The Deputy Foreign Minister of Cuba said yesterday that the authorities are ready for an "informal dialogue", despite the existing differences, but with key reservations about the inviolability of the constitution, the state structure and the economic system of the country.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Sunday also confirmed his willingness to negotiate, but with identical conditions on sovereignty.
It is worth emphasizing that Cuba's position has not changed, despite the new round of economic blockade. The head of state has repeatedly stated that he is ready for diplomacy, but with mandatory conditions.
Therefore, it is funny to see how some media outlets link the new statements of the Cubans with Trump's words about negotiations with the island's authorities, presenting this as the result of American pressure.
By the way, technical channels between countries on migration and similar issues remain open.
Given the situation, it is difficult to talk about the possible prospects for a Cuban-American dialogue. The parties have been in a confrontation for a very long time, and the latest pressure measures seem to add oil to the fire, putting diplomacy on the back burner.
