I assumed you were told abt the oracle of Delphi right? Now I want to hear slim's remarks abt the olive tress, especially in Crete where it is famously exported all around teh world. Yiassou Ian, Did you know the Delphic priestess sat on a tripod over some earthly fumes which were emitted from the ground and which put them in a trance? In this state they would pronounce the words of the gods to the humble people of Hellas in response to their questions. The priestess would always respond in the form of a verse which could be interpreted in many ways. Therefore the gods were never wrong. Reminds me of my husband who claims he is never wrong! Oh those Greek gods! Previous Entry - Next Entry. Kalimera from Greece, Up with the intention of leaving early. A big day for us: a few kilometres to travel as well as many things to see. Central to our intent, were the ruins at Delphi some 90 minutes away then followed by a long 4 hours to Olympia, the site where the Olympics originated. More on the latter in the next chapter. A super mind blowing experience. We headed toward Delphi, passing through some rural territory where cotton, vegetable and olives were the major crops. I have never seen so many olive trees. On one occasion, a whole valley was filled with the trees. There must have been billions of them: well, perhaps that's a slight exaggeration, more like, millions. Our trip steadily took us up into the alpine areas of the Central Greece region with this journey offering us some stunning mountain views. Many of these starkly peering down on us in a most foreboding manner. Quite high alpine environments were just outside our car windows. Along the way we saw evidence of the depressed Greek economy. Many houses only partially completed and heaps of closed businesses. Even a major hotel in touristy Arachova. We reached the small alpine town called Arachova. In our initial planning, this was going to be our stop over point instead of Thiva. This would have been a much more idyllic setting but we thought that it was just a bit too far given our Athens arrival time. Our flight choices out of Dubrovnik were limited to one we caught!! Arachova is a quaint small town. It is found in the Parnassians region the Parnaby Greek cousins. I wasn't too upset with the spelling, but I have given them notice to get it correct before I next arrive in town. The Parnassis hotel and real estate should be able to change the name out the front of the premises without too much effort. We hopped out and walked around and donated to the local retail fraternity. The girls buying some table cloths while Slim and I both bought a T-shirt which we thought would typify this leg of our 6 week trek around Europe, Asia Minor and Hong Hong. More about The Boys' purchases in the next chapter I'm sure. As noted above, this is in quite high altitude and one where alpine activities such as skiing etc is conducted. Something he modestly omitted. Not far from Arachova is the Delphi ruins site. I am still somewhat reeling from what I saw. I was in the company of 'things' older than me!!! Somewhat of a rarity don't you think? Delphi is also the second most visited area of Greece. But the most spoken aspect of those who have been to Delphi, is that of the oracle. The oracle of Delphi was a spiritual experience where the spirit of Apollo was asked to advise on critical matters. The conduit was the 'Pythia' or priestess who channelled the request to the Apollo God. This is much the same way now that different religions channel aspects to a higher deity. I guess when asked for an impression, if the response given did not work out, it meant that Apollo was not a happy-chappy. I guess the Pythia, had a perfect record as she was just passing on Apollo's wishes. Any discontent from the local population would have been rare, as this would have been seen as being unruly to say the least. The Delphi site has 3 main areas. The initial site is what is called the Sanctuary of Athena Pronana. The second site being just down the road, is the gymnasium and running track, while the major site, again just down the road, houses the Apollo Precinct. All of these perched high into the mountains and on the side of quite steep slopes. Do I recall that the ancient Greeks built these places of worship and cities high in the mountains because they wanted to be closer to the gods? The Athena site is very compact: some 70 metres long and about 35 metres wide. A series of 5 main structures centred around the temple to Athena. It is said to be a site of tranquility and teaching. It was built by the colonists from Marsalis modern day Marseilles. An important French site and so all the information boards have Greek, English and French explanations in very easy yet detailed information. There are many altars here which were functioned worshipping sites for Zeus, Athena, Ergane etc. The site is positioned subserviently below the Apollo Precinct site. This site was established about BC. That's about years ago!! Just some few hundred metres down the road was the 'gymnasium site'. An athletic area where fitness and competitions were conducted. Competition between the locals as well as those who visited the region. Every four years from about BC athletes would gather and compete at the Pythian Games. A precursor to the modern Olympics. Again a most spectacular site on the side of quite a steep mountain slope: levelled out to enable the activities to be conducted. When you look at this from a distance, it is quite an engineering feat. Again very spectacular and from the BC era. Absolutely magnificent and something to see. Almost across the road but positioned higher on the hill slope, was the Apollo Precinct. This is where the city was built with many remnants of the buildings still standing. Some have been restored. A most interesting site which is more fully appreciated the higher you went up the mountain side. Good for the heart rate: marvellous cardio-vascular activity. Most impressive were the size of Apollo's Temple, the amphitheatre, the Treasury of the Athenians and the road through the city, the Sacred Way. Briefly, the Athenians here practiced and insisted on developing a fair and tolerant society. Many inscriptions at these ruins, indicated that respecting, caring and providing for others were the attributes that needed to be put into place by the inhabitants. There was a 'presence' here that I could sense. Wind seemed to follow me: eery yet inspiring. Was I hearing things? I had to pause on a number of occasions and 'take stock'. I kept these 'moments of madness' to myself. Following our site visits, we drove just a few minutes into the Delphi town, where we sat and had a good Greek lunch. Moussaka and Papoutsaki were our menu selections: all washed down with a local Rose wine. Wonderful, indeed and the views we had from our restaurant were also rather impressive. Passing through many seaside villages. A very spectacular bridge at a spectacular price. We finally arrived at Olympia and again got a little lost, but given the size of the place, that was easily rectified. An austere place but comfortable hotel. Another Greek dinner, all of us having some form of a Giros meal at a restaurant in the centre of the village. This chapter's competition is a multi-part one. Just a comment is needed. Heading further south on the Peninsula toward a small coastal town of Githio. Many spelling variations for this place, but this is mine. I guess it all depends which school you attended. As an incredible collection of over 2, islands boasting ancient history, mythology, crystal clear waters, and stunning sights, Greece draws millions of visitors a year. Seeing Greece with kids can present some challenges, but the history and the food truly make it worth the trip! We visited Greece, with our five kids in tow, in August of this summer, when it was blazing hot… and we learned a few things! Opinions shared are my own, and I only endorse products I support. Like many Mediterranean countries in Europe, the Greeks are family-centered and love kids. Thankfully for our family of seven, youngsters are welcome everywhere and get lots of passes from the locals. Other tourists might not love your little ones running around, but locals are going to love your children! Athens is often the starting point of a Greek vacation. Athens, and Greece in general, is usually more affordable compared to other European countries , which only adds to its family-friendly atmosphere. Be sure to take some time to enjoy Athens with kids , even if you are headed out to some of the world-famous Greek islands. We just wrapped up our Greek tour with our five kids as our 48th country! Athens is layered in ruins upon ruins. Tourist season in Greece generally goes from April to October , lasting even longer on some islands. August is the warmest month, with HIGH temperatures and loads of tourists. However, once the season ends, many hotels close, and islands become practically deserted. Hire a Guide. We hired Aristotle Travel for a private, half-day tour in Athens. They specialize in tours for universities and lean into a Christian approach to tours, which we appreciated. Amalia and Dino gave us amazing insight into Athens and the religious history of this famous city. Side note: They also do food and wine tours through Gastronauts Greece if this is more your style! We love traveling through food as well. YouTube is my best friend when traveling somewhere new to us that is famous for its history. In this case, watching a few videos about Greece, kid-friendly Greek Mythology, the Acropolis, etc helps to build excitement to experience these things firsthand. The night we arrived, we spent about an hour enjoying some YouTube in our hotel room. The next day, the kids remembered several things we had learned about the night before. Plan Kid-Friendly Activities. Prepare For The Weather. We visited Athens in August, which is possibly the worst month of the entire year for visiting Athens! However, we still had a great time. We did need plenty of sunscreen and hats for everyone which we bought in the historic Plaka neighborhood , and we indulged in some gelato or ice cream daily! This often served as the bribe our kids needed to walk a bit longer or go to another site. Well worth the money spent on treats! Ditch The Strollers. Ancient ruins are NOT the place for strollers. Streets in Athens are crowded and uneven. Go for a baby or toddler carrier. Buy souvenirs in Athens. We followed the advice of some of our social media followers and got our souvenirs in Athens. The Plaza neighborhood was our favorite for both lunch and shopping! Wear Walking Shoes! Everyone should be wearing broken-in walking shoes that can be comfortably worn all day. The Acropolis, which includes several ancient buildings, including the Parthenon, the temple of Nike, and more, is a must-see for the sheer magnitude of its history. This pinnacle of the city acro means top and polis means city can be seen from all over Athens. It also attracts thousands of visitors a day. In the summer months, the heat can be unbearable. Tip: The stones here and on Mars Hill are extremely slippery. I loved my Chacos. You can book a guided walking tour in advance with GetYourGuide , or save some money and buy your tour the day of your visit on-site. The young and young-at-heart will find this model so cool to see. See the changing of the guards, do some shopping, and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city. Our kids loved seeing the unique uniforms of the Athens military, including the clog-like shoes and the almost dance-like movements they perform each hour. Take the funicular up and have lunch at Orizontes, as recommended to us by Aristotle Travel. Explore the church and take in the views. In the summer, you can see parrots, which, according to our guide, Amalia, eat trash! They have flourished here. The Athens Library and Opera Center combine here in a stunning building with an entire glass wall. A whimiscal, fairytale-themed cafe that kids will adore! Staff costumes change based on the time of year, and you can enjoy coffee, teas, hot chocolates, cupcakes, and more! Alcohol is also available. We enjoyed seeing the city by car with Aristotle Travel. You can also drive along the Athenian Riviera all the way to the lake in Vouliagmeni for a dip and a nice meal. Visit the Temple of Sounio , famous for sunset views and about 1. You can go with a group here. Our kids love shopping in new places, as do we! Home to the Olympic torch for many years, this stadium will impress your little visitors. For a small fee, you can go inside and run where the Olympians have run! Traveling through our stomachs is one of our favorite modes of travel, and Greece offers some fantastic destinations! Overall, Greek food is healthy, delicious, wholesome, and yummy. The north of Greece hosts some fantastic sites, such as the Sanctuary of Delphi and the monasteries of Meteora.
