The marks stretch from weight gain or weight loss and changes in height, primarily due to damage to the dermis. Initially, they may have a reddish or purplish hue, but many people's stretch marks turn white or clear over time to the point where these marks become virtually unnoticeable.

Stretch marks are a funny old thing... Despite being a totally normal, gorgeous and even empowering part of the human body, many women (and, in fact, people of all genders) are still self-conscious about theirs. Which, while we can totally understand, is still super sad. Companies, such as ASOS , are now making an effort to not airbrush out models' stretch marks (hallelujah!) and social media influencers are sharing more real body content than ever before. So, it kinda feels like now is the ultimate time to reclaim and learn to love our stretch marks.
From Chrissy Teigen, to Queen of the Clapback, Kourtney Kardashian , here are some of our favourite celebrities who've posted stunning stretch mark photos, along with their thoughts on embracing body "imperfections" (sorry but doesn't that word just needs to be replaced ASAP?) There's no such thing as a "perfect" or "imperfect" body, remember... it's up to all of us to set our own individual beauty standards.
It goes without saying that no celebrity body confidence list would be complete without Lizzo – she is, in every sense of the word, an icon. And, that couldn't be truer than when it comes to how she celebrates her stretch marks, last year taking to Instagram to proclaim that: "Big grrrl summer has begun."
Soon to be mum-of-two Kylie Jenner took to her Instagram Story recently to prove she's not shy when it comes to her stretch marks – which are on her boobs. Fans of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star were quick to praise her for sharing an unedited picture of her bod, with one tweeting : "@KylieJenner showing off her stretch marks on her boobs...ICONIC!!!!!"
Body confidence influencer Iskra is no stranger when it comes to some self-love online. It makes sense then, that she was all too eager to show off her stretch marks on Instagram, branding them her "tiger stripes".
"This is my body, I love it it's real and I love posting pictures showing how confident I am because society has taught us we have 'flaws' and I'm telling you who gives a [f*ck]," she told her 4.9 million followers . "You are more than your body and you get to decide what beauty is."
For many of us, body confidence comes with age as we unlearn all of the toxic body beliefs we've been under the spell of. Thankfully, with the likes of 25-year-old Euphoria star Barbie leading the way, the next generation of women will be just as confident in their skin as she is.
"Mi lil [sic] stripes are out here," she wrote on Instagram along with a photo of her tum. "Soothing them with Vitamin E oil n [sic] noticing how cute my body can be despite lil changes! [sic]"
Cosmopolitan UK cover star Khloe Kardashian posted a bikini selfie on a recent holiday to Turks and Caicos, showing off the stretch marks at the top of her thighs. And proving she's proud of them, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star captioned the image: "I love my stripes," with a zebra emoji. We love them, too!
She was Born This Way and we're totally here for it. Huge respect to Lady Gaga for this stretch marks selfie, which garnered over a million likes.
One third of the world's most famous trio of sisters , Kourtney posted this incredible boat shot which displays her stretch marks in all their glory. What's not to love about it?
The actress showed off her stomach stretch marks with pride on the front cover of Vogue Australia . Obsessed.
The iWeigh founder is on a one woman mission to reframe the way we think about our bodies. Captioning a sunny selfie, she suggested we rename stretch marks "Babe Marks".
The model, known for being a body positive advocate, shared this super real photo of herself post-birth. She captioned the inspiring shot "Same me. Few new stories." Three cheers for Ashley!
The model/talk show host/icon has long been sharing photos of her stretch marks online. A snap of her thighs, that she captioned "Stretchies say hi!" went viral a few years back and Chrissy has been keeping it real on the gram ever since.
She also tweeted her thoughts on how body confidence can be a slow burner – and how it's okay not to be totally in love with the way you look, all of the time: "Instagram is crazy. I think it’s awesome people have killer bodies and are proud to show them off (I really do!!) but I know how hard it can be to forget what (for lack of a better word) regular ol’ bodies look like when everyone looks bonkers amazing. Also I don’t really call this “body confidence” because I’m not quite there yet. I’m still super insecure. I’m just happy that I can make anyone else out there feel better about themselves!"

The bubbly TV personality describes her stretch marks as "natural glitter" and says she loves the way they look, especially when the sun catches them.
If there's one person who can inspire confidence, it's Rihanna. And showing how much she loves her body in all its glory, the singer shared a series of holiday photos in May 2018 - including one showing off the stretch marks on her bum that so many women have.
Famed for her workout plans, the fitness influencer said she's "proud" of her stretch marks after being asked by fans if she had any. "I am a woman, and I am proud to be one and have these marks! Some of us wont have any at all, some will have them just like me and others will be completely different. We all have them, mine are on the sides of my legs.... for now"
The Australian megababe took to social media to proudly display her "bad ass tiger stripes" and inspired a whole load of others along the way.
When the Destiny's Child legend posted this swimsuit shot, she chose to reference Kendrick Lamar's song Humble (which slates the use of Photoshop) in her caption. The lyrics in Kendricks song include "I’m so sick and tired of the Photoshop... Show me somethin' natural like ass with some stretch marks". A serious power move.
After shaking off the shackles of Photoshop, Demi pledged to only post "real" photos of themself online. We think they look gorgeous! They also shared a series of Instagram stories in which they discussed having cellulite, stretch marks and a lack of thigh gap – but still "loving" themself.
