It's been over a month since adult actress August Ames committed suicide at 23 years-old. Now her widower, Kevin Moriarty, is taking legal action.
According to documents acquired by The Blast , Moriarty and Ames' estate filed a $5 million claim against the Ventura County Medical Examiner's office, claiming they "released confidential and private information regarding the death of Mercedes Grabowski (Ames' real name) to media outlets."
"The information released was not part of the documents associated with any medical reports or public documents but was instead salacious personal information including but not limited to method of death, the location of death, the existence of a written communication by Mercedes Grabowski and the contents of the written communication by Mercedes Grabowski," the claim read.
Ames reportedly took her life after being the victim from cyberbullying, both from fans and from other members of the adult film industry. According to The Blast , Moriarty claims the information of Ames' suicide being release to the public cause him emotional distress resulting in medical visits.
If Moriarty, Ames' estate and the county are unable to come to a financial agreement, a lawsuit will likely follow.
Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in Canda, Ames began her adult film career in 2013. She went on to appear in nearly 300 films, earning multiple AVN Award nominations and acquiring a large fanbase.
Ames was found hanging in a public park in Camarillo, California on Dec. 5, 2017. According to the suicide note found in her car, Ames was being bullied by male performers after she tweeted out that she would refuse to work with any male peformer who had also made gay pornography.
Multiple adult film stars have since come out in defense of Ames, most notobaly retired performer Jenna Jameson .
"Her blood is on their hands," Jameson said in an interview with The Blast.

THE grieving husband of tragic porn star August Ames has opened up about her tormented final moments - and revealed she killed herself just one day after receiving a torrent of sick online abuse.
In a harrowing blog post, heartbroken Kevin Moore told how his world "was instantly shattered" and revealed that life without her "is a cruel existence devoid of colour".
August - real name Mercedes Grabowski - was found dead in Camarillo, California, on December 5 from a suspected suicide just hours after she was bombarded with abuse online.
Distraught Kevin also revealed that he blames online bullies for his wife's death - and claimed the adult star saved the worst abuse for him to find.
He wrote: "She took screenshots of everything. All of the bullying. It is all there on her phone, including many of the tweets that have since been deleted. She left it for me to find.
"If you fire a gun into the air and that bullet randomly hits someone that you never intended to kill, you still killed them.
"I write this to make it crystal clear: Bullying took her life. If the harassment had not occurred, she would be alive today.
"She ended her life the day after the bullying began. To think they are unrelated is delusional.
"Her mother is a veteran who served her country with two tours in Afghanistan and now suffers from PTSD.
"She has now lost her daughter as well. Mercedes’ death has also put her mother in the hospital.
"Words fail me on how to express my appreciation for those who have defended Mercedes.
"To her friends and fans that continue to show their support, I deeply thank you.

August Ames (born Mercedes Grabowski ; 23 August 1994 – 5 December 2017) was a Canadian pornographic actress . She appeared in almost 290 movies, including a non-pornographic film in 2016, and was nominated for several AVN Awards . [2] [4] In 2017 at the age of 23, Ames committed suicide after a particular event of social media backlash following a tweet she posted.

Ames was born Mercedes Grabowski in Antigonish, Nova Scotia , on 23 August 1994. She grew up in Petawawa , Ontario , and later lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado . [5] She graduated from Oromocto High School . She was of Polish ancestry and was also one-quarter African-American. [6] Both her parents were in the army and she spent her early years as a military brat , [7] including a number of years living beside Canadian Forces Base Petawawa . [5]

Ames's mother suffered from bipolar disorder . [1] Ames alleged that she was routinely sexually molested by her paternal grandfather as a child, but her father refused to believe her and at 12 years old she was sent to live in a group home . [8] In her early years, she worked as a nanny , animal-assisted aide, and horseback trainer. [7]

Ames's career as a pornographic actress began at the age of 19, in November 2013. She performed in over 270 films, [1] including productions by companies such as Brazzers , Elegant Angel , Evil Angel , Girlfriends Films , Jules Jordan Video , New Sensations and Sweetheart Video . [9] She was nominated for four AVN Awards in her lifetime, including three nominations for Female Performer of the Year . [10]

In 2016, she appeared in the non-pornographic film Model for Murder: The Centerfold Killer . [11]

Ames married Kevin Moore, a pornography producer and director for Evil Angel . [12] [13]

Weeks prior to her death, Ames said that she had a history of bipolar depressive disorder and dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality) due to a traumatic childhood, stating: "Some days I'll be fine and if I'm not doing anything I'll get these awful flashbacks of my childhood and I get very depressed and I can't get out of bed and cancel my scenes for like a week or two." [8]

In December 2017, Ames was due to perform in a pornographic scene, but withdrew when she learned that the co-star was a man who had appeared in gay pornography . On 3 December 2017, Ames wrote on Twitter : [14]

The tweet drew criticism and abuse from social media users. Jaxton Wheeler, a pansexual performer, demanded that Ames apologize or take a cyanide pill, which he later said he regretted. [16] [17] Ames, who was bisexual , defended her right to exercise her sexual autonomy in a subsequent tweet. [18] [19]

On 5 December 2017, two days after her tweet, Ames was found dead in a park in Camarillo, California , at the age of 23. [20] [3] Her death was ruled a suicide due to asphyxia by hanging by the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office. [21] Upon her autopsy, toxicology results revealed that she had cocaine , marijuana , the antidepressant Sertraline (Zoloft) , and the anxiolytic Alprazolam (Xanax) in her system at her time of death. [22] Close friends stated that cyberbullying led to her suicide. [23]

An investigation into her suicide was covered in the Audible series The Last Days of August by Jon Ronson after her husband, Kevin Moore, encouraged Ronson and his producer to look into the cyberbullying that he claimed had led to Ames's death. In the podcast, Ronson investigates the cyberbullying aspect of the story but then goes further and looks more closely at Moore's role in Ames's death by examining his prior relationships and Ames's history of mental illness. Ronson concludes that a number of people around Ames contributed to the poor mental state that led to her death and draws comparisons between Ames's suicide and the fictional suicide of the young girl in J. B. Priestley 's play An Inspector Calls . [5]

In the wake of Ames' death and the deaths of several other adult performers that year, several initiatives within the industry were proposed to deal with the issue, [24] including The August Project, a hotline conceived by Moore, [25] and Pineapple Support , a non-profit organization launched in April 2018 by British performer Leya Tanit. [26]

Adult film actress August Ames died Tuesday in Camarillo, California, at the age of 23. Ames, born Mercedes Grabowkski, reportedly suffered from depression, according to Hollywood Life.
Ames was married to adult film director Kevin Moore. Moore released a statement through industry trade magazine Adult Video News regarding her death.
“She was the kindest person I ever knew and she meant the world to me,” Moore told Adult Video News . “Please live this as a private family matter in this difficult time.”
Ames was recently the victim of malicious commentary on social media as people called her homophobic for not working with a man who had shot gay porn in the past. She fired back on her own Twitter account, denying the accusations.
“I don’t have anything to apologize for!” she wrote. “Apologizing for taking extra steps to ensure that my body stays safe? F--- you guys attacking me when none of my intentions were malicious. I f------ love the gay community! What the f--- ever! I CHOOSE who I have inside my body. No hate.”
