This question was much too long to run in its entirety.
It’s from a mother and her 8-year-old son who is working on a report for school on the Arizona state seal.
They want to know why the state motto on the state seal is in Latin and not in Spanish or English or both. They really seem bothered by this.
I don’t know if I should be doing this kid’s homework for him, but it is a pretty good question.
As you know, our motto is Ditat Deus — God enriches.
The state seal has changed a few times over the years but Ditat Deus has been the motto since 1863 when Arizona was a territory. It was coined by Richard Cunningham McCormick, a publisher and politician who served as the first secretary of the Arizona territory and its second governor.
It’s in Latin because back in the 19th century that language was much more widely taught and used than it is today. It probably goes back to the days when kings and queens and other big shots had coats of arms with the family motto in Latin.
The Latin in my family’s coat of arms is somewhat unwieldy, but basically it means, “The check is in the mail. Really. No kidding.”
It has been suggested that Ditat Deus came from Genesis 14:23, in which the patriarch Abram turns down on offer of help from the king of Sodom and says he will make do with God’s blessings.
Arizona is one of four states with a motto that makes a direct reference to God. The others are Florida, Ohio and South Dakota.
