Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney portray college freshmen, but how old are the actresses in real life?
The Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble-led series The Sex Lives of College Girls follows Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney as they navigate their freshman year at the prestigious Essex College in Vermont. The four suitemates go through the highs and lows of college life together, as they try to figure out their place on campus and discover who they are.
As college freshmen, Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney are around 18 years old. But IRL, how old are the actresses who portray them? What about the upperclassmen and friends that they meet in their first trimester at Essex, such as Leighton’s brother Nico and Kimberly’s Sips coworker Lila? The answers might surprise you. As you stream season 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls (which debuted on HBO Max on November 17!) , here’s everything you need to know about the cast’s real ages.
She portrays 18-year-old Kimberly Finkle, but Pauline Chalamet is the oldest of the quad squad. Born January 25, 1992, she is 30 years old.
Alyah Chanelle Scott, who plays soccer star Whitney Chase, is a bit closer to her character’s age. She turned 25 years old in July.
At 29 years old, Amrit Kaur is the second-oldest out of the Essex College suitemates. That makes her about 11 years older than her character, Bela Malhotra.
At 22 years old, Reneé Rapp is closer in age to a college senior than a college freshman. But that means she’s only about four years older than her character, Leighton Murray, and is the youngest of the group.
Ilia Isorelýs Paulino plays fan-favorite character Lila, a student at Essex and Kimberly’s hilariously witty coworker at Sips Café. In real life, Ilia’s 27 years old, so she’s a little less than 10 years older than her Sex Lives of College Girls character.
Canaan, portrayed by Christopher Meyer, is also an Essex student and Kimberly’s other Sips coworker. He’s also Whitney’s love interest throughout season 1 and into season 2. IRL, Christopher is 28 years old.
Mekki Leeper plays Eric, editor of Essex’s prestigious comedy group, The Catullan. Eric is likely between ages 18 and 20, which would mean Mekki is about eight or nine years older than his character.
Mitchell Slaggert portrays Jackson, a newcomer and transfer student at Essex College in season 2 of The Sex Live of College Girls . Considering he’s in the same dorm building as Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney, it’s assumed that he’s also a freshman. In this case, at age 28, Mitchell is about a decade older than Jackson.
Lauren “Lolo” Spencer plays Jocelyn, an Essex College freshman who lives in Kimberly, Bela, Whitney, and Leighton’s dorm building. In a 2019 interview with CNN , the actress opened up about her ALS diagnosis at age 14 and how she’s lived with the disease for 18 years. According to the article at the time of publication, Lauren was in her early 30s, which would mean she’s likely in her mid-30s now.
Gavin Leatherwood, aka Nico, departed The Sex Lives of College Girls after season 1, but as Kimberly’s love interest, he certainly left an impression. It’s revealed in episode 1 of season 2 that his character is 21 years old, but in real life, Gavin is 28.
Alicia is Leighton’s girlfriend in season 1 of the HBO Max series, but they keep their relationship a secret since Leighton is still closeted. She’s also a student at Essex, but is 28 years old in real life.

The wait for The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 2 is finally over with the new series dropping two episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.
For the show's second outing, the majority of the main cast has returned, including Pauline Chalamet as Kimberly, Amrit Kaur as Bela, Reneé Rapp as Leighton, Alyah Chanelle Scott as Whitney, Christopher Meyer as Canaan, Midori Francis as Alicia and Mekki Leeper as Eric.
Up-and-coming American actor and Calvin Klein model Mitchell Slaggert has joined the cast as Jackson, a transfer student, and athlete, with a partying background.
Kimberly, Bela, Leighton and Whitney will continue to live their best and at times, chaotic, lives during their freshman year at Essex College. Once again, fans can expect to see a whole load of drama, laughs, romance, sex, heartbreak, scandal and more.
Sadly, Gavin Leatherwood is noticeably absent from the new series, much to fans' disappointment. Newsweek has everything you need to know about why.
Nico Murray has officially left Essex College, and sadly Gavin Leatherwood isn't reprising the role. He was one of the much-loved heartthrobs from Season 1.
His absence may come as a pretty big shock to fans, but Leatherwood did announce the news about his departure earlier this year.
Speaking to US Weekly at the Mercedes-Benz Oscar 2022 Viewing Party in March, Leatherwood explained he had left the series to pursue other opportunities.
He said: "There is a season 2, but I'm not going to go back."
Leatherwood added he was "happy to do the first season," but he was now "branching off and going in a different direction."
He reflected: "It was such an incredible experience. I think Mindy is brilliant and the cast, everyone's lovely.
"But with so many amazing opportunities out there, we want to keep spreading our wings and leading ourselves to other projects so that's the move."
Leatherwood continued: "I think life is short and I think one of the best things about this craft and this industry is that you get to keep stretching into your uncomfortable zone.
"That's when we grow and learn and become stronger artists. So that's kind of what I am looking to do is just to continue to get uncomfortable and learn and grow and hone my craft."
Leatherwood starred in nine of the 10 episodes in the first season of The Sex Lives of College Girls as Kimberly's (Pauline Chalmet) tutor and love interest.
The two embarked on a secret relationship due to Nico's status as her teacher and the fact, he was her roommate's brother.
However, in the finale of The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 1, a huge twist revealed Nico actually had a serious, long-term girlfriend, leaving Kimberly devastated.
Since announcing he was leaving the series in March, Leatherwood has released the single "Be My Lover" and a debut EP.
At the moment, it's not known what acting roles Leatherwood is keen to pursue next, but in the meantime, you can watch him in Season 1 of The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 1, which is streaming on HBO Max now, and as Nicholas Scratch in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix .

The Sex Lives of College Girls picks up just as our four favorite Essex College suitemates return from Thanksgiving break for another season of collegiate fun, heartbreak, and final exams — sometimes all within the span of 15 minutes.
In the first four episodes of The Sex Lives of College Girls that were provided to critics, we're thrust back into action with our goal-oriented and determined freshwomen: Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), and Leighton (Reneé Rapp). This season, the women are dead set on conquering Essex in their own respective ways during their winter semester.
As Kimberly grapples with the loss of her academic scholarship and weighs her money-making options, Whitney juggles the convoluted relationship with her casual hook-up turned something more and the beginnings of an identity crisis since the end of her turbulent soccer season. On the opposite side of the suite, roommates Leighton and Bela experience no shortage of a busy schedule as Bela’s all-female comedy magazine faces its first ever public launch and Leighton grapples with her identity as an openly queer socialite approaching her sorority's rush week. It may seem like the first four episodes are jam-packed, but the pacing feels true to life for this college student!
The first season of TSLOCG , which was co-created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, firmly established this foursome as interesting, fully fleshed-out characters. I absolutely must give all of the writers their flowers for keeping their evolving bond a big part of the A story instead of shuffling it off to the B or C story in favor of romances with some very average men. Don’t get me wrong; their titular sex lives — from hook-ups and slow burns to a shirtless frat boy strip tease — are far from lacking in season 2, and thank goodness for that. But these romps take a backseat to the budding and arguably more interesting connections between these four girls with absolutely nothing in common other than a shared space.
As they all haphazardly navigate their way through classes, extracurriculars, medical procedures, and sex-related infections, they continue to have each other's backs, lightening the load of what can be a very overwhelming transition from high school to independent adulthood. The Sex Lives of College Girls is intentional in the way it portrays lighthearted but realistic depictions of the diverse relationships between women. This is an intent worth appreciating considering the controversial and limiting representations of female identities throughout television history. (I love Sex and the City and Girlfriends too, but we all know it!)
There is also something to be said about the show's nods to modern feminism, both through the writing and its direction. A major visual theme in the series is the reversal of the male gaze, whether that be through the girls' navigation of hook-up culture, responses to the differing — and sometimes problematic — forms of male sexual prowess, or even Magic Mike sequences of muscular dry-humping pageantry.
Oftentimes, in combating an institution as overwhelming as the patriarchy, the characters engage in reinforcing patriarchal beliefs and habits that set them back a couple of steps. There is opportunity for the series to leverage better modes of feminist ideology, but for now, it's still being utilized as the show's "buzzword" that sort of breaks the fourth wall instead of displaying a firm grasp on its ethics within the plot.

For example, Bela quits comedy magazine The Catullan — a wink at The Harvard Lampoon , which is historically packed with white cis men, including some of Kaling's colleagues from The Office — and launches a female-led rival, yet she's guilty of diminishing other women when she jokes that women aren't funny. Leighton also has a hand in reproducing harmful hook-up culture behavior by failing to keep her sexual partners updated about her recent STI diagnoses, instead choosing to ghost and gaslight as bad as any dude.
But these characters are supposed to be complex, imperfect, and a little self-absorbed; they are still teenagers, after all. The beauty in this show is that the girls aren't scolded or antagonized for making mistakes as they mature in a male-dominated society; it shouldn't be their job to deconstruct the systems that hurt them, and they're still doing a pretty damn good job for a couple of freshmen. They screw up, they learn, and they pick up the pieces for the next inciting incident. Sometimes we fail tests we’ve studied for for 48 hours straight and make a beeline to the nearest frat party for a night of excitement and mistakes we (hopefully) won’t remember in the morning. The writers capture the unique and chaotic essence of the undergraduate experience in this first half of the comedy-drama sophomore season, and it gives me all of the feels.
Here's my season 2 crash course: Yes, Kimberly is still as naive as a fawn. Whitney should probably stay single; her love life is giving me whiplash. Leighton enters her fuckboy era, and I'm praying she leaves soon. And of course, no, Bela has not become kin to wearing clothes her own size, or clothes at all, for that matter. As the final episodes of the upcoming season rolls out, the girls better pray for some considerable character development to ease their rocky situationships and hard-ass professors. It looks like there’s no stopping the momentum anytime soon for our college pals.
