Awesome OSM Tips & Tricks

Erwin

Welcome to OpenStreetMap! We usually refer to to it as just OSM (like you say "awesome") .

You're probably reading this because somebody (me?) noticed your recent contributions to OpenStreetMap, and may have left you a comment or response in an OSM changeset.

As you may already discovered, OSM is an open platform for helping co-create better maps of your favorite places and neighborhoods. You can add a lot of data, from simple features like business establishments and point of interests, to complex ones like restrictions to improve routing and navigation, or unusual information, like fire hydrants, power lines, or even trash bins that are not likely to be found in other maps.

Here are few tips to get you off running to a quick start:

  • Very detailed information about anything OpenStreetMap are (mostly) in the wiki pages. And the Beginner's Guide will get you off and running quickly.
  • LearnOSM is a great resource, for self-paced learning modules. Available instructions include those for the user-friendly, browser-based,editor - iD editor, and other types of editors for more experienced or users with particular requirements like the powerful JOSM editor, or knowing more about mobile mapping tools.
  • If you're a casual editor, or prefer to contribute from a mobile device, there are several popular apps that are easy and fun to use: EveryDoor , StreetComplete, and the thematic editor MapComplete.
  • Are you looking for something to map in the Philippines? Check out available challenges from MapRoulette or HOT's Tasking Manager projects, and find something suitable to your interest and skill level.
  • Got question or wish to to interact with local communities in the Philippines? There are several community channels you can check out, join or follow to keep track of events or activities.
