If you have installed Windows 11 on your PC, you may also run into some issues regarding Windows Defender, for example, you’ll need a new app to open this Windowsdefender link . Besides, you can encounter another issue – automatic sample submission turns off. This is the topic that we focus on in this post.
This issue has been reported by some users on Reddit and the following is one example:
Automatic sample submission turns off automatically after every startup. To protect your PC, you need to re-enable the setting after every boot, which is annoying. Well then, how can fix this issue in Windows 11? Get solutions from the following part now.
Microsoft releases an update at the beginning of August 2021 to fix this bug and you should install the Cumulative Update KB5004300 for Windows 11 (10.0.22000.100).
Step 1: Press Win + I to open Windows 11 Settings. Then, click Windows Update from the left sidebar.
Alternatively, you can click Win + R to get the Run dialog, type ms-settings:windowsupdate and click OK to open Windows Update.
Step 2: Click Check for updates . If Windows finds some available updates including KB5004300 , it will download and install them.
Step 3: You will be asked to restart the PC to install this update.
If you don’t want to install the Windows 11 update, you can try other ways to fix your issue.
You can create a Spynet Registry key if automatic sample submission turns off after every startup. This is to keep the functionality of this component of Windows Defender enabled in between restarts.
Step 1: Type regedit into the search box and click the result to open Registry Editor.
Step 2: Go to this path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender .
Step 3: Right-click Windows Defender and choose New > Key .
Step 4: Rename the new key to SpyNet .
Step 5: Go to the SpyNet folder, right-click a space and go to New DWORD (32-bit) Value . Name the new key as DisableBlockAtFirstSeen .
Step 6: Double-click it, set Base to Hexadecimal and the value data to 0 .
Step 7: Also, create a key called SpynetReporting and SubmitSamplesConsent . Then, set Base to Hexadecimal and the value data to 1 for these two keys.
Step 8: Restart your PC and see if your issue is solved.
Group Policy Editor is not available for Windows 11 Home and you can try this tool in Pro or an advanced edition.

Step 1: Press Win + R , type gpedit.msc and click OK .
Step 2: Go to Computer Configuration >Administrative Templates >Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus >MAPS .
Step 3: Go to the right section and find Send file samples when further analysis is required .
Step 4: Double-click it and select Enabled .
Step 5: Save the change and restart the PC.

Automatic Sample Submission is a feature in Microsoft Defender that allows the antivirus to send a copy of suspicious files to the developer for further investigation. The feature is usually enabled on most Windows 11 or Windows 10 computers, but for some reason, users have reported that it’s turned off and then are seeing the following message:
Automatic sample submission is off, Your device may be vulnerable
If the Automatic Sample Submission is off in Windows Defender, you should first update your system . If updating is to no avail, try the following solutions.
Your Automatic Sample Submission is disabled, let us first try to enable it in a regular way. What you have to do is search out the “Windows Security” app from the Start Menu. Now, go to Virus & threat protection > Manage settings. Then, enable Automatic Sample Submission by its toggle. This was an easy method, but for most users, the feature automatically gets disabled even after enabling it, for them, we have two other methods.
Maybe there is something wrong with a policy as a result of which the samples aren’t submitted. Try the following steps to configure a policy and see if it works.
Now, open your system and see if the issue persists.
If you don’t have Group Policy Editor on your computer, you can make the adjustments in the registries. We are going to configure a few of them to fix the issue. But first of all open Registry Editor by searching it out from the Start Menu. Now, navigate to the following location.
Once you have reached the location, right-click on the Windows Defender folder and select New > Key. Name the newly created key “SpyNet”. Click on SpyNet to enter the folder.
Now, right-click on the empty space, click New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it “ DisableBlockAtFirstSeen “.
Double-click on DisableBlockAtFirstSeen, set Base to Hexadecimal, and Value Data to 0 .
Also, create keys named “ SpynetReporting ” and “ SubmitSamplesConsent ” and set their Value data to 1 . Restart your computer and check if the issue persists.
If you have created a restore point then this might be a great time to unleash it. This will roll back your system to a point when Automatic Sample Submission was working just fine. If you don’t have a restore point, skip this solution.
Search “Restore Point” from Start, and click on System Restore. Now, select a restore point and click Next. Finally, follow the on-screen instructions to carry out the process. Once you do that, a lot of your settings may also be dialed back a little, but you can always adjust them. But notably, your issue will be resolved.
Hopefully, now you can enable Automatic Sample Submission at any time.
Microsoft’s Windows Defender is a multilayer antivirus and tries to examine and test every single suspicious file thrown its way. If it thinks that a file is malicious, it will notify the users. But if it can’t determine whether the file is a virus or not, the sample will be sent to the Cloud-based protection, which will use its metadata for proper identification. In case, the Cloud-based protection also fails, a simple of that file is set to Microsoft using Automatic Sample Submission for further inspection. That’s why it is important to keep that feature on all the time.

Windows Defender is an antivirus developed by Microsoft Corporation. If you have a Windows 11/10 PC, you have got it pre-installed on it. It continuously scans your PC for all possible vulnerabilities and protects it from different types of threats , like viruses, malware, etc. Whenever it detects any vulnerabilities on a system , it takes action against it and notifies the user about it.
Like other antivirus software , there is an option in Windows Defender to submit the samples to Microsoft automatically. When Windows Defender finds a suspicious file, it uploads it to the Microsoft server for analysis if Automatic Sample Submission is enabled. It makes the protection better against attacks because the analysis of suspicious files helps Microsoft release new updates for Windows Defender. This feature uploads only the malicious executable and other program files.
Let’s see the steps to disable this setting.
1] Right-click on the Windows icon and select “ Settings .”
2] Click on “ Updates and Security .” This will open the Windows updates setting.
3] Now, click on the “ Windows Security ” option in the left panel. After that click “ Open Windows Security .”
4] A new window will open in which you have to select “ Virus and threat protection .”
5] In the “ Virus & threat protection settings ” section, click “ Manage settings .”
6] Scroll down to view “ Automatic sample submission ” section. It is ON by default. Turn it OFF. When you toggle the button, you will get a prompt message on the screen, click “ Yes .”
After turning the setting off, you will see a message on the screen, “ Automatic sample submission is off. Your device may be vulnerable .” You can ignore this message. If you want, you can submit the suspicious files to Microsoft manually by clicking “ Submit a sample manually .”
This is how you can disable the automatic submission of samples by Windows Defender.
