BOM QLD: Catastrophic Flooding Expected as Tropical Cyclone Approaches

Queensland faces a tense weather day as Tropical Cyclone approaches the coast, bringing with it forecasts of catastrophic flooding across large parts of the state. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that torrential rains, damaging winds, and rising rivers could overwhelm communities that have already endured days of wet weather.

Forecasters say widespread totals of 200 to 350 millimeters are likely in many areas within 24 hours, with the potential for higher amounts in banded rainfall zones. The combination of heavy rain and saturated ground raises the risk of flash floods and record river levels, especially in lower-lying towns and along major catchments. Coastal communities may also experience storm surge and gale-force winds near the cyclone’s outer bands.

Emergency services have opened evacuation centers and urged residents in flood-prone regions to prepare for rapid changes in conditions. Local authorities say roads may quickly become treacherous, with some closures possible as waters rise. Residents near creeks and rivers are advised to monitor alerts and move to higher ground if flooding threatens.

Officials said the cyclone’s track is still shifting, but models indicate landfall could occur late today or tonight, with effects felt well inland in the following hours. The public is encouraged to stay indoors during the strongest winds and follow updates from the BOM and local councils as the situation evolves.
