Perhaps you know exactly what sort of gran you are.
Or maybe you’re still working it out.
Maybe things are exactly the way you want them to be with your loved ones around the corner and plenty of time to see them.
Or perhaps you’re worried about ill-health or your son getting a job in Australia or the baby’s persistent cough.
Nobody ever said being a gran and having so much love for a whole new person was easy.
You thought you’d got your worrying out of the way with your own children and it turns out you’ve now got a whole new set of things to fret about.
But you’ve also got a whole new role to embrace.
And while being a parent is full-on the joy of being a granny is that you can give all the love you’ve got and still hand them back.
You’re also more likely to be patient, you’ll have more time to devote to their needs and conversation and you won’t be worrying about setting the rules because the parents have already done that.
Being a grandma isn’t always wonderful but as family relationships go it really is one of the very best roles you can have so make the most of it.
Because one day you might be a great-granny and you need to start getting the practice in now.
1 It’s late at night and your daughter rings in a panic because the baby won’t stop crying. You say...
a) “Perhaps your should try ignoring her for a bit.”
b) “I’m getting dressed. I’ll be round in 10 minutes.”
c) “Try another bottle and then play Mozart, it worked with you.”
d) “Just pop her in the car and drive her about. I’m here if you want to drop in.”
2 You don’t like what your grandchild is wearing. You...
a) Ignore it, it’s no skin off your nose.
b) Change him into something nicer then back again by home time.
c) Ask if you can buy him a jumper in case he gets cold.
d) Add a strawberry-shaped knitted hat to his ensemble.
3 The baby’s had a cold for a week. You suggest...
a) Nothing. It’ll get better of its own accord.
b) Swaddling, infant paracetamol, nasal drops.
c) A quick visit to the doctor just in case.
d) That you can look after him to give his mum a break.
4 It’s your granddaughter’s birthday. You buy her...
b) Several carefully chosen items that you think she would love.
c) A new cot because her old one was second-hand and it worries you.
5 You’re babysitting for the afternoon. Your chosen activity is...
a) To spend time with the grandchild. No more than that.
c) Playing in the living room followed by singing and toys.
d) Visiting a friend of yours, a bit of shopping, maybe a café.
You’re the kind of gran who does best when you’re not required to put in a lot of time.
You love your grandchild dearly but you don’t feel compelled to spend every minute with him or her.
You’ll do best as a gran with scheduled visits, plenty of warning and a capacity to offer advice when asked, even if you’re not quite sure of the answers.
A little willingness to discuss the minutiae of child care would go a long way.
You are the gran who keeps on giving.
You’re poised like a ninja ready to swoop in bearing wet wipes, sterilises and scratch mittens at a moment’s notice.
And while the exhausted new parents may be endlessly grateful there is a danger you’ll burn out before your grandchild hits the three-month mark.
Try to take a step back and trust that the parents will work it out occasionally.
You’ll need some energy for the toddler years.
You are the perfect gran, determined to do everything right from the correct feeding regime to the perfect temperature to careful educational play.
That means your precious grandchild is never in danger in your loving care but it also means you’ll lie awake worrying about sniffles, rashes, squeaks, itches and sneezes.
Your commitment is admirable but try to remember that most children survive babyhood and if she eats a raisin off the floor or tumbles off a rug she probably won’t be scarred for life.
You see no reason why the baby can’t fit into your life.
You’ve probably had tons of experience of juggling babies, work, socialising and cooking. You’re not afraid to get stuck in but you remain unfazed by glitches and hitches.
Crying is never the end of the world and an alarming swelling, to you, is nearly always teething and not meningitis.
However remember that while this may be second nature to you the new parents may find every tiny hiccup alarming so don’t immediately dismiss their concerns.
