They can also be used to cook food and warm dishes, which reduces the necessity for additional appliances, such as toasters or warming plates.

DOE performs several analyses when evaluating possible amended energy conservation standards. These include market and technology assessments screening analyses, engineering analyses, and national impact analysis (NIA). In this SNOPR DOE will utilize its existing engineering analysis on microwave ovens to determine what level of efficiency improvements are feasible for this particular product.

In the engineering analysis, DOE will compare the design parameters of a microwave to a set of energy performance goals. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.

As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the impacts on consumers for each product class, including lifecycle cost savings, and simple payback time ("PBP"). DOE will use the Government Regulatory Impact Model, with an adaptation for microwavable ovens, to determine the industry's net present value (NPV).

The impact of manufacturers will be assessed also, and DOE will employ a modified version of the Industry Cash Flow model, which has been adapted for this type of product to calculate the manufacturing NPV. DOE will also look at the impact of these proposals on small businesses as well as other manufacturing subgroups to determine those who are likely to be affected.

DOE will also look into whether the test procedure for microwave ovens has to be updated in order to include active mode power consumption as well as an energy use measure. Currently, the test procedures only deal with the standby mode power usage.

Design

Wall ovens are based on the circulation of hot air evenly while microwaves use waves to cause water molecules in food items to vibrate and produce heat. Combination wall ovens combine these two different appliances into a single unit that helps save kitchen space and gives an elegant, modern look. You should carefully consider your budget and goals before investing in a combination wall oven. A few of the combo wall ovens in our ratings have issues with performance or design.
