Is anyone else bothered that they gave the role of Art3mis to an actress that doesn't have the same body type as the character in the book? Olivia Cooke is a really talented actress, but she can't act rubenesque (in press pictures she still looks like the waif she is).
Art3mis' avatar being close to her real body type says something important about her character, especially when most other avatars adhere to modern beauty standards. Wade himself should be a bit chunkier (at least at the start of the movie), but I don't think that's happening either.
I know this is Hollywood, but surely Spielberg had a say in this. Not all of the Goonies looked like Josh Brolin. All of the RPO characters stay in and eat junk food, why are they attractive and slim?
I'm more concerned that in the trailer she looks like she's being all girly nice to him. Arty would never have put her hand on his and looked lovingly into his eyes. She would have smacked him in the face.

By the book Wade was "chunckier" earlier but slimmed up as time went on and even bulked up after he went into isolation.
But to your point, yes, I was hoping for someone a little bit more curvy. And I don't mean Jessica Rabbit, 1996 Lara Croft curvy. I mean rounded, willing to eat two slices of pizza, borderline voluptuous so much as 168 lbs would complement a 5'7" frame.
As we mentioned in one of our earlier episodes, I imagined someone like Michelle Meyrink (Jordan from 'Real Genius') or a Selma Blair (Cecile from 'Cruel Intentions').
Great eyes, realistic figures, adorable personalities that match the geek of Art3mis. But I am withholding judgement until I see how they match the character to Olivia Cooke.
Personally, I don't mind, that the actress is not "Rubenesque". It often happens, that actors look different from their book counterparts and it is not bad at all, because let's be honest - in this case, it is not important to the story.
However! What I do mind (and it is essential part to Art3mis), is that from what I've seen in the trailers, her avatar is not really realistic or a copy of her real life appearence. It's exactly what it is not supposed to be according to the book - super hot, extremely thin,... just made to look the best it can.
What is clear from Spielberg’s approach, the trailers and an interview with Janusz Kaminski (Spielberg’s cinematographer) about The Post where he briefly talks about RPO is that they took a specific direction for the way the Oasis and the avatars look ie it looks pretty realistic in a way but you can tell you’re in a virtual world, Kaminski mentioned that pixelated effect kinda on Parzival’s face and the other avatars for example. I think you can still tell from what we see or Art3mis (her removing her helmet in a tv spot, her at Og’s party, etc) that she does look like Olivia but in an exaggerated way
Cline constantly misuses Reubenesqe, I'm pretty sure his misuse is a reference to The Pick-Up Artist, where RDJ refers to Molly Ringwald as Reubenesqe.
I feel like Ariel Winter would've been a good choice for Art3mis. Short and curvy, very pretty.
Since it seems the main theme of the book was reality is where one needs to be, not on a computer game, they should have definitely played to actual body type. The movie looks like it had glamorized avatars playing even more glamorized avatars vs. everyday people with avatars. Kind of loses its best lesson on looking past people’s appearance.
I think Cline wrote the screenplay and had a lot of input, similar to J.S.A. Corey with Syfy channel’s The Expanse. In the Expanse they changed it a LOT from the books, some to make it fit the different medium but some changes the authors wanted to make, changing some storylines.
Did anyone expect them to go with overweight actors?! I’m sure Steven just cast the actors he wanted and that’s just it, it’ll be heavily different, that’s a given and that’s cool. About Art3mis supposedly acting unlike the book counterpart: it’s clear from the trailers they’re introducing her real life self much earlier in the story, which makes sense, this is a film, you can’t do it the same way the book does. If you want an actual emotional connection with those characters, you have to do that, and not lose sight of the real life world in relation to the Oasis, that’s Steven probably taking the book as a blueprint, then making it better or punching up some aspects.
Cline has been very criticized for his handling of Art3mis, which I guess has some merits although it doesn’t bother me. Making her a probably more multi dimensional character in the film is going to pay off (and if she truly leads some kind of rebellion, it’s about giving her some agency and not just her being the object of Wade’s desire) and lord knows Spielberg is a masterful storyteller. I love the book but I’m sure he’s going to elevate the material
I'm with you 95%. I'm just a bit jaded in thinking they started with a short list that didn't include anyone remotely in the ball park of what is a fairly normal body type.

Yes. It's a young adult book and a huge point of the book is look beyond appearance.
And non-pretty actors and actresses can and do make powerful emotional connections in film.
Hope Spielberg didn't lose this key theme of the story.

Expect? No, but certainly hope. Every movie that conforms to the Hollywood standard of "even slightly overweight people only exist as pathetic comic relief" makes life a little worse, and a book that explicitly breaks that convention would be a perfect time for a movie to be braver.
