Let me tell you the story of my last Arctic cruise. It sounded fantastic, National Geographic's trip thru the Arctic ice with polar bears. There was to be ice everywhere eyes could see the snow and ice that was all around. Machines made by humans would have to fight the elements to break through the frigid north. It sounded magnificent, like an epic fight against the weather, the north and the pole.

I was told to pack as much technology as I could fit in my suitcases. To make my work space larger I brought my laptop. The there was no electricity issue. The idea of the first test was somewhat unknown to me.. I didn't realize that I would lose my internet connection two days into my 14-day journey and disappear completely from Earth for the following ten days. Then it happened, and I was shocked. Any trip, no matter how far or difficult, is supposed to result in a disconnect from the internet. Not only do I have an unfinished project to tackle during the next week, however, I haven't prepared myself for the downtime.

Nowadays, people don't care if they're forced to go offline. Internet is everywhere. If your internet connection gets intermittently slow and you are unable to connect, try to find an McDonalds nearby and connect to their free WiFi. Better yet, you can take your laptop to Starbucks so that you can relax at a table and surf the Internet whenever you want to. There's no cafe or restaurant café that is able to provide electricity up north. It's far from any energy source. There's no internet accessible. There are only two options you can choose to connect via satellite or switch off.

I'm unable to afford a Sat phone. It's way too expensive, especially for Internet access. youtube videos download However, I'll make a complete audio and video collection prior to venturing into the dark without Internet. The last time I was online I had two tracks. They were both downloaded back in the day. I could not resist 3 melodic jazz tracks, and one well-known song. All I can say is. Four songs over two weeks of total silence. If I had known this was going to happen I would have planned. I would have loaded my laptop with TV shows, movies music videos, audio files with songs and podcasts. I would listen to my favourite podcasts for hours. It's easy to download podcasts, then convert them into MP3 format and save them to my computer. After that, I can sit in my bedroom and listen to whatever I would like to hear at home, but don't have the time for. This would have been my "golden hour", or 2 weeks of gold. Instead it was two weeks spent looking up at the ceiling, running to meet passengers each time there is a sound in the corridors.

It was empty literally and literally. I've never been this bored. I was sure that the issue was going to be caused by the thick ice, and so the boat had turn around and be returned to the shores of civilization. This was not a surprise, but it meant that hours and hours of idle time could have been utilized to listen to podcasts , or look at DIY videos on home repairs, as being able to listen to music. The next time I'll convert Youtube videos into MP4 and mp3 on my laptop, bring them with me and enjoy my favorite tunes from my laptop. Music is never going to make you feel sad. Be aware that Netflix and Hulu apps let you download movies and shows to your computer to view offline. These can also be carried on long trips to the Arctic. It is not a good idea to spend your time bored. Enjoy yourself!
