”How about if we put these on you?”
It’s actually pretty amazing how prevalent cram schools are in Japan. Just about every suburban neighborhood has at least one, and in many communities there are more cram schools than standard elementary, middle, or high schools.
The advantages to sending your kid to cram school are, ostensibly, unique teaching strategies and more attention from teachers due to smaller class sizes or, often, one-on-one lessons . Unfortunately, those aspects also allowed one cram school teacher to take advantage of one of his students in a shocking way.
On the afternoon of Sunday, November 17, 62-year-old Koji Ito , who’s also the manager of the Heisei Shingakkai cram school in Nara City’s Fujinokidai neighborhood, was teaching a one-on-one lesson to a female student (the girl’s age, due to a quirk of Japanese vocabulary, has been reported as “between 10 and 19”). At some point during the lesson, Ito said “How about if we put these on you?” and produced three dog collars . He put one around the girl’s neck and one on each of her ankles, connecting them each to a leash . He then went back to teaching the lesson, leaving her hands free so that she could take notes or complete practice problems.
The girl was not injured, and it’s unclear whether Ito used physical force or psychological intimidation to pressure the girl into wearing the collars. Once he had her on the leashes, he forbade her from leaving the classroom, where she remained from roughly 1 to 4:20 p.m. before being released from the restraining devices and allowed to go home.
On November 20, the girl and her parents notified the police of what had taken place, and on Tuesday, Ito was arrested by officers from the Nara Prefectural Police’s Nishi Precinct. “All of those are things I did,” Ito replied to the accusations. “There is no mistake.”
Making the situation even more disturbing is that Shingakai provides instruction for students as young as elementary school, as well as those in middle and high school, meaning Ito had no shortage of naive, easily coerced targets, and so there may be other victims who haven’t come forward yet. The police are currently investigating Ito’s methods and motives, although in the case of the latter, it’s not going to take world-class detective work to determine that he gets his jollies in a very perverse way.

A Florida substitute teacher was busted for having sex with a teenage student who allegedly shared one of their trysts in a Snapchat video, law enforcement officials said.
Ayanna Davis, 20, a substitute English teacher at Lakeland High School, was arrested on Friday after she admitted to having unprotected sex with the student four times — twice at her house and twice at the victim’s house, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release .
Davis’ admission matched with statements made by the victim, whose exact age wasn’t disclosed but was listed in the release as 16 years old or younger .
Authorities launched a probe of the teacher on Dec. 3, after a student informed the school’s resource officer that a Snapchat video was circulating that showed Davis having sex with a student. The video was reportedly shown to a large group of the school’s football team.
Law enforcement officials have not yet been able to view the video, but are working on tracking it down.
“I know it’s out there someplace,” Sheriff Grady Judd told WFLA .
After her interview with police, Davis was charged by the sheriff’s office with two counts of sexual battery by custodian and offenses against students by an authority figure. She additionally was charged with two additional counts of sexual battery by the Lakeland Police Department.
“This is a clear violation of sexual battery laws. She was in a position of influence over the victim, and she took advantage of that for her own twisted pleasure,” Judd said.
She made her first court appearance on Dec. 11, when a $60,000 bond was ordered for all five charges. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 10, 2022.
According to officials, Davis is not a Polk County Public Schools employee, but served at Lakeland High School as a substitute teacher through staffing company Kelly Education Services.
The company has been instructed that Davis is no longer able to work in any Polk County public schools, officials said.
“We expect substitute teachers to uphold the same high standards of conduct and professionalism as our full-time educators,” said Superintendent Frederick Heid in a statement . “The charges against this person are disgraceful and a complete violation of the trust that teachers build with their students. There is no room in our schools for this type of conduct.”
The Polk County school district changed its policy in October permitting anyone 20 years old or older with a high school or GED diploma to be a substitute teacher, according to WFLA.

A school teacher could face criminal charges after footage emerged allegedly showing him beating a terrified young girl in his classroom.
The horrifying video, which captures the student's loud screams during the alleged attack, has gone viral after it was posted on YouTube.

KwaZulu-Natal education department today confirmed it was investigating a series of serious allegations against the teachers.
Witnesses claim the teacher filmed apparently beating the girl first beat a scared student with a cane before turning his attention to the second child.
The teenager, realising she was about to be badly beaten, was filmed apparently trying to escape, only to be dragged back by the teacher.
In fear, it is claimed that she pushed him away, enraging him more, and in the ensuing tussle he pulled off her school jersey.
It is alleged he then lashed out at least six times as hard as he physically could as the girl screamed out in pain, with the cane repeatedly lashing into her flesh.
The girl can be heard screaming in the footage with each whack, before escaping into the corridor.
Many of her school pals are heard laughing and jeering. Corporal punishment in the classroom was banned across South Africa 20 years ago.
The beating is alleged to have happened at the Umdlamfe High School in KwaZulu-Natal province, where the video is claimed to have been shot by another pupil.
The Department of Education in KZN strongly condemned the actions of the teacher and said he has received a letter formally suspending him pending a full investigation.
KZN education spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa told TimesLIVE: “The educator that is seen in a video brutally beating a learner will receive a suspension letter.
“We will be taking harsh action against the perpetrator. We want to send a clear message that corporal punishment will not be tolerated in our schools and learning facilities.
“Despite it being banned since 1997, some teachers in South African schools continue to dish out corporal punishment often for every day offences and it is not allowed”.
It is not known whether any children were injured.
The video emerged just three weeks after two other videos were posted on YouTube taken by pupils of teachers allegedly handing out savage beatings to pupils in the classroom.
In the first a school mistress appears to be laughing as she takes a wooden cane to the back of a terrified young girl forcing her to sit still as she brutally punishes her back.
The girl was in agony and screaming hysterically, but the teacher appeared to be shown calmly rearranging her in the seat so she can get a clear shot for the next whack of the cane on her back.
Seven times the cane is shown being brought down across her back causing serious pain that will leave bright red welts on her back for at least ten days and cause severe bruising.
The video moves onto another clip where a schoolmaster slashes down four times brutally on a schoolboy's hand at the front of the class in front of the blackboard.
Both schools are believed to be in KZN and the spokesperson Mr Mthethwa confirmed an investigation was on to find the schools concerned and find the teachers responsible.
He said: “Children have the right to be free of all forms of violence, to enjoy their education, and not to be treated or punished in a cruel, inhumane and degrading way.
“We are working round the clock to identify the schools involved and will take strong action when we find them”.
The KwaZulu-Natal education department said seven teachers would be suspended today for allegations ranging from raping pupils to assaulting them in the classroom.
National education department spokesman Elijah Mhlanga said in a WhatsApp message to journalists: "We have prepared letters of suspension to be served on the implicated persons"
KZN spokesman Muzi Mahlambi added:"The KZN department of education will this morning hand deliver the suspension letters of educators in King Cetshwayo district who are alleged to have sexually abused learners from the following schools: Zithume‚ Zinqobele‚ Manqamu and Dlangezwa."

A PERVY primary school teacher ordered girls as young as eight to do handstands so their skirts fell down and made jokes about them, a court heard.
He denies 14 charges of indecently assaulting three female pupils aged between eight and 10 at Gayton Junior School in Derby in the 1970s.
The charges range from touching a girl's breasts, flicking an under-13's knickers, slapping female pupils' bottoms and feeling their inner thigh.
On Friday at Derby Crown Court one of his alleged victims told prosecutor Mark Watson the Year 2 teacher would flick the elastic of her top.
The former pupil, who cannot be named, recalled events of her time at the school in 1978 and said: "I was really quite scared of Mr Kilgour.
"He seemed to be stern and a little bit sarcastic. He would tell the students off and shouted at them. He could be quite belittling.
"There were times when he used to do playground duty.
"When we used to do handstands against the wall and our skirts would be down he would stand there and make jokey comments.
"I can't remember what he said but he always seemed to be there. As I got older in the school I would see him doing the same to younger girls."
Prosecutor Mark Watson asked whether she had ever witnessed Kilgour physically touching a student.
She said: "I used to see him get a ruler and smack girls on the bottom - I wouldn't say it looked like punishment, it wasn't hard, it was sort of a tap.
"I think he treated the girls differently to how he treated the boys.
"I was only eight years old but he did seem to be shouting at boys but was quite jokey with the girls."
The witness described how she said he once pulled at the elasticated neckline of her top.
