I finally got to visit the Annaneraie district of Yopougon this weekend map here. I had been wanting to visit Yopougon basically since I had arrived last year, so I was pleased with the opportunity to have done so recently. Mon patron, Monsieur Koffi was the chauffeur for the day, and we cruised along the sparsely populated streets and highways of Abidjan together, for it was Sunday and many were at church repenting their sins. We were on the road, and Koffi was busy asking me if I had a local name. You know, an Ivorian name that someone here has given you? I looked out the window at the green tree-tops that were whizzing by in the Banco National Park. The air was warm as it rushed past my hand sticking out the window over the highway. We arrived to Yopougon in the afternoon. Koffi was scoping out a new place that he had told me about. I was just happy to get out of Riviera and into another district that I had long wanted to see. Upon arriving, we were seated on a leather sofa outside under a red-tent-covered area. Koffi asked me what I wanted to drink; the options were beer, wine, or liquor. Drinks were delivered and we soon commenced an activity that would last all the livelong day. But eating it for a newcomer can be a challenge; if not experienced in technique in eating placali , then one is sure to have a mess — literally. Sauce kope is so stringy, too, that it seems to get everywhere, and the newcomer does not often know what to do with all the slimy green okra sauce that gets everywhere, like hot spicy green African bubble gum, perhaps. Today, I finally feel as though I actually began to begin to master the art of eating placali ; I think the trick is to cup your right hand and only your right hand a bit, holding some of the placali and sauce kope in your fingers, then kind of shove your whole hand into your mouth, up to your first or second knuckle. I was taking notes. I was the last to finish, but I finished, and those who ate with me and who served me were pleased. She agreed and said oui. Le blanc! We chatted together as we walked around the neighborhood, just chatting and getting to know one another. Upon returning, the wine was produced, and all took part in helping to empty the wine bottles of their sweet red contents. We continued sitting and chatting together for most of the afternoon. I just kind of sat there, looking pleasant and entertained as I was not able to contribute to much of the conversation, but I was an honored guest as I later found out, for bottles of wine were offered to me, making it clear that my presence was a special occasion. I, in turn, offered the same, acknowledging the fact that I humbly accepted the wine offered me, and therefore returned the favor by giving my hosts the same gift they had given me, a favor that I was told that they deeply appreciated. This kid was so cute. It was fun for me to watch how much joy this tiny little person brought into their lives. We took turns holding the baby and taking photos. The baby was wrapped onto the back of her mother, as babies so often are here, and three of the ladies with us this afternoon began singing. Soon, more friends and relatives appeared, so we changed locations to a more comfortable place where we could feel more of the afternoon breeze pass us by. Spending time in Yopougon was nice, for it opened up a side of Abidjan that I had not seen yet. While it all felt very familiar, it also felt very different, for I knew I was on the other side of town. Koffi, thanks for showing me a great time.
