News and discussions relating to George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, his Westeros-based short stories, the "Game of Thrones" and "House of the Dragon" TV series, and all things ASOIAF - but with particular emphasis on the written series.
Why doesn’t this comment have more likes
I think Brienne and Jaime totally want to fuck each other and I'm really weirded out that this isn't considered canon by everyone else.
He is considered one of the hottest guys in Westeros by multiple people, and Brienne is basically Sansa in the pretty boys department. She even thinks that he looked half a god when she saw him naked.
Jaime's attraction to her is what's really interesting. He literally fought a bear with one hand for her. Thinks constantly about how pretty her eyes are. Defends her honor when another knight makes fun of her. Says she looks good in blue, because it matches her eyes. Oh, did I say he loves her eyes? He has a fever dream where she looks hot. "In this light, she could almost be a beauty." He thinks she is gentler than Cersei, the only woman he ever had eyes on before Brienne. And, finally, he chooses to share a bathtub with her out of nowhere, tells the true story about his most famous act (that he never told anyone else) in a desperate attempt to make her stop judging him, and gets a boner when she appears naked. Of course, he can't admit it to himself. Yet. But it's there, she is his muse and this is honestly a way more convincing love story than Dany and Drogo.
edit: a few comments are bringing up they are not only sexually attracted but also have a deep admiration and respect for each other, creating a beautiful connection that transcend the carnal thing. I wholeheartedly agree... on Jaime's side. I think Brienne has a very girly crush on him, which is totally understandable because she's barely 18 at the beginning of the books. Jaime is different, he's a guy almost twice her age, who has a lot of baggage and literally shags the queen. His feelings about Brienne are extremely complex and tied to his deep-seated issues regarding honor and reputation. Anyway, I'm sorry my comment wasn't very nuanced.

Yeah, and like, its more than just sex, this is so clearly a full-on love story arc how can anyone deny it?
Tyrion likes whores. He fucks. Most of the time he doesn't have a personal attachment. Until that time he does.
Brienne and Jaime wouldn't be just a romp. There's a deep personal connection there built over shared tribulations, and shared outlooks.
There's certainly a lot of clues in the books that they find each other physically attractive, but I think even if Jaime didn't find Brienne's form to his eye, he likes her personally enough that he would not care.
It's because Brienne is ugly. Nobody would be questioning it if she were traditionally attractive.
And your reading of the relationship is 100% correct.
The 'Sansa in the pretty boys department' though!!! I have never known that I needed such a phrase!!! LOL!!!
I chose 'other' because I think they are both in denial about their romantic/sexual feelings, but I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said here.
I think it's something more complex than romantic connection or friend connection or respect. I think they at least unconsciously see themselves in each other, especially as Jaime's personality develops in ASoS and AFfC: they're both people who feel others have an image of them which despite having some basis in truth doesn't show their true selves and they do not feel safe enough of confident enough to let their true selves to flourish (despite them both unknowingly moving toward it). Brienne has self doubt over her quality as a knight and daughter, but she's shown real skill (her fight at the end of Feast is legit impressive in real life, even if Gendry saved her) and dedication and caring. Jaime feels like he's seen as a cold hearted asshole and a puppet of Cersei and others, but by the end of ADwD he's making his own decisions, he's legit putting others before his own wants, and he's doing real reflection and insight on his past mistakes (I adore the scene of him reading the White Book). Two people who ultimately want to be better than how they're seen and acted, they're afraid they cannot be better despite wanting it, but see and believe in the other's capacity to be that better person. Not to mention mutual respect for their skills and other traits.
That sort of connection can have a romantic element or it could just be a close friendship. Either way, it's a basis for a strong bond (love doesn't always mean banging and romance, y'all also love family and close friends) and we're getting to see it play out. In a literary sense, them at least banging at least once (or getting reeeeeeeeal close) is definitely appropriate tho lol.
I just think it's more complicated for Jaime than "he wants to fuck her." Brienne is more like a peer to him as a fellow warrior, and they've been through this harrowing experience together. Jaime seems to crave her respect and approval, which is why he told her about Aerys and why he killed him. He was opening himself up because he needed someone to understand, to acknowledge that what he did was the right thing to do. He tried to do the same with Ned way back in Book/Season 1, but Ned shut him right the fuck down because he's a hypocritical clown.
She also brings these feelings out of him at a moment when he’s feeling cut off from everything, desperate, and having lost his sense identity. Their connection is way more emotional than primal physical.
I can’t see Brienne wanting to “fuck”. She seems to have the same over romantic view of the world as Sansa does. Would she give her flower to Jaime if he made the move, surely, but she’s not going to just lose herself and jump his bones.
Jaime I think has a similar over romantic outlook. He’s never known another woman, despite them throwing themselves at him for his whole life, but he’s certainly learned that he will have physiological responses to seeing naked women even if he doesn’t love them passionately.
Jaime whacks Ron Connington in the face for calling Brienne ugly. That's a trope that is ripped out your most basic high school rom-com.
It just occured me to how well, at first glance at least, that Beauty and the Beast is an analogue to Jaime and Brienne's relationship both ways simultaneously.
Brienne is the noble beast in physical form while Jaime is the noble beast in spiritual form. Jaime can look past most of Brienne's looks to find the beauty of her soul distinctive and Brienne looks past Jaime's dishonour to find the good man underneath.
Romantic. GRRM explicitly described it as being inspired by Beauty and the Beast, they both dream or fantasise about the other naked, Jaime spends a lot of time mooning over how pretty her eyes are, and Brienne has to force herself to think about Renly in the bathtub after Jaime pops into her head.
About the eyes, that has been on since his first chapter in aSoS.
Regarding Jaime, here are his thoughts about Brienne in his third chapter in Storm:
Jaime was tired. Tired of her suspicions, tired of her insults, tired of her crooked teeth and her broad spotty face and that limp thin hair of hers. Ignoring her protests, he grasped the hilt of his cousin's longsword with both hands, held the corpse down with his foot, and pulled. As the blade slid from the scabbard, he was already pivoting, bringing the sword around and up in a swift deadly arc.
During their journey before Jaime loses his hand, Brienne has been constantly insulting him and angering him. It all culminates to a point where he flat out tries to murder her. He certainly didn't harbor any romantic feelings towards her at that point. Neither her, let's be honest, looks, nor, especially, her treatment of Jaime did entice him to start having sort of a crush towards her back then. Hence I believe it's wrong to use quotes from that time to say that Jaime loves her, including him noticing her eyes which he did in his very first chapter. He was just objectively describing them at that point.
For me it started off with Brienne falling for Jaime and Jaime just looking for her respect, but then as time moved on, from my view, it felt clear his feelings for Cersei got weaker and his feelings for Brienne got stronger.
GRRM has said this is the main ASOIAF romance in one of his book conferences. He’s so invested in them his ancestors were in love (where my Dunk and Egg fans at?) and there are hints that either Jaime knights Brienne or they marry. The stoneheart plot is one of my faves (and I can’t confirm this it may be a rumour) that GRRM has a huge disagreement with dumb and dumber after they ditched it. So yes, I firmly believe Jaime and Brienne’s love story :)

My family is old. We're talking "Fall of Rome" old. It's ruled by the matriarchs of the clan. These women say who may marry who, who will do what kind of work when they finish their military service, and other important things. They decided when the family had gotten big enough to break a branch of the family off and send it forth to another place. America was nice for that. Much better than Europe by the 1600's. America is big, there's plenty of room for our family to grow and expand. The Matrons ensured that their power remained unbroken down through the generations.
It's important to understand something about my family. Before it all fell apart in the late-1990's boys were second class at best. When it came to food it went: Pregnant women, children, women, injured, and boys eat last. Until World War II, boys were not ever taught to read. Never. In some family branches the boys weren't allowed to read until the 1950's or 1960's. "Control your man." is not idle talk. Unruly young boys were dosed with hemlock tea, beaten ruth
