If you haven’t thought about getting your hair bobbed, one glance at Ashley Jensen’s new look will have you speed-dialling your hairdresser. Posing for photos in the garden of a west London studio, the Scottish actress, who made her name as Ricky Gervais’s hapless-yet-hilarious sidekick Maggie in Extras , looks dazzling.
Somewhere between Debbie Harry and ’80s TV detective Harriet Makepeace, her cut is sexy but sophisticated, the blunt fringe framing her blue eyes.
Dressed in an ankle-length silk dress, the 46-year-old is the picture of elegance, but as soon as the camera stops, she starts cracking jokes in that instantly familiar Borders accent that sounds as warm as buttered toast.
Till now, that soft-yet-knowing quality has made her the voice of everything from Embarrassing Bodies to Bryony in Arthur Christmas.
But after letting her career take a back seat for three years to spend more time with her son Frankie, now six, Ashley is returning in less cosy roles, appearing last year as the neurotic Fran in Channel 4 sitcom Catastrophe, and then in the dystopian film The Lobster , alongside Colin Farrell.
It turns out the only person who doesn’t like Ashley’s new look is Frankie. ‘I came home and he said, “Where has all your hair gone, Mummy?” But then, he once saw a picture of me all dressed up with make-up on for an awards ceremony and said, “Why have you got two black eyes?”’
When I last met Ashley four years ago, she had just returned from six years in LA starring in Ugly Betty and it looked like she had firmly left her Hollywood glamour days behind her.
Our interview took place in a rehearsal studio in the middle of a south London council estate, where she was preparing to appear in Alan Ayckbourn’s A Chorus of Disapproval.
She was excited to return to her theatrical roots after being immersed in the world of American TV. ‘I don’t remember having serious conversations on Ugly Betty… it feels like coming back to a place where I had left off,’ she said at the time. But now, looking back, she admits she found the transition back to the UK tough.
‘In retrospect, it was bloody hard work. We’d just moved, Frankie [then two] wasn’t sleeping through the night, and I underestimated the sheer amount of work involved in theatre.’
Ashley, who’s been married to fellow actor Terence Beesley for nine years, had Frankie while the couple were living in LA. When the Ayckbourn run was over, she decided it was time to move out of London and things easier career-wise. Looking for somewhere they could have more space, they ended up in Bath.
‘We drew a circle of places that were around an hour from London. I quite like being around beautiful architecture, things that look nice and people who are happy. And who are always happy? Tourists! Because they are on their holidays.
‘If I hadn’t lived in America, I would have been more reticent to move somewhere unknown but because I didn’t know anybody when I went to America, it didn’t frighten me. I knew I could do it again.’
Her striking new look has been prompted by her eponymous role in Agatha Raisin, adapted from MC Beaton’s phenomenally popular novels about a London publicist who accidentally turns Cotswold detective.
After a successful one-off in 2014, Sky commissioned an eight-part series, which was filmed last summer near Ashley’s home. ‘This role felt like it just came from heaven,’ she says. ‘I got to sleep in my own bed every night.’
Agatha Raisin’s pencil skirts, high heels and bright lipstick, plus the bob courtesy of celebrity hairdresser Paul Edmonds, were a way of giving her character a signature look. ‘In the way that Colombo had his raincoat and Sarah Lund [in The Killing] had the jumper, we wanted to create a very physical identity for Agatha.
‘She is a highly successful woman so it needed to look like she could spend money on herself. And even though she’s in the countryside, she still looks very “London” with this very sharp silhouette.’
The show hits the sweet spot of an easy-on-the-eye Country Living fantasy mixed with a whoddunit and some wry comedy. Spending her time trying to seduce handsome men in the village or staggering across fields in her heels in pursuit of a murderer, Agatha could have easily tipped into Absolutely Fabulous territory. But Ashley, playing Agatha younger than she is in Beaton’s books, avoids turning her into a cartoon character.
‘Agatha’s make-up is like armour – to cover her vulnerability as she tries to make this new life in the countryside. You see her looking all glamorous but then you also see her on her own with her cat, drinking too much wine, being a terrible cook and having another disastrous relationship.
‘It’s great playing this woman in her 40s with all these different sides. She can be unlikeable and my eyebrow was often raised beneath my fringe, but she is still somebody you want to go back to.’
For Ashley, the role was both a new challenge and the chance to return to some of the aesthetics she enjoyed on Ugly Betty. ‘Agatha Raisin is similar to Ugly Betty or Glee in that everything is little bit heightened and bright and colourful.’
Agatha is a world apart from the desperate singleton character, Biscuit Lady, Ashley played in The Lobster, a role that required her to appear hunched over in not very flattering nude-coloured undies. ‘Ben Whishaw and Colin Farrell were just rolling around with laughter. I must be the first woman to strip off in front of Colin and get a laugh as a response.
'But then again, I must be the only woman who has laughed when he stripped off in front of me,’ she chuckles, remembering the amount of weight Farrell piled on for the role. ‘He was on liquid Häagen-Dazs – melting the ice cream and drinking it like smoothies.’
A quiet confidence and a faith in happy accidents seem to have characterised much of Ashley’s career. Growing up in the small town of Annan in south-west Scotland, raised by a single mum, Margaret, she was determined to be an actress from the age of eight and loved to make people laugh.
‘I was obsessed with Frank Spencer. I think I managed to smuggle a beret on to every character I played.’ She remembers her mum making her audition for the National Youth Theatre and, when she had won a place, allowed her – aged 15 – to travel to London on her own for rehearsals.
‘Looking back now, that feels like such a major thing. That my mum was brave enough to allow me to do that meant that I had confidence in myself.’
After a theatre degree at Queen Mary University in Edinburgh, Ashley spent 15 years working on the stage and getting small parts in shows like EastEnders and Clocking Off.
Rather then yearning for a big break, she says she was happy with her life as a jobbing actress. ‘I thought of myself as successful because I was supporting myself through acting. That’s all I wanted to do.’
Her career trajectory changed overnight when she landed the role of Maggie in Extras in 2005, quickly followed a year later when, while on holiday in LA, she ended up being cast in Ugly Betty.
It was an accelerated period of what Ashley calls ‘getting over myself. The first day I turned up on set to film Extras I was opposite Samuel L Jackson. I had to lose any inhibitions I had really quickly.’
Moving to LA in 2007, she says she found herself immune to the much higher beauty standards in American TV. ‘Luckily, I have never felt self-conscious,’ she says.
‘I think I went to LA when I was too old, and I was too Scottish to not have my feet quite firmly on the ground. I have never been the best-looking girl in the room. I have always shambled about the middle and in comedy you can get away with that.’
While she loved the weather and the space in LA, she never stopped feeling like an outsider. ‘I always felt fraudulent that I was there. I felt like the slightly dirty second cousin, and that I got there by default. Mind you, I revelled in that position in a way.’
In 2009, she left Ugly Betty to appear in another US comedy, Accidentally on Purpose, but when that wasn’t recommissioned, she felt the time was right to return to the UK. ‘When you get to a level of fame, it is quite tricky. I wanted to remove myself from that pressure.
'I didn’t wait all that time to have a son and then have somebody else bring him up. I was really lucky to be able to make that choice to spend that time with him and be financially secure enough to take a bit of back seat, rather than thinking, “I have to be in the next Golden Globe-winning show.”’
As she describes trawling Bath’s charity shops to make Frankie dressing-up outfits, it’s clear that she’s an adoring mum, but she found her maternal instinct also helped her step into a bigger acting role.
‘I’d guested and supported enough stuff that I felt ready to hold a show. I think it is the responsibility of the lead character to be the “mum”. I came from a place as a supporting actress where I would be on set a day here and there, and that is really scary.
'You are not going to do your best work because you are too frightened to make eye contact and it doesn’t become a team thing. So on Agatha Raisin I made sure everyone had a good time. It was a nice family atmosphere, with everyone looking out for each other.’
It’s inspiring to see someone as grounded as Ashley having her moment in the sun – and really enjoying it. ‘In America, everyone had a five-year plan but I have never had a plan. I don’t even know what I am doing tomorrow. I don’t worry about the future. They will always need someone to play the old ladies with wrinkles.’
‘Agatha Raisin’ is on Sky 1 at 9pm on 7 June
