An Alumni C72 Conversation

Dear Warbi,

Thank you for the question and the heads up. Sometimes I’m thoroughly subdued by the immensity of my fears and thoughts as I compare the realisations that confronts me and the Zahid is a terrorist accusation I sometimes think people think of me.

Then I looked back at the “education” I received over my life time, formal and informal, natural and academic, exams and lifetime, and I thank Allah for the taqdir He has put me through.

During my life time I was drenched in western education, but later showered and cleansed in fiqh and muamalat, and Islamic worldviews from an Islamic university.

I was versant in Keynes as am I now a champion of AlAttas views, carrying them perhaps far beyond the philosophical base he started it off with.

I read in conventional economics, as I matured into Islamic Economics as I matured further that Islamic Economics built by the universities while brilliant still smells of a western die it was cooked in.

Similarly I had a short stint in conventional banking before spending a life time in Islamic banking, and now in the twilight of my years in Monetary Reform, in particular Islamic Monetary Reform.

The forced induced birth of Islamic banking into a thoroughly conventional or rather purely ribafied conventional financial world, produced pioneering pioneers, who are later ridiculed for their efforts, for failing to first deliver the pristine Shariah compliant environment Islamic banking demands before it can be introduce into.

Yes bro, this is what it is all about. The communal failure to Tabbayyun our environment, history, our life systems, our education, our consequential values, and ultimately our role in life. Are we a Khalifhtul Ardh, or a Brown Sahib?

Whilst we educate ourselves in Ugama, self education, pet Ustaz, masjid daily ceramah or other means; we can hardly replace the Islamic education we were denied.

Khalifahtul Ardh must be versant with Quranic Arabic, thoroughly versant with Quran and Sunnah before they master worldly knowledge guided by the Science and Technology of the Quran, and the divine philosophical guidance of the Sunnah.

We should have been educated the way Ibnu Sina, AlKhawarizmi, Al Jabir Ibn Hayyan, Ibnu Bajjah, AlKaraji and Ibnu Khaldun, were taught, to name a few.

Masters of Quran and Sunnah Cum Masters of Worldly Knowledge

Father of Medicine, Father of AlGorithms/Algebra, Father of Chemistry, Father of Third Law of Motion, Father of Calculus and Father of Economics, respectively.

But no, we chose the Education System from people who hated religion so much they demanded religion be confined to Sunday mornings while they teach in universities and schools the Creator do not exist, and if you want religion we will provide a totally separate education system that will create Priests.

We are Muslims, the Prophet SAW said mafhum, “I leave to you, two things and you will not be lost as long as you hold closely to them, which is Quran and Sunnah.” (HR Malik).

No, overawed by the omputih we chose their education system. Now we hear in You tubes how bad the economic system is, and what it should now be. Conventional solutions to Conventional failures of conventional systems'

We learnt that now the super rich control the distribution of wealth via specific laws passed to enable this monopoly power to them.

Economics based on Quran and Sunnah demands we replace Profit Maximisation with Human Welfare Maximisation. But we are too besotted with Western Economics to even consider its implementation.

And if we Tabbayun further we find an economic system that hinges on the National Riba Rate.

We have a Central Bank that every so often will tell the umat what the current National Riba Rate is.

And the whole nation discusses and comments on this movement of riba rate as if we are talking of a weather forecast for tomorrow.

Whereas this morning in the Subuh prayers, the Imam or us in individual prayers read Surah AlBaqarah 279 about Allah SWT and His Rasul declaring War on the practitioners of riba.

This ayat does not apply to us? How do we answer in the hereafter in our trial in Mahsyar? Everybody is not afraid of that ayat? So we are with them? We belong to that group?

We have no choice but to live with Riba because our Kerajaan has not changed it?

What does the Hadith say about obeyance to Leaders? Blind obedience?! Does not the Hadith say “Obey your leaders as long as it is not sinful; disobey him if he asks you to do something sinful”.

But what can I do, I am just one member of the umat?

Does Allah reward you only when you are successful? Or He rewards you on the beginning your effort?

This thing is not important to me. Na’udzubillah! And ayat Quran is not important to you?

We have no alternative. Really?! Have you truly tabayyun and checked?

There are people who say it can be done! Support them! Show your proofs that you hate Riba in your trial in the hereafter. At the very least you must show hatred for sin.

Tabbayun, bro Warbi, or the communal lack of it, is the issue.

We are not demanded to show success of our fight against riba by tomorrow.

We are demanded to commence by showing hatred, and try to support all efforts to fight riba.

Begin with Tabayyun. Tabbayyun our environment, our history, our life systems, our education, our current consequential values, and ultimately our true role in life, to be the Khalifahtul Ardh we are commanded to be. Biiznillah. In sya Allah.
