Army Updates Combat Fitness Test Standards

U.S. Army Introduces Overhauled Combat Fitness Test to Better Prepare Soldiers for Modern Battlefield

Fort Benning, GA — October 10, 2024

The U.S. Army has rolled out a revamped version of its Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), designed to more accurately assess soldiers' physical readiness for the demands of modern warfare. The updated test, which replaces the previous six-event format, includes new exercises aimed at improving endurance, strength, and tactical mobility.

Key Changes to the ACFT

The new ACFT, now in its third iteration since its initial introduction in 2019, focuses on combat-related tasks while addressing feedback from soldiers across all military occupational specialties (MOS). Major updates include:

Replaced the Leg Tuck with a Climbing Simulator – To better mimic obstacles soldiers face in the field, the controversial leg tuck event has been swapped for a rope-and-wall climbing station.

Added a Loaded Sprint-Carry – Soldiers must now sprint 50 meters while carrying a 40-pound sandbag, testing speed under combat load.

Modified Deadlift Standards – Gender-neutral scoring remains, but weight increments have been adjusted to reduce injury risk.

Extended Endurance March – A new 5-mile timed ruck march with 35 pounds replaces the previous 2-mile run, emphasizing long-range mission readiness.

Why the Changes?

Brigadier General Lisa Carter, head of Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), explained, *'The battlefield is evolving, and so must our fitness standards. These updates ensure soldiers are prepared not just for strength, but for sustained operations in high-intensity conflicts.'*

The adjustments come after years of debate over the ACFT’s fairness and effectiveness, particularly for non-combat roles. The new version aims to balance combat readiness with practical applicability for all soldiers.

Soldiers React

Initial feedback has been mixed. Some troops praise the changes for better simulating real-world conditions, while others worry about the increased difficulty. 'The ruck march is no joke, but it makes sense—we’re not just running two miles in a warzone,' said Sergeant Marcus Rivera, an infantryman at Fort Bragg.

Implementation Timeline

The updated ACFT will enter a six-month trial phase before full adoption in 2025. Units will receive new training protocols to help soldiers adapt.

As the Army continues refining its fitness standards, one thing is clear: the emphasis is on preparing troops not just to pass a test, but to survive and win in combat.
