Are you the type of family who likes to take on the great outdoors? Your adventures don’t have to stop just because you have a baby in tow—you’ll just need the right gear to get you there.
From camping trips to beach days and everything in between, these 11 products will make your outdoor adventures a little bit easier.
You don’t have to be a runner to own a jogging stroller . If you’re a parent who loves to adventure outdoors with your little one along for the ride, a jogger is a great addition to your stroller lineup. This all-terrain model from BOB is one of the best.
This stroller is a beast—in all the right ways. The oversized tires can easily tackle any type of terrain, whether you’re on the gravel path of a hiking trail or walking across the dunes on a sandy beach. There’s a mountain bike-style suspension system that makes for a smooth ride and a 360-degree swivel wheel for easy steering. And there are tons and tons of features like a peek-a-boo window, an XL cargo basket and six storage compartments, reflectors and our favorite, an adjustable nine-position handlebar for parents and caregivers of all different heights.
The Revo Flex is definitely an investment, especially if you’re considering it as a secondary stroller alongside one you already own, but a worthwhile one if you’re a runner or simply looking for a way to get outside more with your family.
At first glance this mat may not look very outdoors-friendly—but it’s actually one of the best investments you can make if you’re a family who likes to enjoy the outdoors.
Gathre mats are simple, straightforward and super functional. (They’re also beautiful, which doesn’t hurt either.) Made from bonded leather on one side and flocked suede on the other, the mats are super portable, fold down compactly and—most importantly—clean with just a quick wipe, shake or even a hosing off. They make a soft, clean spot to gather for beach days, park days or whatever type of day you have in mind.
You’ll figure out pretty quickly after scrolling through reviews of beach tents and umbrellas that a lot of them don’t work nearly as well as promised. Most are tough to put together, fall apart quickly and don’t offer a ton of shade. The Sport-Brella is (thankfully) different.
This hybrid umbrella + tent provides ample shade from the hot sun whether you’re on the beach, watching a game, camping or doing pretty much anything else outside. There’s a telescoping pole for stability and vents on each side to keep the umbrella in place when it’s windy. It’s not as easy to use as a pop-up tent, but it’s a lot more stable, and setup should only take you a minute or two after a little practice.
Babywearing is a great way to keep your little one close and comfy while you’re taking on the great outdoors. It also cuts down big-time on the amount of gear you’ll be lugging around, which is always appreciated.
The Omni 360 Cool Air carrier from Ergobaby is ideal for any and all outdoor adventures. Made entirely of mesh, it’s lightweight, breathable and will keep you cooler than most standard carriers. There are four carry positions (inward front, forward front, hip and back) and can be used from day one until your little one hits 45 pounds.
This is definitely not the little red wagon you remember from your childhood.
The Veer Cruiser takes everything you know about the traditional wagon and turns it on its head, transforming it into a completely original cruiser that can tackle any outdoor adventure. The unique hybrid design pushes, turns and steers just like a stroller but pulls like a wagon. The oversized wheels can tackle sand, snow and gravel, and you can even attach a car seat to it, making it adaptable for infants, toddlers and bigger kids. It folds flat for storage and fits in the trunk of most cars. It’s an investment, but if you’re an outdoorsy family that likes to hit spots a bit off the beaten path, you’ll get a ton of use out of it for years.
A hiking baby carrier is a must-have if you’re a family who plans on hitting the trails (or anywhere else a stroller can’t go) with your little one in tow. Deuter’s Kid Comfort carrier is a highly reviewed favorite loved by parents for its overall fit, comfort and storage space.
The pack features a light aluminum frame and lots of spots for custom adjustments including the hip belt, shoulder straps and torso section—which is key if you’re sharing the carrier with wearers of different heights. The biggest rave by far is about the way the carrier distributes weight; the arched design puts most of your child’s weight on your hips, making it easier to comfortably carry them even for long distances.
A bike seat is a safe, fun way to take your little one along on all of your biking adventures. This seat from iBert offers a fun twist on the traditional rear-mounted bike seat by giving your child a chance to sit up front for a better view of the scenery.
You’ll be able to use this bike seat once your little one is old enough to sit up by themselves while wearing a helmet. (For most kids, this happens around the one year mark or so.) We like the view the front mount offers, but we also like that it gives the adult rider a better center of gravity and increased mobility when compared to a rear-mounted seat. You’ll also skip the dirt and rocks that can sometimes become an issue if your little one is riding behind you. The seat comes in three fun colors and features a padded steering wheel for your toddler to hold onto while they’re along for the ride.
No one likes to be cold—especially babies and toddlers. Half the battle of enjoying the outdoors with young children is making sure they’re dressed for the weather and are warm and cozy no matter what the temperature is outside.
This bunting from popular outdoor brand Patagonia is the warmest one they make. It’s made from 700-fill-power 100% recycled down that’s sure to keep the cold out no matter the temperature. There are tons of thoughtful features built in, like a three-panel hood, a windproof shell, two full-length zippers with internal wind flaps and fold-over mitt and foot covers. The bunting is also extra long so it will work if your little one is sitting, crawling or standing. Since it’s on the pricier side, we recommend sizing up so you’ll get the longest use out if it.
Keeping your baby safe and contained when you’re at home can be a bit of a parenting feat. Add the outdoors to that equation and things get pretty overwhelming pretty quickly.
The GoPod offers a solution for two common challenges when you’re out and about with your little one. It’s a place for them to stand and play, keeping them close to the action but contained in their own safe space. It’s also portable and lightweight, two key features when you’re looking for travel-friendly gear. It weighs about seven pounds and folds up quickly and neatly into a carry bag so you can sling it over your shoulder and take it wherever you need to go.
You can use the GoPod from about four months until your little one starts to walk. (It has four seat height positions so it grows along with your baby.) There are five nylon loops to hold toys in place as well as a drink and snack holder. We love it for things like camping trips, beach days or even watching older siblings’ sports games.
Every parent should keep a sun hat in their diaper bag, but especially if you’re a family that spends a lot of time outdoors. This UPF 50+ option from iPlay is lightweight and easily packable and offers great protection from harmful rays.
This hat has all the features you should look for in a baby sun hat: a wide brim, an adjustable tie string with a toggle for a secure fit, and ultraviolet protection. It’s also made from wicking material, making it extra comfortable when it gets warm and helping it dry quickly if the hat gets wet.

Feeling stir crazy? Scoop your little one up and try out one of these (socially distant) outdoor activities for babies.

Warm weather and sunshine means lots of fun firsts for your little one. Your child might not be ready for Wiffle ball and Capture the Flag just yet, but there are plenty of great outdoor activities for babies to choose from. And with parents across the country still concerned about COVID-19, turning to the Great Outdoors for some entertainment and fresh air is a simple and safe activity. Here are a few fun ways to make the most of a warm day.
Not only is it fun to watch the soapy spheres floating on the breeze, but this activity is great for baby’s sensory development . Bubbles popping on skin is a new sensation that can help your little one get used to various textures. If baby is big enough, make a game of popping bubbles using different parts of the body (poking with fingers, stomping with feet, etc.)—this fun bonding activity exercises gross motor skills. “Bubbles” is a pretty easy word for early talkers to say, so don’t be surprised if your kiddo starts calling for bubbles on the regular.
Wear baby in a sling or carrier and go for a walk in the woods, local park or wherever you can interact with nature. Point out all the different sights (colorful flowers, fuzzy moss on the trees) and sounds (birds chirping, brook babbling) as you talk to baby about what you’re seeing and hearing. Let baby reach out and touch safe items like leaves, petals and blades of grass. Simply being outside is a wonderful way to engage baby’s senses without overstimulating them.
If baby is sitting up, they’ll love rolling a ball back and forth with you on the grass. Bring a bunch of balls in different colors and sizes and get ready for some giggles. Make it a real afternoon outing and pack a picnic!
Grab a blanket, sun umbrella and your portable speakers (or just your phone) and head to a local park or your backyard to dance with baby to your favorite tunes. Babies love being bounced and twirled around in your arms and listening to familiar songs.
Most little kids get a huge kick out of splashing around in water, so as long as you’re closely supervising, water play can be one of the best outdoor activities for babies. Head to the beach or community pool (if it’s open), find a local playground with sprinklers or even step out into your backyard to enjoy a baby pool or sensory water bin —simply fill a plastic tray with a couple inches of water and add a few plastic toys, and let baby splash and play to their heart’s content.
Okay, so maybe baby’s about a tenth of the size of the thing—but still, flying a kite can be a fun family activity. Pack a picnic, spread out a blanket, plop baby down (don’t forget the sunscreen ) and let that kite take to the skies. Baby will love watching the colorful fabric dancing in the air as you and your partner help maneuver it together.
Many local farms will let you come in and pick your own fruits and veggies (strawberries and blueberries are perfect spring and summer treats) and usually at market price. This is a great way to show baby where our food comes from, and they’ll love eating their own pickings.
No list of outdoor activities for babies would be complete without a mention of the playground swings! Some playgrounds across the country are closed due to COVID-19, but others are open, depending on where you live. Once your little one can sit up and has good head and neck control, scope out a playground with baby swings, plop them in one and start pushing! The swinging sensation is sure to bring on big smiles. (Just toss some hand sanitizer in your diaper bag.)
Grab a few toy instruments and duck outside for a fun music-making activity. Maracas, tambourines, pianos and drums all make for excellent baby-friendly instruments, but you don’t need special tools to jam out—pots, pans, metal bowls and wooden spoons are also baby-safe and make plenty of entertaining noise.
Spread out a blanket under a shady tree and crack open a few of baby’s favorite books. There’s nothing like reading a story outside with the breeze in your hair. Try looking for books that take place in nature, so you can point out the trees and grass in the story as well as around you.
