With warm, sunny weather year-round and miles of pristine beaches, it’s only natural to want to bare a little more skin when you’re in Greater Miami. Topless sunbathing isn't uncommon on South Beach , in large part because of the melting pot of international visitors and residents. However, if you want to go truly au naturel, Haulover Beach is your place. Following these few guidelines will help make for a perfect day in the sun for you and your fellow beach-goers.
If you have an exhibitionist streak or you simply want to eliminate tan lines altogether, there’s a welcoming stretch of sand at Haulover Beach that’s clothing optional. Located just north of Bal Harbour across a small causeway and inlet, Haulover Park and Beach, which is known for being especially welcoming to the LGBTQ community , spans approximately 1.5 miles nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The northernmost half-mile of Haulover Beach is designated clothing optional.
In addition to the aquamarine ocean and white sandy beach, you’ll also find shaded picnic facilities, concession stands, beach chair rentals and sand dunes. This part of the beach is also popular among surfers, thanks to the waves produced by the inlet.
Haulover’s nude beach is welcoming to people of all walks of life and often sees as many as 7,000 people on its sands in a single day. Since it’s simply clothing optional, it’s also welcoming to anyone in your party who prefers to keep their swimsuit on.
Whether you’re a committed nudist or a curious first-timer, you should be aware of the social etiquette and expectations that come with a day at a nude beach. For many, it’s a time to unwind with an expectation of reasonable privacy. A good rule of thumb is to keep a friendly distance from your fellow nude sunbathers and be mindful of everyone’s comfort levels.
Be courteous of your fellow sunbathers and do not take pictures, gawk or do anything that would make anyone feel uncomfortable. A comfy beach towel is even more important at a nude beach. From lying on the sand to sitting on public benches, always put a towel between your body and any surface.
Lewd behavior of any sort at any of Miami’s beaches, clothing-optional or not, is against the law, and violators will be subject to arrest.

Video posted on the World Star Hip Hop website is causing a stir. A woman is seen taking her clothes off in the middle of the day at the Johnny Rockets in the 700 block of Ocean Drive.
After a provocative dance, the woman ends up nude on a table where she is covered in water and ketchup before a restaurant worker breaks it all up and tells the woman she needs to leave.
Johnny Rockets contacted police saying more than $400 worth of damage was done.
Mitch Novick, owner of the Sherbrooke Hotel, is part of a task force of business owners who want the fun to continue on South Beach, but in a responsible way. He believes the video is an indication of how things get out of control.
"It's a carnival-like circus, pretty much 24 hours a day, and I am hoping the city can take some control of it," Novick said.
"We're trying to get the bad apples there, some of the businesses that perhaps engage and let people get away with too much. We are trying to encourage them to adopt model behavior," said Jimmy Morales, Miami Beach City Manager.
Morales told NBC 6 the city wants the fun to carry on in the right way and is serious about making sure that happens, "In the most recent budget, the commission dedicated three additional code officers to deal with quality of life issues."
Novick's biggest complaint is about the noise and that nothing is done to control it. Morales said Miami Beach Police are being very proactive.
"They are putting a lot of attention and details down there. Every night we are making major busts, where it's drugs or prostitution, some of the stuff that's going on down there the businesses were complaining about," Morales said.
Police said they are making progress on their investigation, while Johnny Rockets had no comment.
As a concrete example, Morales pointed to the change in the liquor law, where after 2 a.m. there is no drinking outside at the establishments.
