Students were punished for wearing the wrong shade of green, layering a sleeveless top underneath a jacket, and exposing their collarbones. When will the madness end?
Many schools claim to have dress codes in place to reduce "distractions" in the classroom. They don't want a kid's graphic tee with an obscene message causing chaos, and they don't want students to focus on how sexy a classmate's outfit is instead of whatever the teacher is saying.
But in recent years, dress code scandals have reached a fever pitch. Every day, girls are sent home from school, given detentions and suspensions, or are humiliated in class for their outfits — and we mean girls , not girls and boys. Dress codes are often problematic in sexist ways. Out of the dozens of dress code scandals that went viral recently, we rounded up 14 of the most shocking cases.
At least one student got in trouble for breaking the dress code of a school she doesn't even attend. Cameron Boland, a junior at Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, Florida, visited nearby Ida S. Baker High School to run for her county's National Honor Society historian. She wore a super cute sun dress to give her speech. After a vote, Cameron won! But before long, officials stripped Cameron of her title since Baker High's dress code forbids spaghetti straps. She asked if she could put on her jacket and redeliver her speech, but officials said no. Even worse, it turns out that district rules state a student should receive a warning about their attire before being punished, and Cameron never did. So, so unfair.
The last day of high school should be an exciting day! But for Evette Reay, a graduating senior at West Side High School in Dayton, Idaho, it turned into a major headache. She was sent home for wearing a loose dress that happened to hit a few inches above the knee. With just hours left in her high school career, Evette was told to go home and change. When she refused, a teacher suspended her for insubordination and threatened to hold her diploma.
Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, California sent dozens of students home during the final week of school for dress code violations. (The school says only 25 students were punished, but some students claim the number was as high as 60.) The school's dress code prohibits girls from wearing tube tops, low cut tops that expose cleavage, tops that expose most to all of their backs (single strap and halter tops), and skirts/shorts/skorts that are shorter than 4" from the top of knee (even if leggings or tights are worn underneath). Boys, on the other hand, have just three rules to watch out for: no bandanas, sagging pants, or tank tops. Considering the 90-degree heat, it seems unfair to limit what girls can wear to school. What else are girls supposed to wear in that weather?
A lot of schools ban spaghetti straps, low-cut tops, and short-shorts. But Woodford County High School in Woodford County, Kentucky takes the concept of a dress code way further: school officials sent home student Stephanie Hughes because her collarbone was showing. Seriously! According to Stephanie's mom Stacie, the school is worried that exposed collarbones might distract male students. So not cool.
Students who break the dress code at Oakleaf High School in Clay County, Florida are forced to change into a "shame suit" consisting of a neon yellow shirt and red sweatpants that both read "DRESS CODE VIOLATION." Student Miranda Larkin wore skirt that nearly reached her knees, but was told to put on the shame suit. She was so upset that started sobbing and broke out in hives. Oakleaf High's humiliating ritual went viral as people were outraged by Miranda's story.
Almost every school has rules about the silhouettes you can wear — mini skirts, no, midi skirts, yes — but it's rare to hear about girls getting in trouble for wearing the wrong color. That's exactly what happened to Kylie, age eight, at Winslow Township Elementary School No. 4 in Sicklerville, New Jersey. She was suspended for a day for wearing a polo shirt in the wrong shade of green! The school's dress code requires collared shirts in white, navy blue, or dark green, and some school officials felt Kylie's shirt wasn't dark enough.
Some schools ban sleeveless tops — but student Tessa Wisloh was sent home from Springstead High School in Hernando County, Florida for wearing a sleeveless top under her long-sleeved zip-up jacket. Her shoulders, arms, and collarbone were completely covered. A teacher asked her to stay after class and unzip her jacket to check if her top had sleeves. When Tessa complied, she was sent home . Administrators aren't clear why this happened, since Tessa's outfit didn't break any part of the dress code.
Just two days before homecoming at Coeur d'Alene High School in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, school administrators told students that they were not allowed to wear spaghetti strap or strapless dresses to the dance. That left many students with just two days to make a big decision — did they splurge on a new dress, risk getting caught, or skip the dance altogether? The school district claims the policy has been in place since 2011, and that they only reminded students of the rule two days before the dance, but students and parents weren't happy.
More than 40 girls were taken out of class in one day at Mt. Juliet High School in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee because their shirts were not deemed long enough to wear with leggings. According to the school's dress code, leggings can be worn as long as they're paired with a dress, skirt, or shorts that falls three inches above the knee. The students were pulled from class and sent home to change.
When it comes to restricted hair styles, some schools enact policies that seem racist. An eighth-grader in Toronto was sent to the principal after a teacher called her natural hair "too poofy" and "unprofessional," and said that "no one would hire her with hair like that" and if "she were working in a store, no one would buy anything from her." The student (who typically wears her hair in braids) was given the option of pulling back her hair, but shouldn't have been forced to make that decision in the first place.
When Kaitlyn Juvik, a senior at Helena High School in Helena, Montana, wore a black, off-the-shoulder tee to school, she went braless but wore nipple stickers underneath for modesty. Although her school's handbook does not specify that students must wear bras, someone in the school building complained that Kaitlyn's lack of bra made them "uncomfortable." She was asked to cover up or put on a bra. A group of boys wore bras over their t-shirts to protest the incident , which spurred a parent to call the police out of concern that the boys were causing a "disruption" and making "inappropriate gestures." The police declined to get involved with the situation, saying that no crime had been committed.
Cleveland High School in Clayton, North Carolina, released a shocking body-shaming video in order to convey the details of its strict dress code for prom. Students were recruited to act as a panel of judges to "vote" on photos of prom dresses. Photos of models were shown and the panel decided which prom dresses were appropriate, and which were "disgusting", "vulgar", and "shameful" – or at least that's what the video suggests. The video took a disturbing twist when it suggested that girls who don't follow the dress code might incite violent riots.
Rose Lynn was sent home from MacArthur High School in Lawton, Oklahoma for wearing a long cardigan, a tank top, leggings, and boots because the tank top didn't cover her crotch . Administrators were reportedly worried that the outfit would distract her male classmates. When she returned to school, she wore an oversized t-shirt with the words "It doesn't cover your crotch" on the front and "You'll distract the boys" on the back. She posted the photo on Facebook, where it has been liked 25,000 times.

On the first day of the semester, Lord Grey School in Buckinghamshire, England, informed 70 girls that their skirts were too short or their pants were too tight. The students were then sent home to change. School officials said they were concerned that male students would be able to peer up the girls' skirts while they climbed the stairs and that tight clothing is unflattering on girls "who are not very slim." Students and parents alike were upset by the school's sexism (no boys were reprimanded) and body-shaming comments.

It's another Monday morning, heralded by the piercing whine of Crysta's alarm clock. "Answer that, will you please Donna?"
mumbled Crysta.

"Wake up, sleepyhead. Its your alarm clock, not the
phone." Donna bounded out of bed, and whipped Crysta's covers off,
leaving her naked on top of her bed.

"Leave me alone, Donna," Crysta said as she curled into the fetal
position.

"Sorry, Crysta. We've both got an early class today. We've
gotta get going." Crysta didn't move. Donna gave her a few
seconds, during which she admired her roommate's huge breasts, then said, "In a minute I'm going to open the door and call for
the boys to bring their Polaroids."

Crysta knew Donna wasn't kidding. She had just done that. Was it last week? No, it
was the week before. The pictures were on the bulletin board for a whole
week before the residence counselor finally took them down. "OK, I'm
up, Donna. No need to call the boys in here."

"I feel sexy this morning," Donna said brightly. "I'm going to wear my
Dare to Be Bare
dress." She said the words "Dare to Be Bare" in a stage
whisper for emphasis. She pulled a dress off a hanger, and held it up.

"What's the big deal about the Dare to Be Bare dress?" asked Crysta,
using her "dopey voice" to mock Donna's stage whisper.

"The big deal is," Donna replied, ignoring her roommate's
derogatory tone, "that no one will know whether I'm wearing a thong under it. 
Haven't you seen the magazine ads, Crysta?" Crysta shook her sleepy
head. Donna continued, "The ads show two girls, both wearing Dare to Be Bare dresses. One is wearing
a thong underneath the dress, and the other is bare- bottom. You can see
both girls' cheeks, but you can't see a thong on either one. You're
supposed to guess which is which. Then you turn the page, and both girls
are holding up their dresses high enough to show one is wearing a thong, and the
other isn't. 
There's more text on the second page that says stuff like you can wear the
Dare to Be Bare dresses with or without underwear, because they cling to you and
just barely cover you, no one will know unless you let them find out, stuff like
that. It's turned into a mystique, not so much for boys to see girls' private
parts, but to guess what they're wearing under their dresses. The important thing", Donna
continued,
"is not to bend over, even if you're wearing the thong, because you never
want to let people know you're wearing anything under the dress. It's
important to keep them guessing."

Crysta didn't say anything. Donna looked at her, and saw that she had fallen back to sleep, which made
Donna mad. Donna
first opened the door to their dorm room, then picked up the glass of water from
beside Crysta's bed, and poured it on her. Crysta jumped out of bed and
screamed. Donna pushed her out the open door and locked it behind
her. There Crysta stood, in the hallway, completely naked. She
looked over each shoulder, and was thankful the hallway was deserted. Crysta quietly knocked, and begged in a low voice to be let in. 
Donna let her stay outside for a few seconds, then opened the door. Crysta
smiled, and said with pretend sweetness, "Good morning, Donna," as if nothing had
happened. Then she walked around Donna. Donna turned so she could
face Crysta, because she was afraid Crysta was up to some revenge for locking
her out. Crysta said, "Stand still. I want to look at your
dress." Donna stood still, and Crysta crouched as she continued
examining Donna from all sides, now lightly touching Donna's legs and cheeks,
raising goose bumps to mark the position of the bottom of her dress. "This is a great dress,"
Crysta said. "It's sheer at the bottom, so I get the impression I can see
through it, but when I try to see anything in particular, like your pussy that
is, I can't make it out."

Donna moved her legs apart, and looked over her shoulder. She asked, "So you can't tell whether I'm wearing a thong?"

"I would guess not. Am I right?" Before Donna could
answer, Crysta lifted the front of Donna's dress to look for herself. She
not only saw she was right, but also that Donna was getting excited. She
touched the slippery space between Donna's lips, and laughed as Donna shivered
with excitement.

"Well, you guessed right. But you can't tell for sure, and
that's the idea of this dress. It's mostly opaque, but fades to sheer at
the very bottom, giving no distinct line at the hem. It's more sheer in
the back than the front, showing some of my crack, and giving the impression
that it should be easy to see my front, too, but it's just out of view."

"I'm glad to see you're finally going bottomless," said Crysta.

"I'm sorry, Crysta. I know how much you want me to go bottomless
in public, and I really wish I could, but I can't."

"It's not for me, Donna. You're the one who told me you need to

"I just can't

me, so I sat down again, and everything
seemed normal. My heart was beating fast. I was afraid I would be arrested
for indecency or something. But nothing happened. Everything was fine."

"Did you go home and change right away?" Donna asked, fascinated by
the story.

"The funny thing is after I calmed down I started to realize that no one was going to stop me. It was like the
story about the emperor's new clothes, do you know the one?" Donna
nodded. "I thought back. Had people treated me differently that morning? I had received some admiring glances that morning, but I get a lot of those." 
Crysta knew she was beautiful. "The campus bus had been crowded, so I was standing, and a guy gave me his seat."

"Yes, but I didn't think anything of it at the time. Thinking back
on it, maybe he was embarrassed for me, and expected me to sit down and cover up

"Did you go home and change?" Donna repeated.

"Well, I couldn't change right away. I was late for my next class. 
Besides, I became bolder when I realized people would pretend I was fully
