Asshole, similar to Kings Cup, is a drinking game that you will find being played globally. This, in large part, owes to its simplicity and the fun that can be had with the game rules, as well as its ability to help all players have a few beers!
While you might find other different players give it a different name and even have different rules, the principles of the game are mainly the same as what we have laid out in this post.
Some alternative names from around the world are President, Scum, Warlords, Butthead and Root Beer, amongst others. Rumour has it that this game was founded by four Australian students who were looking for a fun new drinking game. We could bore you with the full history, but let’s move on to the good stuff – The game itself!
One of the biggest plus points of Asshole is how simple it is to set-up. All you need are:
A deck of cards
4 -7 players
Beers
A big enough playing space for you all to sit around, such as a table
Pen and paper for scoring (optional)
This simple set-up means Asshole can be played virtually anywhere. You could even practice without the beers, but where’s the fun in that?
The objective of the game is to get rid of all of your cards as quickly as possible. The first player to do so becomes the President, while the last person left holding their cards is crowned the Asshole.
The game as a whole can be won two ways – By adding up how many times each player has been the President and Asshole (we will explain these later) or by giving each rank a score – You will need to decide beforehand what score needs to be reached to end the game.
The President is the player who clears their hand first in any given round. If scoring, award the player who becomes President 2 points.
The Vice-President is the player who gets rid of their cards second. If scoring, award this player 1 point.
This is the player who comes second-from-last. This player is given -1 points if scoring.
The Asshole is the player left holding their cards after every other player has discarded theirs. This player is given -2 points if scoring.
These ranks are useful to include when you are playing with more than four players.
Neutral: When playing with 5 players, this is the player who comes in third. If scoring, they score 0 points.
Upper Neutral: Similar to above, this role is introduced when playing with six or more players. This is the player who finishes in third or fourth and scores 0.
Lower Neutral: When playing with six or more players, this can be the person who finishes in 4th with a group of six players or 5th in a group of seven players.
If you are playing with six players, the easiest thing to do is remove the Neutral rank and play with Upper Neutral and Lower Neutral.
To summarise, this is the order of rankings and their scores:
When playing with seven players, use all of the rankings above. When using fewer players, remove the ranks from the middle, working outwards. You cannot play with less than four players; it takes away the opportunity to call somebody an asshole!
The dealer starts by dealing all of the cards clockwise to all of the players.
In Asshole, the number 2 (get it?) is the highest-ranking card, with the 3 also holding special powers. The ranking of cards is as follows:
Ranking of Cards: 2, 3, A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4
2 of any suit: A 2 can be played at any time and clears the round. For example, if you cannot lay higher than a 10, laying a 2 will reset play and clear the deck.
3 of any suit: A 3 is a wild card, meaning it can be played to represent any value. If you have two 3s, these can be played together to reset and clear the deck.
The player who has the 4 of Clubs in their hands starts the round. The next player then has to lay a card of equal or higher rank.
If a player plays a card of the same rank as the card just laid (e.g. the 4 of Diamonds) the next player round has to skip their turn.
If a player has two or more cards of the same rank (e.g. two 5s), they can lay these all at once. The next player then has to lay at least two cards of an equal or higher rank.
f a player is unable to lay any cards, they can pass their turn.
Gameplay continues until a play is made where every player passes. When this occurs, all played cards are pushed to one side and the last player to lay a card restarts the game.
Play continues until only one player is left holding cards. The last player holding their cards is the Asshole!
Passing: It is important to remember that you DO NOT have to play cards even if you can take a turn – You can choose to pass in order to make your future rounds stronger. This could, for example, help you ensure that the player next to you cannot go, making them more likely to be the Asshole!
Once the first round has been played, you should now have a President, Vice-President, Vice-Asshole and Asshole. Each of the players has special privileges or forfeits, depending on where they finish. Neutrals receive neither:
President
Before the start of the round, the President can take two cards of their choosing from the Asshole and then gives the Asshole two of their own cards.
Starts the round
Can tell any player to drink at any time
Can order either the Asshole or Vice-Asshole to get them a drink at any time.
Vice-President
At the start of the round, the Vice-President can request a card from the Vice-Asshole in exchange for a card of their choice.
Goes second in the round
Can tell anyone other than the President to drink
Neutrals
Have no power but receive no punishments except when ordered to drink
Vice-Asshole
Gives the Vice-President a card of the Vice-President’s choosing before each round in exchange for one of theirs.
Goes second to last
Can make the Asshole take a drink
Asshole
Goes last
Has to give the President two cards from their own hand of the President’s choosing
Is responsible for refilling other player’s drinks
Must deal all cards and clear any piles when a round is over
Is an Asshole
As you can tell from the above, being the Asshole is not a position you want to find yourself in – once you are in that chair it can be hard to get out!
The less inebriated of you may have read this far and realised that we have barely mentioned the drinking rules of this game. Don’t worry, we have you covered! The most common ones are as follows.
When you get skipped : Take a drink
When a 2 is played : Everyone drinks
When the President calls a Board Meeting : Everyone waterfalls. For the uninitiated, a waterfall starts with one-person drinking. As soon as they start drinking the person to their left also starts. This continues around the circle. You can only stop drinking when the player to your right stops drinking The President can call a Board Meeting at any time during the round.
When a higher rank tells you to drink : Take a drink
The President is also allowed to add extra rules as they see fit, but these only last for as long as they are President – If this is you be warned, with great power comes great responsibility. It’s fun when you are on top but the Asshole will remember your reign on the day that they become President!
Some popular rules that can be made by the President are as follows:
Thumb Master : At any point during their reign, the President can put their thumb on the table. Every player then has to do the same. The last player to do so takes a drink.
Forget Names : Any player who calls another player by their name has to drink.
Rank names: Alternatively, any player who does not call a player by their rank name (President, Asshole, Vice-President etc) has to drink.
Are you looking at me? Anyone who makes eye contact with the President has to drink
Weak-hand drinking rules : Everyone has to drink using their weaker hand. Anyone caught not doing so has to immediately down their drink.
Tiny man: Everyone has an imaginary little man sat on the rim of their glass. Each time they drink they have to take the little man off of their glass using their finger and thumb, put him on the table, drink and then put him back. Anyone who fails to do this must drink.
The above rules sum up how to get a game of Asshole started and how to play, so if you have read up to this point you are good to go. Below we have included some alternative rules you can add to mix up the game if you so choose!
Pick up the deck: If every player passes the player after the last player to lay a card has to pick up the entire deck of cards and add them to their hand.
Jokers can be introduced to the game and can be used as special cards. Examples of rules that can be applied to a Joker are as follows:
Jokers are wild: A Joker has any value, meaning it can be laid on any card, with the player who plays the card declaring what card it represents – It can represent special cards.
Jokers are transparent: Jokers are completely transparent, meaning the next player has to match or place a higher card than whatever was laid prior to the Joker being played.
The player can still the role of President, swapping their role with that of the President. This is best played early on to see maximum benefit.
8 is low: If an 8 is played, the next player has to lay a card of equal to or lower than an 8.
9 is reverse: If a 9 is played, the order of play is reversed.
4 of a kind burns the deck: If 4 of the same cards are played (either by one player on in subsequent plays by multiple players), the pile is discarded.

President (also commonly called Asshole , [1] Scum , [1] or Capitalism [1] ) is a shedding card game for three or more, in which the players race to get rid of all of the cards in their hands in order to become "president" in the following round. [2] [3] [4] It is a Westernized version of Chinese climbing card games [5] such as Zheng Shangyou , and the Japanese Daifugō . [1]

President can also be played as a drinking game , [2] [3] [4] [6] and commercial versions of the game with a non-standard deck exist, including The Great Dalmuti and Presidents Card Game. [7]

There may be many titles used by players during the game. [2] [6] Often, players move seats to sit in the order of their place, so as not to forget the order. There is generally at least a president, vice-president and scum. [2] However, this game is usually played with up to 6 players, and if so, more titles may be needed.

Rules regarding card passing can be changed to accommodate these two positions if desired. A large or odd number of players generally calls for having at least one "Person" role, but there can be as many as needed.

The President (or the Scum in some versions) deals the cards, starting with themselves and proceeding in order of player hierarchy from low to high until all cards are dealt. If the Scum is the dealer, this ensures that the President begins with the fewest cards if the hands are uneven.

The rules provided are merely one of many ways known to play the game; [1] there are many different varieties with slight twists to the rules.

The person who is president (or the scum in some versions) shuffles and deals the cards. All the cards are dealt as evenly as possible in clockwise rotation.

After cards are dealt, the scum must hand over the best card in their hand to the president, and the president passes back any card they do not want. [1]

Variations with multiple top and two bottom positions often require the scum to hand additional cards to the president, up to the number of top positions in the game. (For example, a game with a secretary and clerk might call for the scum to hand over three cards to the president, the high-scum to hand over two cards to the vice-president and the clerk to hand over one card to the secretary.) In any event, the players who receive cards from the bottom positions always hand back an equal number of "junk" cards that they do not want. They are not obliged to pass back their lowest cards.

Play in President is organized into tricks , much like in spades or bridge . However, unlike those games, each trick can involve more than one card played by each player, and players do not have to play a card in a trick. Suits are irrelevant in the game of president.

The player on the dealer's left begins by leading any number of cards of the same rank (1–4; 5 or more are possible with wildcards, jokers or multiple decks). The player on the left may then play an equal number of matching cards with a higher face value, or may pass. (In a few variants, it is permitted to play cards with an equal value as the last cards played. Doing so may skip the player next in order.) Note that the same number of cards as the lead must be played. If the leader starts with a pair, only pairs may be played on top of it. If three-of-a-kind is led, only three-of-a-kinds can be played on top of it. (There are notable exceptions among the many variants in this game.) The next player may do the same, and so on.

This continues until all players have had a turn (which may or may not be because the highest-value card has already been played), or opted to pass.

When one player runs out of cards, they are out of play for the rest of the round, but the other players can continue to play to figure out the titles. A few versions hold that once a player goes out, players count remaining card values to establish titles, or simply count the number of cards remaining in each player's hand, and other versions have one player left with cards at the end.

When playing by traditional rules, once titles are decided, everyone needs to get up and move. The President is the dealer (or the Scum in some versions), and the players must rearrange themselves around them so that they are seated in order of rank, clockwise. Some variants do not rearrange the seating of the players, so everyone plays in the same order each hand (though the president still leads the first trick).

After the first round has determined player rank, subsequent hands are opened by the president.

In some variations of the game, after the president (or whoever deals) has dealt and everyone has received their decks, the players are able to trade cards with one another. In a group of four, the president gives two cards of their choice to scum (who responds with the two very best cards from their hand), and the vice-president gives one card of their choosing to vice-scum, who responds with their very best card. In some variants, the president may choose to allow a black market, in which any player can trade with any other player. When this happens, the President usually has a poor hand and needs better cards. The president may also allow table talk, which is when two given players (usually of adjacent ranks) let each other see each other's hands.

In one variation, the trades between higher players and lower players are reversed. The president trades their two best cards to the scum, and the scum gives their two worst cards to the president, and the same goes with the vice president and scum. This variation is comedically known as "Communism" or "Socialism."

Some play that the holder of the lowest card of a particular suit (eg. 3 ♣ ) leads the first deal. [1] Others play that the scum always starts.

Certain variants allow for game-changing revolutions. If a player leads out with four of a kind, the hierarchy of all the cards will be reversed. For example, if 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 J Q K A 2 is the typical order of power (from left to right), after four of a kind is played it would be the reverse of that: 2 A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 . If another four of a kind is played, the order would switch back. Revolutions are typically utilized in the game to create better balance and avoid having the same player remain in first position forever.

In some variants, there are certain cards that are able to be played over a 2, those being the two "One-Eyed" Jacks (The Jack of Spades and the Jack of Hearts) and the "Suicide King" (the King of Hearts), the latter of which also ranks above the former. This is often also played in conjunction with the stipulation that one fewer of a bomb card is required to be played over a trick of pairs or triples. For example, if a player plays 4 aces, it can be beaten with three 2s, both One-Eyed Jacks, or the King of Hearts. This creates a rare but interesting scenario where if all four 2s are played at once, it is unbeatable as trumping it would require 3 One-Eyed Jacks or two Suicide Kings, which is impossible if playing with only one deck.

In some variants, a player cannot end on a 2 or a joker (or any card that instantly clears the deck), otherwise they immediately become scum/super scum, regardless of who actually got rid of their cards last. (For example, in game, Bob and Alice are the only people left. Bob has an ace and a 2 in his hand. He plays the ace, which Alice cannot play on. That card is discarded, however, Bob has ended on a 2, which means he immediately becomes scum/super scum, and Alice does not fall t
