Vienna, date — Asfinag revealed a digital toll framework that the company says will standardize charges across key European corridors, trimming admin overhead for drivers and freight operators alike. Dubbed Unity Toll, the system ties together on-board units, mobile apps, and a centralized cross-border billing network, enabling a single account to cover journeys from Austria through neighboring countries and beyond.

The platform relies on GNSS-based tolling and real-time traffic data to set dynamic prices, with discounts for low-emission vehicles and off-peak travel. There are no traditional toll booths; instead, vehicles are charged automatically as they traverse marked corridors, while drivers can monitor costs and receipts in a unified dashboard. Officials emphasize privacy protections and transparent billing, with separate layers for personal and commercial use.

'We’re building the backbone for a connected European road network,' said Asfinag CEO Lieselotte Berger. 'Unity Toll simplifies travel, reduces queue times at borders, and supports smarter logistics.' A logistics-industry representative added that a single billing standard could save fleets millions in administrative costs yearly.

Rollout will begin in Austria and select neighboring routes, expanding in phases to Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia over the next three years. If successful, the system could pave the way for wider interoperability among European toll schemes and reshape how long-haul transport operates on continental highways.
