An ASS file is a subtitles file created with Aegisub, a cross-platform application that allows users to create their own subtitles. It contains subtitles for use with movies, anime, or karaoke tracks. ASS files are formatted using Advanced SubStation Alpha syntax, which allows users to apply various formatting to their subtitle text.
When creating ASS files in Aegisub, you can modify your subtitle text's:
This formatting is then saved within the ASS file, along with the subtitles' timing and sequence. When creating subtitles for movies and anime, you can also specify which character is speaking each line, and the speakers' names are saved within the ASS file.
To view the contents of or edit an ASS file, you should open it in Aegisub. To do so, open Aegisub, select File → Open Subtitles..., and then open your ASS file.
If you don't have access to or don't want to install Aegisub, you can also view an ASS file's contents using any text editor, such as Notepad (Windows), TextEdit (Mac), and Atom.
If you want to use an ASS file as a subtitle track, you can add the file as a subtitle track in VideoLAN VLC media player and other media players. To add an ASS file as a subtitle track in VLC media player, select Subtitles → Add Subtitle File... from the program's menu bar.
An ASS file is a compressed data file created for Splinter Cell Blacklist, a third-person action-adventure stealth game. It holds map layout data referenced by the game for each level in Splinter Cell. ASS files are often accompanied by .ASSTRM files, and they are not meant to be opened.
NOTE: Much like ASS files, .UMD files contain Splinter Cell gameplay data as well.
