The creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender explain how they wanted to get Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson to voice a fan-favorite recurring role.
Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have revealed that they tried to get Dwayne Johnson to voice a character in the beloved Nickelodeon series.
A 2006 episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender , titled "The Blind Bandit," sees the episode's namesake Toph Beifong (Jessie Flower) facing off against a professional wrestler called The Boulder in an earthbending competition. While the character ended up being voiced by real-life wrestler Mick Foley, DiMartino and Konietzko originally wanted The Boulder to be played by none other than The Rock himself. "This was before he was like the Rock as we know him now, but he was definitely on that trajectory, and since [the Boulder] was modeled after him, we tried to get him to be the voice," DiMartino explained in a recent episode of the official Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast. As entertaining as it would have been to see Johnson change the hierarchy of power in the Avatar universe, this did not come to pass as the Rock was apparently "not doing television at the time" of the episode's production. "That's what his agents told us," Konietzko added.
DiMartino continued, "But we got the, also from that era, Mick Foley, who wrestled with the Rock many times, who was also awesome and channeled... it was like a Mick Foley-Rock mashup," he said about Foley, who is friends with Johnson. "Yeah it was like [Foley was] doing an impression of his buddy, you know? It was funny," Konietzko said.
Although Johnson did not end up voicing The Boulder in the animated series, there is still hope that he could appear in Netflix's upcoming live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender . The series, which wrapped production of its first season in June, will feature a mostly new cast, leaving room for The Rock to finally fulfill DiMartino and Konietzko 's original conception of The Boulder. However, this may not be likely, as the two producers left the Netflix project in 2020 over creative differences. "Whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make," DiMartino wrote in a social media post at the time.
The first season of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender is expected to be different from the source material in several key ways, including in its tone. "Let's be frank: the first season of the animated series was geared toward little kids, but as the books went on, the themes became way more mature," Paul Sun-Hyung Lee , who will play Uncle Iroh in the Netflix series, said recently. "And you still have that whimsical quality, but the themes were so much deeper and the character arcs were so much more mature. That quality is what they're trying to bring into the first season."
Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender does not yet have a premiere date at this time.
