SLOVAR ░ СЛОВАРЬ

Словарь is dictionary. This collection of words forms Kolxoz lexicon. Slovar includes terms and phenomenons that are encountered, which are formulated and developed by Kolxoz. This is the definition of important points in the existence of collective. It gives an idea about situations that Kolxoz creates or situations in which Kolxoz finds itselves. These words describe aspects relevant to the regions in which members of the collective meet, work and live.

Like any vocabulary, Slovar is a form of communication between «you» and «others». It is an opportunity to make platform for explanation, grounding and interaction. Slovar is a manifestation of an alternative to repressive logic of ready–made systems. Such systems which reduce us to the comfortable automatism of language consumers. Resistance through DIY–lexicon open space between the autonomous perception of the surrounding reality and the utopian way of thinking.

You can start reading Slovar on any page. If you find a underlined word, you can see an explanatory section for such word in the Slovar. For easier orientation between terms, you can look in index section at end of this lexicon. Slovar is accompanied by Kolxoz photographs, illustrations and diagrams.

SBORNÍK NEKROLOGŮ, Kolxoz

Death of the Ego, Birth of the Collectivity

ЧТО? ГДЕ? КОГДА? ПОЧЕМУ?

WHAT
Self–published ribbon «lenta» of paper with topic of Necrologue. This publication was created as a symbolic space for collaborative work of different people. Authors separated by closed borders, distance and circumstances. Still they formed a collective, once together inside Samizdat. No selection was done. Everyone who found motivation to participate had an equal chance to publish.

WHERE
In Kishinev, capital of Hope and Unhope. A place that has the capacity of Paradise. But usually you need to pass through Hell to get into this Paradise. Sborník has been prepared and printed on a fax machine which stands under a paper sign «FAX» on the fishing table in the corner of «3 RD Space Studio» in a deserted building of Muzeul that never was Museum.

WHEN
It was Autumn, 2020. Days were getting shorter and shorter. In the air was thin atmosphere of the end with a taste of something untouchable. Yellow light, hot tea, warm air ventilator, empty museum with stuck toilet. Glue and knife as production weapons. Music from «kolonka» silently fills empty corridors and covers all like soft vata.

WHY
Form of the Necrologue is used to reflect the existence of all involved. Out of the imaginary death of individuals was born this publication. Authors were investing 30 minutes of their time to work and explore the effectiveness of such psycho hygiene tactics. The thin stripe of office paper was all what the collective had. It was a peripheral meeting. It was a platform. All around, «potential of limits». Rather than a perfect publication product, Kolxoz presents a method of work on the particular subject. Kolxoz is looking for collective expression in self–publishing work «samizdat» and ways to distribute outcomes touching cultural phenomenons.

IT’LL BE WHITE OR BLACK, GREY AT THE MOST

The song “It’ll be white or black, grey at the most”, followed a read manifesto made from fragments of conversations between architects and clients. The lyrics were composed from excerpts of emails, friends’ stories, or dialogues from studios. The song was originally made for the Ta Architektura presentation, organized in March 2015 at the Prague Trade Fair Palace by the Kruh association. Kapitán Jedůvka composed the music and also accompanied the recital with his beatbox stylings. In 2017, a music video for this song was made for the “Dear Architects…” exhibition in Architecture Gallery Brno.

25 FORGOTTEN BUILDINGS

Gottfried Müller's;
«Melancholy and Adventure of Construction, 25 Forgotten Buildings»
published by Cosa.

A Czech–German publication of 25 architectural adventure stories – portraits of forgotten houses, written by German visual artist Gottfried Müller. Stories tell about troubles of building process, strangeness of builders and the whims of investors.

Quarreled families invent ingenious ways to avoid one another another in shared areas, a dynasty of dwarves become rich due to ship equipment trade, sadomasochistic sisters run a discreet Home for the blind, a man lives in harmony with animals and plants, the throne of Charles IV is found in a pillar of a bridge, a passionate hunter holds saturnalian feasts in a golden–black–silver hall without windows. What does the most absurd roof truss north of the Alps look like?

An uncompromising architect designs waste pipes of square cross–section, experts discover the highest floor of an unknown tower, a radical investor rejects 118 architectural proposals making enemies of all local institutions and surviving two duels.

A winner of the battle „Man Against the Machine“ trains for his comeback, a baroness lives in the middle of an industrial zone in a castle from 12th century, a man writes a thick undecodable manuscript, a railway employee plays on wires drawn to railway switches, a hermit suffers from his gambling tendencies, a deadly house comes to life once every 11 years, a husband rebuilds his semi–detached house.

A concrete clod might be communicating with an extraterrestrial world, a one–legged man lives with his cattle in vaults of a large ramp, rebellious and violent inhabitants dwell in the Hussite war wagons. What stands at the place where Hannibal mourned for his frozen crocodile?

A family have been hiding themselves for all their lives behind a gate, a gay clergyman constructs a vibration chamber and a large centrifuge, a son of a builder constructs his building the other way around, and an observatory provides a view of the Moon only twice a year.

LEGEND OF PREFABRICATED HOUSING ESTATE ~ LOS

This book describes a journey undertaken round Prague’s prefab housing estates to examine their current state. Our journey became an expedition. Our initial experiences encouraged us to delve deeper. To obtain direct experience we turned to personalities living in the estates, and to authorities on the subject, who are in some way connected to the topic. We chose experts reflecting themes associated with mass public housing construction, promoting the quality of this housing or those who live in these housing complexes. Longtime residents describe their personal stories on obtaining housing, migration and transformation of the settlements over time.

We conducted interviews with architects involved in the construction of Pragues housing estates. Architect Jiří Lasovský talks about the origins of Southern City (Jižní Město), Vítězslava Rothbauerová was involved in the formation of Southern City II (Jižní Město II), and Ivo Oberstein talks about the emergence of Southewstern City (Jihozápadní Město). The names emphasize the size of these projects. Our guest architect is Bronisław Firla from Horní Suchá, who speaks about the construction and city development in the Ostrava region in the second half of 20th century.

Views of architects are supported by an interview with a theorist of architecture, Radomíra Sedláková, and with the historian and theorist of architecture, Rostislav Švácha. Other contributers include the philosopher Erazim Kohák, geologist and writer Václav Cílek and urban geographer and anthropologist Petr Gibas. In terms of the realization of art in public space we have the thoughts of sculptor Jan Kryštůfek and about a daily life in a block of flats we talked to painter Jan Jüngling. Carpenter and enthusiast for housing estates Marian Lipták talks on selected types of panel systems. Miluše Rothová discusses life in a tenant building from an elderly perspective, whilst childhood memories of growing up in the blocks are shared by Vít Podráský and Miroslav Pazdera.

Pragues housing estates are now a quality place to live. Housing developments have been enhanced by green public spaces. Planned metro stations were completed and amenities have been continually upgraded. The original complaints on poor living conditions are being rectified. Their original purpose was to provide affordable housing for people whose prospects otherwise would be a room in a flat shared with their parents. After the Velvet Revolution this type of construction was marginalized and identified with the former regime. Society considered the demolition of this type of prefabricated housing project and promoted the densification of these areas. Fortunately, there was not enough funding for this to be carried out.

Today, as housing becomes an unaffordable luxury again, people have to choose between either a life of debt with a large mortgage or paying high rental costs. A cohesive housing policy currently does not exist and an apathetic political system is unwilling to support the construction of affordable housing. How to deal with this situation is up to us.
