Assess your company's current technology situation

Jack Prabha

Now, it's time to take a critical look at what you are currently doing in IT in order to make better plans. Divide your department into the following three sections and evaluate each one:

organizational infrastructure;

hardware and software infrastructure;

current IT projects.

This is where several people get stuck. Do a survey, but how? A good starting point is the annual survey on the use of IT by FGV and coordinated by Professor Fernando Meirelles. You will have several data to compare your company with others in the same sector (benchmark) and from there you will have a general idea of the points that need to be improved.

SWOT Analysis

A very important tool for IT strategies, especially in this stage of analysis of the current environment is a SWOT analysis (from English Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), or the assessment of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Once this is done, you can go deeper, enter the tactical plan and make a checklist of internal strengths and weaknesses.

Whether you work as a full-time IT Security Consultant or focus on cyber security consultant freelance jobs, you will be involved in the various organizational evaluating risks, issues, and provides solutions for internet security problems.

Its completion is very simple, just mark with an “x” in the current situation of Performance of all items, going from Great Weakness, that is, a very intense weakness at a certain point, (example; not having an end point protection solution stations), until a great Force (example; having an integrated Disaster Recovery plan aligned with the whole organization). Then it's time to say what the Importance of that item is. In order to have a good parameter, it is relevant what collaborates directly for the IT sector and the company to achieve its objectives. Let's take another practical example: let's say that one of your company's overall objectives is to double the number of current customers in one year. Suppose you have a CRM system, but only for part of the sales force and without being configured for greater automation and efficiency. In fact, in the Performance group, a poorly configured and used CRM would be a weakness, however it should be treated as a Major Importance, as it directly impacts the company's ability to get where it wants.
