If you look at my articles, you will see that I do a lot of Asian articles, fitness articles and wrestling articles. So why not combine them all into one article? Okay, we all know that pro wrestling is scripted, but you take a lot of punishment both inside and outside of the squared circle. And to go through that day in and day out, you have to be in pretty incredible shape. So I thought today I would combine by love of wrestling, all things Asian and my love of fitness and do a Hub about some of today's beautiful Asian female wrestlers that are having a big impact on today's wrestling promotions. Several years ago, TNA and the (then) WWF brought a lot of great Asian talent to their rings. Japanese wrestling legend Akira Hokuto was the first (and only) WCW Women's Champion and Toshie Uematsu was the first WCW Women's Cruiserweight Champion. And the Jumping Bomb Angels (Noriyo Tateno and Itsuki Yamazaki) held the WWF Women's Tag Team Championship at one time. But this article is about the Asian stars of today that have made (or are making) their marks in female wrestling (and on their opponents) today. So first on this female wrestlers list is.....
Former WWE Diva and TNA Knockout Gail Kim
Gail Kim was born on February 20,1976 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This pro wrestler, valet, model, and actress is of Korean descent. Gail has wrestled for the WWE, TNA and some Indy promotions before that. Actually, I think Gail may be the first Asian female wrestler to really get attention here in the US. Gail was always athletic even before wrestling. She was into basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, and badminton in college. Gail also studied kinesiology at the University of Toronto, and nutrition at Ryerson University. She has held both the WWE Women's Championship and the TNA Women's World Championship.
Another young lady that once worked for the WWE is the lovely Lena Yada. Lena was born on November 12th,1978 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is of Japanese-American desent. Before wrestling, Lena was the first runner-up in the 2002 Ms. Venus Swimwear International pageant, Miss Hawaiian Tropic Japan and she competed in the quarter finals of the 2007 World Title of Tandem Surfing. Although Lena is no longer with the WWE, she is still working for Independent wrestling promotions, and is rumored to be associated with the all-female wrestling organization Wrestlicious. But according to Lena's own MySpace page, even she isn't sure what her status is with the company. She has also been seen backstage at TNA shows, so anything is possible. Besides tossing other women around the ring, Lena has appeared in a few movies and TV shows like Son of the Beach (2002), I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007) and Squeegees (2008). Lena is now Lena Yada Draiman because on September 25th, 2011, she married David Draiman, the lead singer of Disturbed. I think she has retired from wrestling now which is too bad because how cool would it have been for her to have "Down with the Sickness" as her entrance theme?
You may remember Angela Fong on the WWE using the ring name "Savannah". Angela was born on February 3, 1985 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Although Angela is currently working as an interviewer on ECW, she has made great progress with her wrestling skills. In Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), Angela won the first ever "Queen of FCW" back on February 5, 2009, defeating Alicia Fox in the final round of a tournament. Before wrestling, Angela was a cheerleader for the Canadian Football League team, the BC Lions. She was released by the WWE on June 23rd, 2010. On September 26, 2010 she defeated Randi West to win the vacant Ground Breaking Pro Wrestling Ladies Championship, becoming it's first champion. I checked the roster on their website, and as of May 17th, 2012 she is still listed there.
Angela is currently working for Lucha Underground as Black Lotus.
Ayako Hamada - Japanese Female Wrestler
Ayako Hamada was born in Mexico City, Mexico (on February 14th, 1981) and is of mixed Japanese and Mexican descent. And even though she was born in Mexico, she made quite a name for herself in the wrestling rings of Japan. But now she works for TNA wrestling here. Ayako has also started working for the all female wrestling promotion Shimmer Women Athletes. While in Japan she worked for All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling, HUSTLE, GAEA Japan, NEO Japan in Japan, and Grupo Internacional Revolucion, Universal Wrestling Association, World Wrestling Association and Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) in Mexico. Ayako was released by TNA in December of 2010 and she has gone on to work for Shimmer Women Athletes and Jersey All Pro Wrestling.
Lovely independent female wrestler Su Yung has made quite a name for herself in Magnificent Ladies Wrestling (formerly Memphis Ladies Wrestling) where she was the MLW Champion and 2008 Rookie of the Year. I really like the MLW promotion because they focus on "old school" wrestling with ladies that can actually wrestle. You can check out their website here: http://www.mlwonline.com/ In May 2010, Su was signed to a WWE developmental contract with WWE and worked for Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). On August 8th, 2011, she was released from her developmental contract.
Sumie Sakai was born on November 24th, 1971 in Suzuka, Mie, Japan Sumie is another Indy wrestler that has been around quite awhile and really paid her dues. She debuted in 1997 and has worked for wrestling promotions like All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling, American Wrestling Federation, JDStar, New England Championship Wrestling and Women Extreme Wrestling. Sumie is is another pro wrestler that has tried her hand at MMA. On October 14, 2006, she took on Amy Davis in a match that ended in a no contest. Since then her record has been less than stellar, losing to Iman Achhal, Jessica Pene and Jessica Aguilar. Before getting into wrestling, Sumie was a judo practitioner.
Another Indy wrestler, Jade Chung was born on November 6th, 1984 Guelph, Ontario, Canada (yes...another Canadian) and is of Chinese-Vietnamese decent. Before she got into wrestling, Jade was a runway model and appeared in several Vietnamese fashion magazines. She was also a top ten finalist in the 2004 Miss Viet Canada Pageant. But she loved wrestling, and as a child, she grew up watching the WWF. So after meeting Beth Phoenix and Traci Brooks at a local arena, she decided to enter the world of pro wrestling. Jade trained at Rob Fuego’s Toronto wrestling school, Squared Circle Training, and made her pro wrestling debut in September 2003 as a manager. She eventually actually got into the ring by displaying a drive to wrestle. That display included clamping a sleeper hold on CM Punk during a match and hitting Prince Nana with a tilt-a-whirl DDT. Jade has managed wrestlers like A-1, B Boy, Jack Evans, Shane Douglas, A.J. Styles and Austin Aries. She has worked for Border City Wrestling, IWA Mid-South, the National Wrestling Alliance, Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.
Okay, I know that Hawaiians are Polynesian people, but I don't think I have enough material to do a Hawaiian female wrestler Hub, so I'm including Malia Hosaka here. Malia was born on October 7th, 1969 in Honolulu, Hawaii and has been actively wrestling since her debut on August 7, 1987. During her career, she has wrestled for a ton of wrestling promotions including the Ladies Professional Wrestling Association (LPWA) , Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), New Dimension Wrestling, the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), TNA, Shimmer Women Athletes and the IWA (Louisiana). A twenty two year career in wrestling is nothing to scoff at!
Kristina Laum was born on November 23rd, 1976 in Seoul, South Korea. The name Kristina Laum may not be familiar to you, but if you watched the original ECW (not the watered down WWE version), you may remember her under the legendary ring name (you KNOW Paul Heyman had to come up with this) Kimona Wanalaya. And if you kept up with WCW, you may remember her as Leia Meow. Kristina really wasn't known so much for her wrestling (she did actually wrestle a few times) but for getting into catfights with other people's valets and interfering in matches. And she is probably pretty well known for the incident between her and Beulah McGillicutty.
Another young lady not known so much for her wrestling skill is Hiroko Suzuki . Hiroko was born in 1975 in Aichi, Japan. She's probably best known here for the time she spent working for World Wrestling Entertainment on its SmackDown! show. Hiroko was Kenzo Suzuki's geisha valet and translator. Although she was never a serious in ring competitor, Hiroko did engage in a feud with Torrie Wilson that ended in a kimono match. Yes a kimono match. We are taling about the WWE here. After being released from the WWE, Hiroko and her husband went back to Japan, and began working for the HUSTLE wrestling promotion.
Female pro wrestler Mia Yim was born on April 16th, 1989 and she was raised in San Bernardino, CA. Mia is half Korean and half African American and as a matter of fact, one of her nicknames is the "Blasian Barbie". Before she got into wrestling, Mia played volleyball for eight years and she received awards like MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and Offensive player of the Year. And she was captain of the team for awhile as well. In wrestling, Mia was trained by pro wrestlers Delirious, Daizee Haze, The Blk Jeez, Drew Gulak and DJ Hyde. She has worked for various wrestling promotions like Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), Jersey All Pro Wrestling (JAPW), Vanguard Championship Wrestling, Supreme Pro Wrestling, American Championship Wrestling, Ring of Honor (ROH) and Extreme Wresting Entertainment. She got a lot of mainstream attention for a match she had with Mickie James (while Mickie was between WWE and TNA in a match for Maryland Championship Wrestling) and Mia also tried out for TNA wrestling. TNA declined. Their loss.
Jeannie Kim is one of those "look fast or you'll miss her" wrestlers. This beautiful five foot six, 115 pound lady was born on December 13th, 19?? in Seoul, South Korea. If you watched Women of Wrestling (WOW) back in the day, you may remember her as Lotus (she was part of the "Asian Invasion" with Jade). Or if you were lucky enough to see CRUSH, you may have seen her as Tsunami. Or if you were at E3 when they were originally promoting Konami's Rumble Roses, you might have seen her as Reiko. Or you might have seen her as Viper on Wrestlicious.
And speaking of "look fast or you'll miss her" wrestlers, here is Jeannie's tag team partner in WOW, Jennifer Lee Chan better known as Jade. Even though Jennifer was an actress turned wrestler, she did fairly decent in the ring. She did some high flying moves, but was usually known as a jobber. Jennifer was also "Chica" in CRUSH Wrestling (2003). Besides wrestling she has appeared on TV in Oh Yeah! (SPIKE TV), Suddenly Susan (NBC), Pro-Beach Hockey (ESPN) and other shows. Jennifer is five foot three and weighs 105.
Update: Jennifer returned to the newly relaunched WOW as Jade (sadly without Lotus) in 2013.
And I couldn't end this Hub without mentioning Nitro Girl Chae . Chae An was born on August 8th, 1973 in Seoul, Korea and she was one of the infamous WCW Nitro Girls. Before becoming a Nitro Girl in 1997, she was a cheerleader for the Atlanta Falcons. From 1996 to 2002, Chae dated wrestler Kevin Nash. And along with other Nitro Girls, Melissa aka Spice, Teri aka Fyre, Vanessa aka Tygress and Chiquita aka Chiquita, she was part of the entertainment group, Diversity 5. They released one cd single (I Promise/Shake Me Up) in 2001, but the group faded away. As of May 2011, the WBFF (World Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation) still lists Chae as one of their competitors.
Japanese female wrestler Kana (Kanako Urai) was always one of my favorite wrestlers. And when I heard that she was going to the WWE...I was a bit worried about that. The WWE has a habit of ruining great talent. But so far Kana, as Asuka, has done really well. She even won the NXT Women's Championship. I thought it was cool that Dave Meltzer said that Kana/Asuka "may be the best worker in WWE, man or woman".
Going back into the past we have Keiko Nakano aka as Bull Nakano. Bull was born on January 8, 1968 in Kawaguchi, Saitama, Japan. She started wrestling in All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling (AJW) wrestling promotion in Japan. But she soon made it over here and competed in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL in Mexico), and became their first World Women's Wrestling Champion. Then she went to the World Wrestling Federation (then WWF) and won the WWF Women's Championship. Then Bull went to World Championship Wrestling (WCW). She's retired from wrestling now but is a pro golfer who now competes in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).
Here is a young lady that is a bit different than the others on this list. She is Alydia Abdul Wahab aka "Scarlet Lyd" a Malaysian pro wrestler that works for Malaysia Pro Wrestling (MyPW), "Malaysia's first and only pro wrestling organization." Scarlet's finishing move is a variation of AJ Styles' Styles Clash, the Scarlett Letter.
Io Shirai started out wrestling with her sister Mio Shirai as the Purple Thunder Sisters. But she has gone on to make quite a name for herself. Io has wrestled for every major promotion in Japan and spent almost five years in Mexico wrestling there. She has also worked for Lucha Underground as well. And there is a rumor that she has been approached by the WWE, which is only fitting since she and Kana (Asuka), along with Mio, were both once part of a trio called Triple Tails.

I think Mia Yim must be added to this discussion. Mia is half Korean and half black. She has been wrestling for 11 months, but with her athleticism and martial arts kicking style, she fits into the tradition of Asian women in USA wreslting.
