Operation Wayne Grey was an operation carried out by the United States Army, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division and supporting elements, on March 1 to April 14, 1969. Its main objective was to cut off lines of communication and supply to the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 24th and 66th Infantry Regiments as well as preventing them from retreating into Cambodia. 3/12 Infantry, Vietnam 1969's post LZ Swinger, A company 3/12 infantry, battled for many hours to take control to this hill west of Kontum. Swinger would be the base for the heavy artillery during Operation Wayne Grey, which would last from March 1 to mid April of 1969.
Operation Wayne Grey began on March 1, when A Company of the 3rd battalion, 12th Infantry out of Polei Mrong were combat assaulted to LZ Swinger. Their objective was to secure the LZ and establish a firebase to allow for the placement of artillery.
The operation began on 1 March 1969 with the CA of A/3/12 Infantry into LZ Swinger. The LZ was considered of primary importance for artillery when the 155mm howitzers of C/6/29 Artillery were emplaced at that location the majority of the Brigade could be supported by their fires.

Years later I found out LZ Swinger was abandoned and then reopened with a battery of 155's placed on the hills on either side of the saddle and the dinks had placed boobie traps on the helo pad. It was made out of sand bags, first two birds landed ok but the third one was blown to hell.
