Modestly they claim a 4 star experience. Upon arrival (at the front gate ) we received a 5 star welcome. Our check in was a similar experience- I started to sense everybody within the Aquila boundaries were only to happy to be there. We were well informed of the itinerary and were assisted to our room. Our initial booking was to enjoy and experience the vast wildlife at Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa, we were also pleased by the exceptional accommodation, quality of the buffet, the upstairs bar overlooking the reserve and the FRIENDLINESS of the Aquila team. We were on day one already regretting going home. We participated in two safaris, where we got to experience 4 of the big 5 up close - close enough for “National Geographic “ to be envious. We saw various other wildlife , “Giraffes and Hippopotamuses “ what a treat. The game rangers were so knowledgeable- Trevor was our guide, I learnt so much (for a guy that knows everything) from him. There is so much interesting information to learn about Giraffes, Rhinos, Elands, Buffaloes, Lions, Elephants, Hippos etc) “Timothy” - guest relations: Any issues or thanks, chat to this guy. Every guest from what we witnessed during our stay had the privilege of conversing with Timothy. It’s refreshing seeing someone involved, looking for compliments and positive criticism. We really enjoyed his presence. The Aquila Spa - is worth every penny !!!!!! The SPA is fit for a Queen We had a couples massage with Kelly and Mel and were beyond satisfied with our treatment. Or last day involved a quad bike ride through the reserve - this is an absolute must This really helps you to appreciate nature ( your insignificance and significance) It’s a special place to be in. The cherry on the top was that the Springboks beat Argentina - Also a thanks to Rihanna at the upstairs lounge, we were well hydrated with a smile Great service received! The vast amount of staff seem to come from the local area and it is very pleasing to see that Aquila is uplifting and training the local community. Aquila also has a hydroponics farm where they are working towards being self sustainable, which is testimony to there love for nature. Thank you to everyone at Aquila for a expetional experience PS: the strict COVID protocols were very well received, as many organisations outside of the public eyes tend to break the rules WELL done for caring for your your patrons and staff We are really looking forward to a return visit All the Best Graeme And Melissa…

Aquila is approximately 180 kms/110 miles from Cape Town. Firstly, the accommodation and facilities are good. However our fire place smoked into the room badly. There are more than adequate facilities ranging from horse riding, quad bikes, walks etc. The game rangers are amazing and go out of their way to ensure you see the game and give detailed explanations of each. Although I do understand the necessity for the lions to be fenced off in this instance, their enclosure is far from adequate. The quality of the food is extremely average for the cost of the accommodation. We were initially placed in the bottom dining area, which I later found out was specifically for day visitors even though we had booked in for the weekend which was, shall we say acceptable. The bar facility there left a lot to be desired. We did find on our second day thre that there was a much nicer dining room, with a great bar upstairs, which we moved into with a fair amount of grumpling from the restaurant staff. However the food was very average for the quality of the hotel and was very disappointing.…
Room Tip: I prefer to stay in the cottages rather thana hotel room.

Our room wasn’t properly cleaned at checkin. There was a person busy working on the plumbing upon our entrance to the room. No fire lighters for the fireplace. That should be the basics. There was a bee hive right on top the roof which ended up in one of the cleaning crew and my partner being stung. Covid was the excuse for no daily room cleaning service yet there was no social distance on the game drives and you actually have to request your fire place to be lit in person by staff very contradictory to covid being the reason. We also had to request a new pillow case as one was clearly stained with mould. The food was completely mediocre. Especially with covid why is there no TV? The sad excuse of Internet is also shocking. The outside chairs were full of spiders and hasn’t been cleaned in ages. Thanks for the insecticide we cleaned them for you. My experience was more of a commercial rundown hotel/zoo experience than a supposedly luxury private game farm. The staff friendliness made the experience better. On our game drive there was a man that never wore his mask properly. The same man also walked in front of all the food and cutlery during dinner. Please have your staff ensure utmost safety at all times. As it’s not a customers job to police. The good, rooms were nice and spacious the AC worked wonders for the cold. The bed comfortable but all and all considering price tag a very disappointing experience.…
Room Tip: Take with your own firelighter.
Aquila Private Game Reserve is nothing but an African wildlife version of Jurassic Park. There is only 1 lonely Elephant and the Lions is caged in a fenced area and don’t hunt for themselves. The poor Giraffes have to vent down to eat Karoo bushes that is just not natural. The Game viewing vehicles are overloaded with guests and don’t allow for any social distancing. The food is comparable to hospital cafeteria food at best. What a disappointment…

I wrote the following email to them shortly after our stay in April, and to this date I have not received any feedback. I have followed up twice and it seems that they really do not care what their customers think. You will be very disappointed if you spend that kind of money. We recently had a break away from your lodge and after great excitement we could'nt help but be so disappointed in the fact that it was really nothing special at all. To pay R9000 for your premium cottages on a SPECIAL was a total ripoff. With a reputation like Aquila I would expect a lot more. I under no means take the covid situation away but these things that I am going to mention doesn’t have anything to do with Covid, its about getting what you pay for and final touches to create an unforgettable stay. I would like to give you some positive criticism as I feel word by mouth travels quick and before no time you will see a great negative effect on your business. The fireplace in the restaurant is stocked with wood but not lit at all, no extra effort is created for an ambience. The weather proof roller blinds that is down all day and night long on the outside terrece of the restaurant ,breakfast, lunch and dinner ,regardless of the beautiful evenings outside . It’s small detail On your website it states that you get a bottle of house wine on your arrival/stay. We did not get that. The pool bar was not open despite the amazing weather . Doesn’t that create a holiday spirit in everyboday. After all we pay for it . This will also bring more income to your bar. We were constantly looking around for waiters to serve us. We had to timelessly get out of the pool and walk to the bar in our swimming constumes to order. No rusks in our room for morning coffee or bubble bath for the bathtub -I mean isn’t that a final touch in your room ,paying for a Premium cottage . Our geyser was empty in no time and the water wasn’t even quarter full in our bath. We had to carry our own luggage at check out. I don’t mean for anybody to carry us on their hands but again,it’s an extra effort from your staff to end our stay on a positive note, seeing that we stay in the last cottage at the end. The food was very unpleasant and tasteless Really nothing special on the game drives and the snacks and treats were so disappointing ,early morning for the sunrise, what about a nice coffee on the go ? In the same email I would like to compliment you aswell on all your staff for the friendliness and ‘sout van die aarde personalities’ , I believe if they take the ‘wold class’resort to heart and get the necessary training for going that’extra mile’ for your customers it will work in your favour in the long run to keep your doors open . Your spa was beautiful and we enjoyed the warm pool, but even for a pool full of people and everybody wanted a drink there was not even a waitress available and after asking twice for one most of the people went to the bar themselves, even then not even 1 came. There is great competition out there at this stage .We honestly did not feel like it was a treat for that amount of money. If you feel that for a special price you are taking away the small detail of your lodge you are making a big mistake. If you feel that your target market is not South Africans,I can tell you that even for a tourist this would be disappointing. This is the time to up your game and make every stay as memorable as possible for everybody to remember. Times are tough and for most people a break away to a ‘world star lodge’ and get this is rather super disappointing . I was so excited to try your sister reserves out but now I am thinking twice . I hope you take my complaint to heart and address this to upper management. …
