Been a fan of Anthrax since the 80s. Spreading the Disease is probably still my favorite album of theirs. Joey's voice is what made them stand out for me, and what made them unique amongst the Big 4. A metal band that had a real (call it classic if you want) metal singer, instead of growler, screamer, or whatever else. I'll give Hetfield credit where it's due, his voice is unique, and the man can (could?) sing. Araya was Araya obviously, and was good for what it was. I love Megadeth, and Mustaine's voice was also awesome and unique. But Belladonna's voice really won out for me when it came to the Big 4. With that backstory out of the way, I was really bummed out back when they originally threw Joey Belladonna out of the band. I really wondered how Bush was going to sound with them, and then I heard Only. And I wanted to like it more than I actually did. I bought the album. Enjoyed it for what it was. But Anthrax now sounded like a heavy grunge act to me. It felt like they were trying to blend with what was cool and trendy and no longer being themselves. I never bought another Anthrax album with Bush on it. I just never liked them at all with Bush. I know there is lots of love for the guy in these reviews, and he deserves credit where it's due for his vocals, but his strainy over-grainy style was never my thing, and it turned me off to Anthrax permanently. There was quite a lot of lineup drama in Anthrax in recent years, and I always hoped they'd get it together and be able to work with Joey again. Worship Music really seems to have made the 20 or so years without Joey worth the wait. His vocal performance is even more classic metal than ever before. There are even hints of Dickenson in the performances when he hits the lower registers. The writing, performance, and everything else on this album are top notch. It's not even a nostalgic coolness, like a lot of comeback albums are. This seriously stands on it's own as one of my favorite Anthrax albums. And I'm pretty sure that overall, it tops Euphoria and Persistence on my favorite albums list. I'm genuinely excited to see what's in store for the future with Anthrax. Oh, and worth mentioning, is Rob Caggiano's guitar playing. Growing up, Danny Spitz was in my top 2 or 3 guitar players. His solos always had such quirky style and personality. So I was very skeptical about how much I'd really like Caggiano's lead playing. But I love his lead style. I will admit that in any case he seems to be a smoother and polished player, but not in a boring way. Sometimes during his leads I'll get a little taste of what I think Spitz might have done himself. I just felt this was worth mentioning, as it's the only piece of the "classic" lineup not in place, but I really don't think Anthrax suffers for it, in fact, it's an improvement.

If you're like me - hard rockin' teenager in the 70's, lover of metal in the 80's and beyond - your middle-aged sensibilities might be growing nostalgic for the fine art of "clean" vocals. Let's face it, thrash is an incredibly exhilarating genre, but there comes a time when aging rockers want to sing along while banging their heads! How many times, in recent years, have you listened to a new release and silently wished to yourself that, to go along with those killer riffs, it had a real singer with real lyrics, as opposed to screams, grunts, groans, and cookie monster growls? Well, if you're a fellow-traveler, you will love this album! Not only does Joey's voice sound fabulous - and, frankly, I wasn't always the biggest Joey fan - but the lyrics on this album are meaningful, thought-provoking, and clever. The production is first-class (and I hope Metallica has learned a lesson after the shoddy engineering of Death Magnetic, an otherwise superb CD); every song on Worship Music is a winner. Though not the fastest or heaviest album out there, the album definitely jams: every song (except the three instrumentals, which are excellent in their own right) has catchy riffs and overtones of genuine thrash. The leads are technical and wonderfully melodic. The bass-work and drumming provide an incredibly solid foundation. There's no need for me to give a song by song breakdown - many reviewers have already done an admirable job in that department. Let's just say you will find yourself air-guitaring, head-banging, and singing along to these sophisticated, well-constructed tunes. (Wait 'till you hear the chorus on "Crawl" - IMHO, one of the greatest hooks in metal history!) Perhaps it's an overly used cliche, but - in all honestly, speaking of hooks - this album has more hooks than a tackle box! Notice the high percentage of 5-star reviews at this Amazon.com website. That tells you all you need to know. Anthrax has always been a great band, easily deserving its status as one of the "Big 4" of thrash metal. With this CD, the boys have proven that it's possible to mature with age and yet stay close to the roots. Needless to say, highly recommended! Buy it, crank it up, and enjoy it to the max!

45 not 33....

Joey's return to the New York thrashers fold, and boy, what a return! Still sounding musically like a John Bush album, the anger burns through this record like a searing knife through flesh, with added zombie apocalypse survival advice. The mix on vinyl is better for Rob Caggiano's insisting on a "flat graph". Beware though, this version is 45rpm, which once the surprise has settled, and reality has dawned, is quite amusing on first listen, as the orchestral intro doesn't give it away.... Great record, preordered, very happy.

They really have come for us all this time.

This is IMMENSE, a stunning return to form. I've got to say I didn't have great expectations for this, I've plodded along with Anthrax for years and not a lot they've done matches up to the visceral teenage thrill I got listening to Spreading the Disease and Among the Living, (although The Sound of White Noise was pretty good). It's not to say that they haven't had their moments over various albums, however, but this album is just great song after great song. What's the magic formula? you may well ask. Well, fans will know the album has had a stormy gestation, with Bush departing, new vocalist Dan Nelson coming and going and then the mighty Joey Belladonna returning to the fold to re-join and re-record the vocals. I think that's part one of the revival. While he hasn't got the trademark wail of the past, you just know he sounds right - he makes it sound like Anthrax; in a way that builds on the classic albums. Which is not to deride John Bush, who lets face it toughed it out in the lean years with the rest of the band. In fact I'm surprised at how close (to my ears at least) Joey gets to the John Bush sound. Part two of the recovery must go to the writing, the songs are credited to Anthrax, not Just Charlie Benante as in the past (Stomp 442 etc). You could take 'Fight them till You Can't' and put it on Among the Living and it'd fit right in. I think the band have rediscovered what made them great in the first place - good old fashioned thrashing. Part three is Rob Caggiano (sp) for me at least, I'd be interested in how much of this he wrote or tweaked. His production is awesome, one of the best, most balanced productions I've heard for ages, all instruments razor sharp. His leads are great too. Part four must be unity, I'm aware this sound odd, considering ahem, the vocalist problems, but it just feels like everyone was onside here. Too bad it couldn't last, with Caggiano heading mysteriously out of the door. And one last word on covers; Anthrax are a great covers band, but on this album the cover is superfluous, it's not needed to prop up the album, it stands on it's own. For Anthrax covers fan like me however, an enticing covers ep is to appear soon.

Solid, driven, and nostalgic

You could paint pretty pictures with words aimed at creating textures of this album in your mind and all that blah blah blah... Well? You know what? Time's short! So? Hot damn, get it! This is good!! Solid production with great balance between drums, guitars, bass, and vocals. The sound is monster! Other albums should be this polished and powerful. Plenty of harmonies, strong riffs, vocal work... and it's like Anthrax picked up their best stuff from twenty years back and turned it up to eleven. The track "Fight'em till you can't" will help you decide. Yes, the publisher made this available for free on youtube. Enjoy!

Worship Music

After (more) recent trauma regarding the lead vocalist, we finally have the latest offering from Anthrax. All the usual high quality music, done in their typically unique style. The outstanding feature of this album is the production; I cannot recall such a high level of studio sound from them before. Obviously a lot of time and effort has gone into the making of this album - there's a more "mature" feel to this recording (not a word I ever thought I'd use when describing Anthrax!) Some great music and great lyrics from a very special bunch of guys.

Stunning return to form

First album back with Joey and its a killer. Easily their best since persistence of time and "fight em" is now one of my favourite Anthrax tracks. The sound is clear, musicianship on top form and vocals are nice in the mix. The thrash missing from much of the Bush era is definitely back and this sounds almost like that era never happened. This will have you moshing around the bedroom, living room, car etc in no time.
