Skye Aubrey, a third-generation actress whose credits included the Blake Edwards-directed 'The Carey Treatment,' 'The Phantom of Hollywood' and a stint as a flower child opposite Milton Berle on 'Batman,' has died. She was 74.
Skye Aubrey, a third-generation actress whose credits included the Blake Edwards-directed The Carey Treatment , The Phantom of Hollywood and a stint as a flower child opposite Milton Berle on Batman , has died. She was 74.
Aubrey died Nov. 27 of natural causes at her daughter’s home in DeBary, Florida, her family announced .
She was married to Ilya Salkind, a producer on the Superman films starring Christopher Reeve, from 1976-79. Her mother was Phyllis Thaxter , who portrayed Ma Kent in the first installment of the series in 1978 after a solid career as a contract player at MGM and Warner Bros., and her father was James T. Aubrey Jr., president of CBS from 1959-65 and head of MGM from 1969-73.
While studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, Aubrey was discovered by producer David Merrick, who brought her in to star as Toni in 1968 in the original production of Cactus Flower . (Brenda Vaccaro originated the role on the stage before Goldie Hawn was hired for the 1969 movie adaptation.)
Aubrey had made her TV debut in 1967 on ABC’s Batman in an episode that featured Eli Wallach as Mr. Freeze, then played Princess Primrose, an organizer of a “flower-in” who is kidnapped and brainwashed by the evil Louie the Lilac (Berle).
Later, she portrayed a nurse in the medical thriller The Carey Treatment (1972), which starred James Coburn and was based on a Michael Crichton novel.
Susan Aubrey was born on Dec. 21, 1945, in Evanston, Illinois. Not only was her mother an actress, but her grandmother, also named Phyllis Thaxter, was one as well.
She appeared in high-profile telefilms with Anthony Quinn in 1971’s The City , with William Shatner in 1971’s Vanished , with Eve Arden in 1972’s A Very Missing Person , with Jack Cassidy in 1974’s The Phantom of Hollywood and with her mom in 1974’s The Longest Night .
Aubrey also showed up on series including Green Acres , Marcus Welby, M.D. , Ironside , Assignment: Vienna , Toma , Love, American Style , Fantasy Island and Superboy .
Last year, she returned to the stage to star in a Pacific Northwest revival of Mae West’s Sex . At the time of her death, she was preparing to play the lead in Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery .
Survivors include her daughter, actress and producer Anastasia; grandson Elijah; and brother James. Her son, Sebastian, died in July 2017. A tribute to her can be found here .
