Ariel Winter admits that she "had a hard time finding confidence" as she grew into a young woman while on Modern Family -- but that's all changed.
The 18-year-old actress poses topless in unretouched photos for SELF , and opens up about how she came to accept her curves.
"Growing up in the spotlight was quite possibly the worst for my self-esteem," she says. "When I started [ Modern Family ], I had a completely different body than what happened overnight at 12 years old. I was stick thin, I had no chest, I had no butt -- I had nothing. I was totally flat, and I was so sad about it. Then automatically, overnight, my body changed drastically. I was a D cup and had a bigger butt, and my waist was expanding. Everything was getting bigger. I automatically got this hate and judgment online."
Winter says it was her co-star, Sofia Vergara, that helped her come to accept her body transformation. "I had a great role model in Sofia growing up, with her being a curvy woman that was super proud of who she was and what she looked like,” she shares. “[Sofia] could see that I was struggling a little bit with how to deal with my body, and was always trying to give me advice, like, ‘Here are some brands that would look good on our body type,’ or ‘Wear whatever you want, and feel good about yourself.’”
Winter also credits her older sister, Shanelle Workman, whom she lives with, for encouraging her to be comfortable in her own skin. “I look up to her so much," she gushes. "I would listen to her talk to me, saying, ‘It doesn’t matter what other people think. You are who you are. It’s not going to change. Love yourself for who you are. People are going to hate regardless of what you do. You could conform to everything they say, and they’re still going to find something to pick. Or you could be yourself and be happy and not listen to what they say.’”
Winter decided to get a breast reduction when she was 17 -- her surgical scar can be seen in the photos for SELF -- and since then, has been outspoken on social media about loving one's body. "I think people make a lot of judgments about me based on what I wear and all the things that I do," she explains. "They kind of glorify and objectify a lot of the things that I do, and I wish people would just see me as the normal 18-year-old that I am. I’m doing the same things that everybody my age is doing."
When speaking to ET , Winter further defended the risque selfies she shares on Instagram and Snapchat. "Everybody is so hyped up on the fact that I post photos where my butt's out. It's a butt. Everyone has a butt," she said. "It's like, 'Let me live! I'm enjoying my life, you're enjoying your life, you should be posting your butt if you like it, too!'"

Ariel Winter rose to fame playing Alex Dunphy on Modern Family , which is currently in its 47th season on ABC.
(We kid, of course, but seriously — remember when shows used to end?)
Anyway, in the several decades since the show premiered, Ariel has managed to eclipse the series and escape the curse of the washed-up child star.
That’s partially due to her work in a wide array of film and television projects.
And of course, Ariel’s candid comments about her difficult childhood and her decision to undergo breast reduction surgery have endeared her to millions who have faced similar struggles.
But if we’re being completely honest, the real reason that Ariel has so flawlessly made the leap from ensemble actor to breakout star is her social media presence.
Yes, that’s a euphemistic way of saying people really seem to enjoy Ariel Winter bikini photos — but she owes her popularity to much more than just her racy selfies.
Ariel is unashamed to bare all in much more important ways than showing off her figure.
Take her cover shoot for the new issue of Pulse Spikes magazine.
The extreme close-up image features an unretouched Ariel sporting minimal makeup.
The intention, of course, is to highlight not only Ariel’s natural beauty, but also her bravery.
Inside the mag, fans will find an interview that’s every bit as revealing as the photo.
“It was definitely more of a difficult process for me,” says the actress, who turned 21 last week.
“It is just something you think about like, ‘Oh, well I am going to be photographed in this setting. Oh no, what if I look weird? I got a pimple today!’ But it was nice to be able to do that.”
Ariel says she struggled with her self-image for years, and her anxiety was exacerbated by growing up in the spotlight.
She says it’s only in recent years that she came to the realization that obsessing over the perceptions of others is a sure path to chronic anxiety.
“I realized that it didn’t matter… the only person that matters is me because I am the only one who has to live with me,” she tells Pulse Spikes.
“Taking time to think about that and understand what is going on and why you feel that way, instead of brushing it aside, is important. Why live hating yourself when there is no real reason to?”
The interview serves as a reminder that its Ariel’s forthright demeanor more than her famous figure that’s made her a household name.
That said, she’d probably leave a few million fans disappointed if she stopped documenting her trips to the beach.

It was a tough finale for both the cast and fans, as Modern Family finally came to an end. That’s the last we’ll see of the dynamic duo of Sarah Hyland and Ariel Winter, at least for now. Who knows, maybe one day the show might make a return?
Winter has her entire career ahead still in her early 20s. Surreal to think that she was on the show for half her life. We’re excited to see what she does next. For the time being, fans are keeping up to date with the sitcom stars on platforms like IG, with her posts and stories.

Winter’s four million-plus followers experience a little bit of everything via her IG account. She recently posted a heartbreaking Modern Family photo of the casts’ final day.
However, pics like the one above instantly cheer us all up, showing a different side of the tame character she portrays on Modern Family.
Although the pic is a stunning shot, Winter decides to have a bit of fun in the caption, making a light-hearted joke in relation to the current times and what she’s up to in the photo, “trying to dodge Coronavirus and apparently do a pit check in the second pic?”
Only a select few can make a piece of pizza look that good. Let’s not kid ourselves though, Winter has an insane work ethic when it comes to eating healthy and training hard. She explains how important workouts are with E Online;
"I think working out is really important for your physical health," she said. "I think mental health is really important, but also, if you want to be healthy and while I am not the most excited to put my workout clothes on and go and do that, it is really nice, when you leave, you feel better...I just want to build muscle.”
Despite the fact that she was about to shoot the most emotional scene of her career, she still comes across as a true stunner. Nonetheless, she explains via IG how hard the scene was;
“In just a few hours we will series wrap on @abcmodernfam, and along with everything else, I will be saying goodbye to the trailer I have had for almost a decade. Goodbye trailer! Goodbye Alex plaque!”
She’s enjoying a night out in Vegas – this is a different side of the Modern Family star, one fans of the show might not be accustomed to, but her followers certainly are.
Winter has some fun with the fans during the post, telling them to caption the photo for her.
So what’s next for Winter? Well, according to her recent interview with Fox News, she’s looking forward to changing things up and taking on a different kind of role;
“Alex is a great character but Alex doesn't change a ton... I was a kid as Alex on the show and now I'm an adult as Alex, so it's a little different than the roles I want to play. I don't want to play kid to adult. I want to just play my age now.”
“How it be when one of your family members says “DON’T MOVE LET ME GET A PICTURE OF YOU TWO.”
As if the picture wasn’t hilarious enough, Winter added to it with the caption above, claiming that a family member had to get a photo of herself and the dog. She’s accustomed to the attention but this is just downright hilarious.
It was a splurge day for the Modern Family star as she took to Louis Vuitton. She posed for an IG pic, though little did she know, Winter was actually sitting on a store item;
"The moment you realize you’re about to get kicked out of the Louis Vuitton store for unknowingly sitting on merchandise."
She’s living the glamorous LA lifestyle nowadays, however, it wasn’t always easy for the Modern Family star.
She had a tough relationship with her mother, so much so that she got legally emancipated since the age of 14. According to Winter, her mother would even encourage her to dress provocatively, though Crystal Workman denied the allegations.
She’s dressed in some interesting clothing, topped off with a cowboy hat. It was a celebration for Winter on her 22 nd birthday. She joked around about the effects of her new age;
“Last Tuesday I turned 22! Another year closer to my last limitation of renting a car without issue!”
While on the Ellen Show, Winter was nothing but grateful discussing her time on Modern Family , spending half her life on the show;
“It's been like half my life,' Winter said. 'I'll be 22 when we end the show next year. Honestly, it's so amazing to have a job like this with people that you love for 11 years that you love. The amount of grateful that we all are is ridiculous.”
When Halloween time comes around, Ariel Winter is always ready to turn heads with an excellent costume choice.
Two years ago, she didn’t disappoint with this Pamela Anderson costume; her caption on IG read,” Happy Halloween. #tbt to me as Pamela Anderson for #halloween 2018.” Definitely one of her better costume choices.
She’s playing dress up in the IG photo above.
However, according to Daily Mail , she was playing dress-up for a different reason a day ago, heading out for some groceries in Studio City. She was properly dressed rocking the protective gloves and face mask – a mask that kind of resembled something out of a Hannibal film.
Winter’s having some fun in this IG post. She’s also getting started on some post- Modern Family projects, including Little Audrey.
