeing to leave Texas as soon as possible, and his U.S. passport was confiscated.
Meanwhile, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation issued a statement applauding the actions by the state of Texas, and the state of California in shutting Backpage.com down and expressed optimism that the executives behind Backpage.com will be held accountable for their role in the sex trafficking and exploitation of countless individuals.
"Backpage's profiteering from sex trafficking and prostitution is equivalent to the East India Company's facilitation of the African slave trade," Dawn Hawkins, executive director of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, said in a statement. "All those who hope for a world free from sexual exploitation should be greatly encouraged that the California Attorney's General office has acquired the evidence necessary to finally bring this global kingpin of pimping and sex trafficking to justice."

Protesters outside Dallas City Hall in January chanted "crime knows no time" as city officials considered an ordinance that would close sexually oriented businesses in the early morning hours.
