Snapchat’s new baby filter is a potential breeding ground for disturbing images of fake child abuse, concerned users fear.
The filter transforms faces into much younger versions, with rosier cheeks and wider eyes.
It has become wildly popular on social media as people share how they’ve rolled back the years.
But for some, it has an alarming potential for paedophiles and perverts to use the technology to turn pornographic images into ‘deep fake’ child abuse.
Deep fake videos usually have celebrity faces mapped into real porn, but in this instance, a porn actor’s own face could be turned into a child version of itself.
In one disturbing clip being shared online, a 21-year-old man pretends to be a Snapchat cam boy to show how the technology could be used to attract paedophiles.
Beginning of dialog window. Escape will cancel and close the window.
Nicole Whittaker, a former counsellor for children’s charity NSPCC, said the clip, which was uploaded to the Surviving Life YouTube channel, shows how dangerous the technology can be.
She said it shocks her that a global platform like Snapchat is seemingly unaware of the possible implications.
‘I’m all for a laugh, all for funny filters, but I draw the line at something like this,’ she told metro.co.uk.
‘I’m worried paedophiles will use it to imitate child porn. It’s so dangerous and it’s so easily done.
‘Paedophiles know how to get around on the dark web, so they 100% know how to use this filter to create fake child porn or actual child porn.
‘The filter angered me more than anything else given the craziness that is out there.’
Nicole, who is studying forensic psychology, said parents need to stay vigilant if their children are using Snapchat.
She added: ‘No parent can watch their children 24/7, and teens deserve their privacy, but there has to be a balance there.
‘People honestly have no idea of the dangers out there.
‘It’s not the stereotypical male paedophiles now, there are female paedophiles, paedophile families and there are even children going on cam for Bitcoin. It’s a very scary time.’
Snapchat told metro.co.uk that the safety of its users is a ‘top priority’ and sexually suggestive content involving minors is ‘expressly prohibited’.
There are in-app reporting tools which allows Snapchat to make an immediate copy of offending content so it can be investigated with evidence.
All images of sexual abuse are reported to police, including the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP) in the UK, a Snapchat spokesperson confirmed.
A technology called PhotoDNA is also used to help the platform detect and report images of child abuse.
In a statement, a Snap spokesperson: ‘We regularly experiment with new technologies and features as part of our mission to empower self-expression.
‘We evolve these based on feedback from our community and we continue to take a strong stance on abusive behaviour on our platform.
‘The Lens carousel is dynamic for every user, continuously changing based on Lens relevancy, engagement, recency, and more. Given that this Lens launched mid last week, the majority of Snapchatters do not currently see this Lens in their carousel.’
Snapchat said it recommends users do not change the default ‘Friends Only’ settings and keep their privacy settings restricted.
You can also stay safe by not sharing your username publicly and not adding people you do not know.
