Item upgrading allows players to increase the gear score of an item up to 700, and then add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory and heading to the kiln.
Certain items can be upp'd to benefit from their unique stats (like perfect broken point armour that is rolled for melee PvP) and others, like weapons, don't change much post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Weapons can be upgraded to boost their numeric stats such as crit chance, attack damage, PvE and PvP damage. Weapons also come with an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. In addition, many weapons have a set bonus that activates when three or more of the same weapon is present on a unit. In certain instances, this bonus could amount to more than the amount of damage a weapon can sustain on its own.
The cost of upgrading a weapon depends on its rarity and level. For example, an +2 weapon requires two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade the weapon will continue to increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.
Upgrades to weapons also change the stats of their base. While this is generally a good thing however, it could have negative effects as well. Upgrades can make items unusable, unless you are exceptionally lucky.
The ability to upgrade armor items to improve their performance. For instance, if you have a helm or chest, this will increase its defense base while gloves and belts enhance their required strength and dexterity. Armor has a rerolling feature for its Enhanced Defense%. This means that it may roll down to a lower value.
The upgrade template for a weapon displays the new stats it will gain when upgraded and their respective values. This means that an upgrade from a sword that has 8 damage to an 11-attack-damage sword would result in a weapon receiving an attack damage of 3. The 3% does not mean that the weapon will strike three times less, since it is an absolute number.

Armor

The amount of material needed to upgrade each piece of armor will vary. You'll need anywhere from three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees to upgrade your first armor piece, and between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade the next one. The Champion Leathers, for instance, can be upgraded to an increase of 5 defense rating, which will allow you to keep up in frigid environments with a large number of enemies. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other side, can be upgraded as high as +20 defense to ensure you can survive a raid with your friends.
Be aware that armor can't be upgraded in the same way as weapons, so you'll need to focus on upgrading it for physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power when you're a Mage. It's also worth saving your armor upgrades to use for armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you'll wear for the final boss battle, the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

Trinkets can be upgraded when they're no longer needed, allowing a player to increase their power and value over time. They can be traded between players and are a viable alternative to gold.
In general, players should upgrade their top-priority items first. This usually refers to the most valuable-in-slot items for their class, followed by their secondaries and then other pieces of gear that they will not be replacing soon (for instance an earring or cloak). When deciding which items to upgrade players should also take into account the preferred statistics of their class. If Haste and Crit are two of the most important stats to a tank player then they should consider upgrading their chest, helm, and shoulders.
Trinkets are able to be upgraded to a higher ilvl once they're no longer needed and the new trinket will have an additional 1% upgrade bonus.
