AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) came out in May of 1997. Unfortunately for all us marketers today, an AIM chat room is the model on which the 2020 virtual booth experience is built.
Going into chat rooms were a real thrill, most of the time the a/s/l was established and when it was 40 year old dudes I'd leave. Creating fake accounts was an obvious solution to see if your bd was cheating or wanted to or to see if your friends were talking trash about you.

I dont know about chat rooms, but I remember AOL IM before it had its recent "face lift" that killed it for me as an RP tool. It used to be my main RP medium because I could save chat logs locally on my comp.
(Mid to Late '90s) I typically shuffled through AOL's chat rooms without rhyme or reason, but sometimes, I found a special one that not only grabbed my attention, but managed to hold it for months. The Red Dragon Inn was AOL's "roleplaying" chat room, acting as a sort of medieval "bar" in the fictitious land of RhyDin.
Loved Aol chatrooms they was apart of my life in my youth. miss the people who were my chat friends and sometimes wonder whatever became of them, what wonderful memories even the Pervs we use to all gang up on when they entered the rooms.

To this day, Garden Chat appears to be one of the most active chatrooms on AOL. But now the room is completely different. "We got invaded," Bird tells Inverse.
I just want to join an old fashioned AOL chat room where I don't have to show my face and damn about the shit with random strangers who most likely just want to cyber but will at least pretend otherwise for ten minutes or so. Does this exist in any capacity today? I don't want Snapchat or dm's. I don't want forums and threads.

I understand I've made chat rooms sound horrible, and maybe they had been, but I feel like more typically than not these chat rooms had been harmless. The amount of time I spent in chat rooms within the '90s, and the period of time I spent ready to be invited to speak rooms, was ridiculous.

Matt Savage Nope! Never used AOL. I was a sysop of a VERY large BBS and we installed a T-1 a couple years before AOL had internet. When they caught up, they were able to join the various chst rooms on a network we used. Overall, the rudeness and such was intolerable so we banned the entire domain of APL from the chat channels.
