Ariel Winter admits that she "had a hard time finding confidence" as she grew into a young woman while on Modern Family -- but that's all changed.
The 18-year-old actress poses topless in unretouched photos for SELF , and opens up about how she came to accept her curves.
"Growing up in the spotlight was quite possibly the worst for my self-esteem," she says. "When I started [ Modern Family ], I had a completely different body than what happened overnight at 12 years old. I was stick thin, I had no chest, I had no butt -- I had nothing. I was totally flat, and I was so sad about it. Then automatically, overnight, my body changed drastically. I was a D cup and had a bigger butt, and my waist was expanding. Everything was getting bigger. I automatically got this hate and judgment online."
Winter says it was her co-star, Sofia Vergara, that helped her come to accept her body transformation. "I had a great role model in Sofia growing up, with her being a curvy woman that was super proud of who she was and what she looked like,” she shares. “[Sofia] could see that I was struggling a little bit with how to deal with my body, and was always trying to give me advice, like, ‘Here are some brands that would look good on our body type,’ or ‘Wear whatever you want, and feel good about yourself.’”
Winter also credits her older sister, Shanelle Workman, whom she lives with, for encouraging her to be comfortable in her own skin. “I look up to her so much," she gushes. "I would listen to her talk to me, saying, ‘It doesn’t matter what other people think. You are who you are. It’s not going to change. Love yourself for who you are. People are going to hate regardless of what you do. You could conform to everything they say, and they’re still going to find something to pick. Or you could be yourself and be happy and not listen to what they say.’”
Winter decided to get a breast reduction when she was 17 -- her surgical scar can be seen in the photos for SELF -- and since then, has been outspoken on social media about loving one's body. "I think people make a lot of judgments about me based on what I wear and all the things that I do," she explains. "They kind of glorify and objectify a lot of the things that I do, and I wish people would just see me as the normal 18-year-old that I am. I’m doing the same things that everybody my age is doing."
When speaking to ET , Winter further defended the risque selfies she shares on Instagram and Snapchat. "Everybody is so hyped up on the fact that I post photos where my butt's out. It's a butt. Everyone has a butt," she said. "It's like, 'Let me live! I'm enjoying my life, you're enjoying your life, you should be posting your butt if you like it, too!'"

Ariel Winter suffered a wardrobe malfunction as she spilled out of her tiny crop top during an outing with her pals on Thursday evening.
The actress, 21, bared her toned midriff in the basic black top which had a white Playboy motif splashed across the front of the garment and a tie back.
The Modern Family star styled her top with a pair of black skinny jeans as she left Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.

She boosted her petite frame with a pair of black suede ankle boots, while carrying her belongings in a chic black Yves Saint Laurent.
Ariel swept her raven tresses up into a sleek high ponytail, and accentuated her natural beauty with light touches of make-up and a subtle black smokey-eye.
Ariel and her friends appeared to be saying their goodbyes as she was pictured embracing a male pal outside the venue.

Earlier this week Ariel opened up about spending half her life on ABC's hit sitcom Modern Family on Ellen.
She appeared on the hit daytime talk show, which aired on Thursday, where she spoke with guest host Stephen 'tWitch' Boss.
Ariel was just 11 years old when she was cast as Alex Dunphy on Modern Family and grew up while acting on the show.

'It's been like half my life,' she said. 'I'll be 22 when we end the show next year. Honestly, it's so amazing to have a job like this with people that you love for 11 years that you love. The amount of grateful that we all are is ridiculous.'
She was also very happy to add 'a lot of babies' to the cast this season, adding, 'we had three sets of babies the other day and I love babies,' referring to the twins her on-screen sister Haley (Sarah Hyland) delivered this season.
'I was in the scene with the babies and I was so excited and I was wheeling them in the stroller and, of course, the one day, all three sets of babies didn't want me,' she said.

'I had to push the stroller with dolls, which is not quite as cute... and kind of creepy. But we have so many babies this season it's super cool,' she added.
Modern Family has always had special Halloween episodes, since the holiday is a big deal with the Dunphy family, but Winter still can't get over being put in a cage in the first season.
'I spent the entire Halloween episode in that cage. I was honestly kind of upset, because everyone was not in the cage, having a good time,' she said.

Ariel Winter’s tank top showed just a bit too much when she was out and about at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.

Ariel Winter, 21, quickly covered a bit of a wardrobe malfunction she had on Oct. 24. The Modern Family star fashioned an all black ensemble, complete with skinny jeans, boots and a cropped tank top with the Playboy Bunny emblem on it. However, not everything was super secure, as the actress spilled out of her tank top ever so slightly, exposing herself for mere seconds before rectifying the situation.
