A lot of the monsters with life drain (max hp reduction) already have effects if this causes the player to reach 0 max hitpoints, and I feel that an easy insta-kill from a 10 damage hit will make the player feel cheated.

Not Drain Attribute, but the best use of Drain Skill I found so far was on self. Drain Blade 100pts for 1 second on self, cast and talk to a trainer, and train for the cheapest amount possible. This works because the game checks your current skill and multiplies it by 10, and uses that as the price for training. 50 blade = 50*10 = 500g per train.
