In "Azumi," a team of 5 children are trained by a samurai to assassinate what he and a priest/tactician see as threats to peace in Japan - 3 warlords of varying temperament. In the first film, the basic framework is laid out around the attempts on two of the warlords. "Azumi 2" is the story of the surviving team members and their mission to assassinate the 3rd target. But also like the last film, there's more to it than that. The film explores the motivations behind why Azumi and Nogara continue the mission, and they learn of the impact of their actions. The missions, after all, are to eliminate war in Japan, to stop all the killing. Yet on their missions, the assassins have killed hundreds of men and continuing will mean who knows how many more deaths - as an orphaned girl asks "How is this different? How is this better?" The question that continues to plague Azumi is existential - she was raised and trained to complete the mission; it's not what she does, but who she is. Without it, who is she? What will she do? So, as a philosphical meditation on war, peace, and identity, how's it do? I can't say - the VOD versions are dubbed and you seem to lose a lot in the translation. Discussions end abruptly, arguments seem to bounce around. Big fail in that area. As an action film, it's also lukewarm. The first film is framed around the introduction of the characters and two missions, which means a lot of action. This one has more exposition and less action, since we already know the characters and there's only one warlord left to get. The battles are spread out, often sidetracked by subplots, and the final battle is somewhat anti-climactic. Overall, my 3 star rating is 2 stars for the film, 1 star simply for closing off the story of the first. As a stand-alone film, I'd be a lot less pleased with "Azumi 2."

This sequel lives up to the high standard set by Azumi 1. When it comes to sequels, especially when there is much left to tell in a story, there is understandably apprehension as to the quality of the sequel and if it lives up to the original. Azumi 2 does. Azumi 2 is an excellent movie that tells an emotional story. This is no superficial action flick. Themes of love, betrayal and sacrifice are present in a deep and genuine way. The writer of the story and the director of this movie approach violent conflict in a responsible way, showing it for what it is, perilous, brutal, violent, glorious and always resulting in loss now matter how noble and how essential the end. While Azumi 1 + 2 show the harsh realities of war and violent conflict they do not turn a cold shoulder to it in some kind of pretentious hollywood/liberal style but recognizes that sometimes armed conflict is a duty, an obligation, glorious and essential if peace is to be preserved and lives saved. The action sequences in Azumi 2 are just as good as Azumi 1 and the realism I liked so much in the action scenes in Azumi 1 was not compromised and the action also remained realistically and graphically violent. Azumi 2 is an excellent, incredible movie with a good and emotionally compelling story. No cardboard characters and thrown together plot here like in so many other martial arts types movies. Azumi 2, like Azumi 1, is as much an excellent drama as it is an excellent violent action movie. An incredible, emotionally compelling piece of drama and as good a sword-fighting movie as you could ask for. I highly, highly recommend this movie!

What everyone says: good movie, good swording, plods at times. If you like ancient sword movies this is definitely one to watch. I'm sad they didn't make a third one.

then you'd probably enjoy the sequel. Well done, story takes a different turn here, while remaining true to the need to complete the mission. We watch and see how Azumi learns more about life, while staying true to her mission. She is a tragic heroine. I wish there were more Azumi to follow! I enjoyed these two films alot.

While well made and acted, this had the feel of being too episodic and predicatble. As the story progressed nothing that happened surprised me or even particularly interested me. See the first one -- Azumi -- which is worth the effort and closes with a bang well worth staying around for...

Violent as the first film, conclusion of predictive programming for a dystopian past i.e. future. Morality tale with no white hats, all are bad.

You have to watch the first one first, maybe should have named this "Chapter 2"...
