During the article he sites reliable sources such as a Republican Representative from Florida who is the chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Jeff Miller, which goes provides credibility not only to the Department of Veterans Affairs side of the house but also to the political side as well. He also goes on to site the departments deputy secretary Sloan D. Gibson, only providing more credibility to the article as if to ensure the readers that no stone was left unturned. All of these agencies play a vital role in the health care and well-being of all of Americas vets and continue to fight for the rights of those vets. This Article, while relatively short in length, is jammed packed with credible sources relating to main topic. There have been in recent years, finding that the Department of Veterans Affairs has falsified documents in order to make them seem better off than they really are and he sites department calculations as a source which, with a recent history of misleading information, seems to be the only non-credible source that he references. The article is well organized and structured. The author starts you off with restating the title in a manner that would catch your attention and peak your interest, while simultaneously keeping the paragraph short and to the point so as not overwhelm you from the start. It describes exactly what to expect in the upcoming article. Because the title starts with the word Lawmakers, the author starts main body paragraphs with references and discussions from a political stand point and once you have a good feel for the topic from that point of reference he leads you into discussions from the department. He states that soaring demand for medical care from veterans has exceeded even the most aggressive predictions, in one paragraph pg. Later on he states Overall patient demand at the veterans agency has grown more than 10 percent in the past year and the only citation that he references is that this is according to department calculations. He goes on to provide the readers with numbers such as how many physicians and nurses were hired, how much clinical space was purchased, and how many veterans are affected by hepatitis C without providing the slightest inclination of how those numbers were attained. While almost all of the cited references are credible, none of the credible references are stated as providing the author with the information that he stated thus, making those provided numbers an illogical reference. As you would expect with any political article, this one lacked the emotional connection that you might see in an article written for those stay at home mothers and fathers. There were a few spots that did spark an emotional connection yet, I am unsure if it is because I am a veteran or if the author intended for everyone to feel the same. He speaks about how long wait times are just to get an appointment within the departments hospitals or clinics and states the number of patients on waiting lists of a month or longer is now 50 percent higher than a year ago pg. Again, this has no source of reference but I myself have and still am on those types of waitlist so the anger and frustration felt was overwhelming while reading this. On the other hand, the author goes on to write that the VA has hired a substantial amount of vital personnel in an attempt to bring down those numbers, thus, bringing the frustration and anger down to a cautious optimism that wait times may be starting to lower over time. These types of emotions, I believe, are intended to capture the raw emotions of the reader without directly enticing those emotions. The author did a swell job of indirectly bringing emotions out while keeping within the norm of a political article. This piece has some interesting looks into the political monster that is called Congress and how it plays a vital role in the implementation of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Author did an outstanding job finding sources that are credible but did not do so well with backing up the facts that he was presenting. An emotional roller coaster was not what you received in this article but that is to be expected when dealing with politics. Overall I would give the author a B- for the hard work he presented.
