I enjoyed the first novel in this series, Aunty Lee’s Delights, but I thought Aunty Lee’s Deadly Specials was more entertaining and engrossing. I couldn’t put it down. The main characters are better developed and memorable in this second book. I thought the numerous strands of the plot were developed very well and tied together nicely. There was a lot going on and there were quite a few surprises. Aunty Lee and Nina are both sincere and interesting characters. I wish I could know both of them in real life. If you have never read the first book and find yourself contemplating this book, I don’t think it is necessary to read Aunty Lee’s Delights first. You should easily catch on to the main characters.

This bock comes right on the heels of the previous book Aunty Lee's Delights, And I ate it up, literally. Ovidia Yu paints a vivid picture of Singapore especially of its culinary aspect. Aunty Lee's Deadly Specials kept me turning the page to find out who done it and why. With the second book in this series I have come to appreciate and admire Aunty Lee and her antics. When her home catering is blamed for the death of a mother and son she must prove that that isn't true. Specifically it is the buah keluak which is a kind of black nut that looks a bit like a castanet. I've had that at a friends house every New Year's Eve and I've heard jokes about how it's possibly poisonous. However it did not look appetizing and when I tasted it I found nothing special about it even though the others were licking their lips and going for more at the buffet. This mystery which also delves into the world of organ transplantation is pure entertainment and a charming read. if you're planning to visit Singapore and haven't been there before by all means this will prepare you for the various culinary treats in the clean and green city state

There are a lot of great things about this book. Number one, it creates a wonderfully atmospheric setting in Singapore. That's the main draw for me, giving me snippets of the life I enjoyed while living in Singapore for 5 years. Aunty Lee and Commissioner Raja and Inspector Salim and Nina are great characters, very reminiscent and fond archetypes of the best of Singapore and the villains and peripheral characters archetypes of the foibles and darker side. I love the use of Singlish vocabulary and grammar. The only problem is that the plot meanders and doubles back and repeats itself. It would have benefited greatly from a good editor armed with a timeline. Nonetheless, for anyone homesick for Singapore, this series is a.real treat and I'm sure the plotting will improve as the series progresses and the author has more experience and opportunity.

I bought this and the first book together. Yes, the food lore is great. No, I'm not fond of the pidgin English/gossipy old lady stereotype. Yes, it's a stereotype because it really does exist. But no, as Asians we don't have to keep perpetuating this stuff any longer, because -- surprise, surprise -- our grandparents are dying off and their children, us Boomers, are well-educated doctors, lawyers, slick politicians, etc. etc. This is a forced mash-up of food and culture spoon-fed by the harmless-looking Little Old Lady Who's Really Smarter Than Everybody Else. Aunty Lee kept reminding me of Ricardo Montalban, who couldn't become a star in Hollywood until he dropped his perfect, unaccented English and started speaking like a Third World refugee. Buy a cookbook or a history, instead -- in fact, I'd definitely buy a cookbook authored by Ms. Yu. A murder mystery....nope.

These books are so charming, LOVE Aunty Lee, she is spunky and smart and helps the police solve local mysteries. Love the food descriptions and the local cast of colorful characters. Ms. Yu has another great series set in 1930's Singapore, The Betel Nut mysteries, with the young Su Lin a smart young woman who works at the local police station and helps the fellows solve mysteries, check those out as well, very charming.

MS You does a wonderful job of capturing the people and diverse culture of Singapore. Her characters in this mystery represent many of the cultures and DC lasses found in that society. Aunty Lee "s ability to read people while feeding them is a wonderful quality. The mystery itself is quite engage some and has many twists and turns

It was a good book but it made me hungry. I really enjoyed Auntie's antics. Very smart lady. The characters were interesting and most had a real sense of humor. I like that in a book. I still like to try some of the food.

Although I enjoyed the last book it dragged a lot in the last third, and it was the same way in this story. Definitely not a thriller or fast-paced, it's more of a Miss Marple style book, with slow, thoughtful steps (which is fine until you think it should be gathering steam for the big reveal). However, spending time with Aunty Lee is fun, especially if you like exotic locales. It's definitely got a ton of local flavor, and it's not for everyone. However, since I just ordered book three, it's addictive. A nice rainy day read.

A spicy thriller

Aunty Lee, a little old nonya cook, is Singapore’s Miss Marple. The book is full of vignettes of local life and references to Singapore’s nonya cuisine, which is one of the best in the world. The plot is well developed and convincing enough. A charming page turner and a must for anyone who is fond of Singapore life.

I lke Aunty Lee

I was irritated at first by the constant 'side comments about food or life', but actually they explain a lot of the action and help the plot along, as well as giving much information about life in Singapore. This is the first of this series that I have read, and I will be buying and reading more of them.

Good series of books very entertaining

I really enjoyed this, and will definitely read more titles in the series. It was not too gruesome, although I would have preferred that the innocent victims had't died. At least justice was clearly done

Few know more about what goes on in Singapore than Aunty Lee. When a scandal over illegal organ donation involving prominent citizens makes news, she already has a list of suspects. There's no time to snoop, though - Aunty Lee's Delights is catering a brunch for local socialites Henry and Mabel Sung at their opulent house.
Rumor has it that the Sung's fortune is in trouble, and Aunty Lee wonders if the gossip is true. But soon after arriving at the Sung's house, her curiosity turns to suspicion. Why is a storage house she discovers locked? What is the couple arguing about behind closed doors? Where is the guest of honor who never showed up?
Then, Mabel Sung and her son Leonard are found dead. The authorities blame it on Aunty Lee's special stewed chicken with buah keluak, a local black nut that can be poisonous if cooked improperly.
Aunty Lee has never carelessly prepared a dish. She's certain the deaths are murder - and that they're somehow linked to the organ donor scandal. To save her business and her reputation, she's got to prove it - and unmask a dangerous killer whose next victim may just be Aunty Lee.

After losing her husband, Rosie Lee could easily have become one of Singapore's "tai tai," an idle rich lady devoted to mah-jongg and luxury shopping. Instead she threw herself into building a culinary empire from her restaurant, Aunty Lee's Delights, where spicy Singaporean home cooking is graciously served to locals and tourists alike. But when a body is found in one of Singapore's beautiful tourist havens, and when one of her wealthy guests fails to show at a dinner party, Aunty Lee knows that the two are likely connected. The murder and disappearance throws together Aunty Lee's henpecked stepson Mark, his social-climbing wife Selina, a gay couple whose love is still illegal in Singapore, and an elderly Australian tourist couple whose visit-billed at first as a pleasure cruise-may mask a deeper purpose. Investigating the murder is rookie Police Commissioner Raja, who quickly discovers that the savvy and well-connected Aunty Lee can track down clues even better than local law enforcement. Wise, witty and unusually charming, Aunty Lee's Delights is a spicy mystery about love, friendship and home cooking in Singapore, where money flows freely and people of many religions and ethnicities co-exist peacefully, but where tensions lurk just below the surface, sometimes with deadly results.

A fun murder mystery and a solid 4 stars So without the recommendation of one of my good GR friends I would never have known about this book, so I am grateful to Martin for his apt intervention in bringing this to my attention. A fun murder mystery and a solid 4 stars So without the recommendation of one of my good GR friends I would never have known about this book, so I am grateful to Martin for his apt intervention in bringing this to my attention. I do love mystery or detective books, from Holmes to Morse, from Poirot to Barnaby, from Marple to Foyle, so this was an enjoyable interlude once I finally managed to get hold of the book. I suppose because this is a book set in Singapore, it is more geared to the southern hemisphere and American market, and not heard of in the UK or Europe. I therefore feel privileged to have had a chance to read this. It is what I suppose we would call a cosy mystery, as in it is comfortable, easy going, not brutal (well not too overtly brutal (maybe a little violence hinted at)), with little swearing. The sort of book you could recommend (or read) to one's mum. Right, so Rosie "Aunty" Lee widowed restauranteur is dropped into the middle of a mystery whilst hosting a meal and wine tasting. Aided inadvertently by Senior Staff Sergeant Salim, she sets out to investigate first a disappearance and then a double murder. With the aid of Nina her trusty housekeeper and kitchen assistant she puts herself in the "firing line" in her attempt to find the murderer. Through twists and turns, from "red herring" to wonderfully sounding Singapore meals, she fights for the truth and to bring the perpetrator to justice. I would like to read more about Aunty Lee and get to grips with some of the terminology and meals, that said it is difficult to get hold of these books (see first paragraph) and when you can they are stupidly expensive, so we shall have to see. However it was a fun book, well written and an easy but intricate mystery, well done Ovidia Yu.
